To want to spend our holiday money on doing up the house?

Could do with some outside perspective as DH and I have very different opinions.

We were due to go to Majorca during May half term but then covid hit. We have been refunded 75% of our money and the remainder is due soon.

DH wants to put this to one side and save up for an even bigger holiday to Florida next year. I want to use it to do up the house. We moved here 18 months ago and it still needs a lot of work doing. We have been slowly redecorating but haven't had the money to do the main rooms yet.

First World problems I know, but aibu to want to use it to do the house up. DH says he NEEDS a holiday.

House before holiday for me.
You are in your home 350 days a year (I took a few off for a holiday), I would like the place I spend most of my down time, cooking time, relaxing time and family time to bring me joy and to really love coming home.
I don't think any holiday is worth more than that.

I agree I would love to do some jobs round the house, you’ll be there a lot this winter I think!

You can always go to Florida the year after and you know everything will be sorted Covid wise by then? Also gives you something to look forward to.

We’ve used our holiday money doing up the garden/replacing broken furniture/painting fences as it’s something we’ve been wanting to do but haven’t had the spare cash to do it.

Holiday for me, once this is over I’m having the holiday of a lifetime.
Is there any way of saving cash day to day at the mo for redecorating?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/08/2020 20:09

There’s no guarantee holiday travel will be back to normal next year so I’d compromise and spend half on the house and out half away. Then you can use towards next years holiday or have some savings given the current climate.

100% house

YANBU - house before holiday - especially as it sounds like it is needed

(And sorry, but I am not sure when I would feel comfortable to visit Florida. Certainly not in the next few years)- can be replaced by any long-haul / oversea ones

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/08/2020 20:36

If you have money next year for menorca anyway, I’d do the house then you each get what you want regardless- a bigger holiday just means further to travel. Plus tbh I really wouldn’t go near America for a lonnng time!

We have been doing up our house. New lights in the garden, new light fixtures inside, new wallpaper, new bed and new carpets are being measured next week. The house is looking great now!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 01/08/2020 20:45

We have done up the house during lockdown too, with money that would have been spent on a holiday. Repaired the render and did some work to the chimney. And put some aside for new windows when the home insulation grant scheme starts in September.

I think it’s a very personal choice! Some people live for their holidays, some would rather have a nicer house day in day out.

A compromise might be in order!

Holiday for me, every time !

I would be putting money aside, making sure you have a small amount of savings before anything else. We are living in precarious times!
