Masks in cinemas

AIBU to think that this is ridiculous? I’m a regular visitor to my local cinema, or at least I was before covid, and I was looking forward to going next week as I’ve booked a week off work. Then I heard about yet another new rule being introduced stating masks must be worn. You’re expected to sit for 2-3 hours with a mask on, so I assume you can’t eat or drink whilst there as you would obviously need to touch your mask to remove it. Am I the only one who thinks this will just suck the fun out of going in the first place and make it a rather miserable experience?

Don't go then.

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/08/2020 08:57

It’s your choice whether or not the conditions are acceptable to you, you don’t have to go if you don’t want to wear a mask.

Brendabigbaps · 02/08/2020 09:00

I’ve made the assumption that it’s going into the cinema, toilet etc. Not when your sat watching the film.

mrsbyers · 02/08/2020 09:01

There are tens of thousands of families mourning the loss of loved ones - if you are so precious that wearing a mask is a massive deal then simply don’t go.

NameChange84 · 02/08/2020 09:01

I’d expect this tbh. I don’t find wearing a mask to be a problem and forget it’s there after a while. You don’t need to eat or drink at the cinema.

We are never going to get rid of this thing unless people start actually sticking to the guidelines. Surely it’s obvious that being stuck together with strangers from other households in a room for hours all breathing into the air and potentially coughing/laughing/screaming (dependent on the film) is a higher risk activity than most of the others that are currently permitted. Wearing a mask cuts down the risk substantially.

emmathedilemma · 02/08/2020 09:01

Now you mention the no eating and drinking thing it sounds like quite an attractive proposition! If you have to wear them on a short bus journey or trip to a shop the next it figures that sitting in an enclosed room for several hours with a load of random strangers would also need one. If you don't like it, don't go.

Nosuchluck · 02/08/2020 09:02

I went last night and asked about masks. You can eat and drink as normal and then wear your mask the rest of the time. I imagine someone eating a large popcorn would have their mask off more or less the whole time.

KeepingPlain · 02/08/2020 09:03

Yeah don't go then. It's obvious isn't it?

The rules are beyond stupid now though. You can go to a cinema, you can go to the pub, but we still can't hold competitions OUTSIDE in Scotland. It's fucking ridiculous.

Sossen · 02/08/2020 09:09

Of course it’s obvious if I don’t like it then I don’t have to go, but that’s not the point.

How ridiculous, people might think there's a global Panademic happening... Hmm

Ricekrispie22 · 02/08/2020 09:13

I haven’t got the knack of wearing a mask without my glasses fogging up, and I need glasses for the cinema. So that’s me out.

Sossen · 02/08/2020 09:13

Well of course your entitled to your opinions, that’s why I posted, but as someone who believes that masks actually do bugger all I’m a little frustrated. Surely I’m not the only person to post on here about being frustrated with mask. I’m wearing them in shops and doing my bit but it’s hard to understand why you don’t have to wear them in pubs (where I have no interest in going what so ever) but you do have to wear them at a cinema.

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 02/08/2020 09:13

Yabu.

It's inside. Of course you should wear a mask.

Sossen · 02/08/2020 09:14

I bet that’s a nightmare. I don’t wear glasses personally but my mum and she’s struggling to wear masks.

OP posts:
Topseyt · 02/08/2020 09:14

I totally agree with you. I'm afraid it is likely to mean that I won't go.

The whole pantomime is ridiculous.

megletthesecond · 02/08/2020 09:15

The government don't care about people who go to pubs. That's why they've let them get on with it.

Lockheart · 02/08/2020 09:16

You might "believe" that masks do bugger all, but the science would disagree.

The fact our government applies rules inconsistently does not disprove the science.

Sossen · 02/08/2020 09:16

So are pubs and restaurants. Now before you say that you can’t eat or drink with a mask on, you can eat whilst at the cinema yet you’re expected to re cover your face, I assume after every mouthful/sip.

OP posts:
iVampire · 02/08/2020 09:17

but as someone who believes that masks actually do bugger all

Display of ignorance Is really not a good look

Mintychoc1 · 02/08/2020 09:17

You get used to it. I wore one on a 4 hour flight yesterday, as did my kids.

tigger1001 · 02/08/2020 09:18

I wear a mask to go into a shop, but have rarely gone into a shop other than a supermarket. I hate wearing a mask. I get hot and my glasses steam up. So I won't be going to pay a small fortune to go to the cinema as I just can't see the fun in that right now. I will wait and watch films at home.

I can understand why it is required to wear one in the cinema but personally won't be paying for the privilege

NameChange84 · 02/08/2020 09:18

Read some science. Your opinion that “masks do bugger all” will be disproved in less than 5 minutes.

okiedokieme · 02/08/2020 09:18

You just remove it to eat or drink, just like on trains. I find scarves more comfortable for longer periods

CatandtheFiddle · 02/08/2020 09:18

So you can't go for 2-3 hours without snacking?

It's a good thing really - the nose of people eating & crackling sweet wrappers & slurping drinks is very annoying.

Masks are there to protect others. If you don't care about the safety of other people around you ... well, that is on your conscience.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 02/08/2020 09:18

I agree with you OP, so definitely will not be going to watch any films at the cinema
