To let my 8yo watch Titanic?

I know it's a 12 but she's taken a real interest in the history of the Titanic and spotted the movie on our NowTV stick and has asked to watch it. Obviously the post coital car scene and the "draw me like one of your French girls" are the biggest turn offs for allowing her - although I expect she'd giggle at Kate Winslet'a breast rather than feel uncomfortable. I have had the sex talk with her, but in a very objective "this is how babies are made" way not "it's quite nice to have a shag in a car with someone who looks like Leonardo DiCaprio" way. WIBU to let her watch it (obviously watching it with her)?

May or may not be relevant - she wouldn't be alarmed at the life drawing scene, I have some life drawing sketches displayed around the house (tasteful, no one I know it's just my kind of art they've always been here before the kids came along)

Um, I'd say no. Remember the dead baby in the water?

mbosnz · 01/08/2020 22:10

The fear, the screaming, the cold?

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 01/08/2020 22:11

Yeah the images of the bodies in the water might be a bit distressing. There's a documentary on Disney+ if you have that?

Lizzie523 · 01/08/2020 22:12

My cousin and I were 9 and 10 respectively when Titanic came out. We got it for for Christmas, loved it and drove our parents mad with watching it 20 times Smile

Depends on your DD. Neither myself or my cousin were scarred by the experience and have found memories of being snuggled up at xmas watching it.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/08/2020 22:12

I’d say it was a no. The content is too old for an 8yo. It’s one thing having life drawings in your house but a different thing having a naked adult on a screen. There are also some quite traumatic scenes for a young child.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/08/2020 22:13

The objection I have is that the movie is full of utter shit that never happened. I'd get some books or watch some documentaries on YouTube if she really wants to learn about the Titanic. She can watch the dumb movie in the future.

unicornparty · 01/08/2020 22:13

My 10 year old watched it a year or so ago.

LadyGrey66 · 01/08/2020 22:13

No, definitely not. I was ten when it was released and went to the cinema to see it. I found the sinking and aftermath really distressing.

kittenpeak · 01/08/2020 22:13

The "women and children only" bit could be hard to watch. I probably wouldn't, but not because of the sex scenes. They've got to see it sometime and they're the scenes id be happy for them to learn from! It's distressing though. Could you find a documentary for her to watch?

GlummyMcGlummerson · 01/08/2020 22:14

@Aquamarine1029 ooh which scenes do you mean? I didn't know that!

I don't remember a dead baby in the water but it's been years since I've seen it

My girls were both fascinated by The Titanic, and read an awful lot around it. There was one book that was about the lives of survivors afterwards, that was really interesting. I'd suggest reading about the realities, rather than watching the fiction.

Mummyshark2018 · 01/08/2020 22:22

I let my 8 year old watch it as she was also fascinated by Titantic.

Onceuponatimethen · 01/08/2020 22:25

I wouldn’t let my dd watch this (same age)

Funnyface1 · 01/08/2020 22:27

No, there's too much inappropriate content. Settling your kids down in bed to drown because you're a third class passenger and they won't open the gates for you. A shooting. People falling off the boat, screaming. Dead people/babies in the water. No.

AudacityOfHope · 01/08/2020 22:29

My six year old was properly obsessed with it; he never noticed anything except the ship. He ended up watching documentaries about how it was made, did brilliantly accurate drawings of it, etc. It was really interesting and educational for him.

Nomorewineever · 01/08/2020 22:29

My 11 and 9yo watched it a couple of weeks ago. Nothing distressed them. They’ve seen dozens of nude paintings and pictures in galleries so no reason to be concerned seeing a naked person pose for similar - and in context that is what she is doing as would have been the models who posed for the pictures we have seen. The steamed up car scene the 11 yo was clearly clued up but the 9yo just said ‘ugghh snogging’. In terms of the death and ending etc they were accepting it was a film, like others but knowing it wasn’t real just telling a story. The most discussion it provoked was afterwards with the 11yo about women’s rights and equality and old fashioned ideas, which was rather worthy.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/08/2020 22:30

No, it’s very distressing and you could easily find she is really upset by it. Why the rush?

JizzPigeon22 · 01/08/2020 22:32

My 5 year old has seen it 🤷🏻‍♀️

PhoebeSnow · 01/08/2020 22:33

A Night To Remember is a far better film about Titanic, it’s in black and white , made in the 50s , it’s far more accurate and it is very moving especially one scene a father saying goodbye to his small son , have tissues! James Cameron ‘s version of the story is bloody awful.

Tigger03 · 01/08/2020 22:33

I watched it when it was released on home video and I must have been about 8/9. I loved it and the parts like Jack drawing the prostitutes just went right over my head. Depends how mature she is but did me no harm and it remains one of my favourite films.

malmi · 01/08/2020 22:35

Knowing your 8 year old as well as I do, I'd say that she oh wait no

Mumshappy · 01/08/2020 22:36

I dont remember a dead baby im the water. Its a no from me. I wouldnt let dd9 (nearly ten) watch it.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 01/08/2020 22:37

If let my 8 year old watch it. They have a filter at that age. And even if they don’t it’s a good opportunity to discuss things. There is nothing thee as y fact be discussed with an 8 year old in that film

PhoebeSnow · 01/08/2020 22:38

There are loads of great books , two in particular are worth reading ; Titanic Survivor the memoirs of Violet Jessop , a stewardess on the Titanic & And The Band Played On by Christopher Ward whose grandfather drowned in the tragedy.
