Transvaginal scan on period

nudelipstick · 01/08/2020 18:56

I've been sent an appointment for a transvaginal scan. I will most likely be on my period that day.

AIBU to ask to rearrange? The letter says they only rearrange in exceptional circumstances and they can perform the scan on your period. But my periods are heavy and I feel it would be very undignified (just my personal opinion).

Depends if you’re happy to have a long wait for another scan I suppose. I’d suck it up and get it done despite the period, they have literally seen it all and won’t be phased in the slightest.

Mrsmorton · 01/08/2020 18:59

I wouldn't cancel. I'd be uncomfortable but as PP said, they've seen it all.

ArriettyJones · 01/08/2020 18:59

Mefenamic acid? Would your GP prescribe? When is the appointment?

Veganfortheanimals · 01/08/2020 19:00

If it’s to find out if something is wrong ,?or looking for why you are bleeding more?
I’d definitely go ahead
Take packs of wet wipes ,pads ,tampons and fresh underwear
But def get it over with

Queenfreak · 01/08/2020 19:01

I've had it done twice now on my period (ivf). It was honestly fine. And I'm pretty heavy

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/08/2020 19:01

Norethsterone (sp?) To stop your period until after the scan. Speak to your gp.

Waveysnail · 01/08/2020 19:02

Take ibuprofen regularly a couple days before. I have super heavy periods and this really helps. I'd also wear tampon so.you can whip it out when they ask you to undress and a container to put it in

Treaclepie19 · 01/08/2020 19:03

I felt like this but went through with it and it was honestly fine. They gave me extra things to clean up and it wasn't an issue.

ElsieBeard · 01/08/2020 19:08

I would go.they will understand if are on a heavy dày. ..I recently had a ufe....at my pre op I discussed what would happen if I was on my period on the day of procedure and they said not to worry they had done lt before and it really wasn't an issue.

HotDogKetchup · 01/08/2020 19:09

I’ve just had three with an ectopic pregnancy, they thought I was miscarrying. Point is it must be fairly routine to scan bleeding women.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 01/08/2020 19:14

I would just get it over with, whoever is doing the scan will not be remotely phased. FWIW I had an internal scan at 6 days postpartum as I had excessive bleeding and they were checking for retained placenta, so I can promise you they do it all the time!

AnnaSW1 · 01/08/2020 19:16

I'd just do it. They are used to it

ADayAlwaysHasToEnd · 01/08/2020 19:19

I can understand how you feel. But if they rearrange you could be waiting a while and what happens if that date you are also on your period?

Elouera · 01/08/2020 19:19

What is the scan for? Your uterine lining is a different thickness during AF. I had a TV scan when I had a retained product after MC and was on my next period. It was the heaviest period of my life, and heavier than the actual MC!!! Literally dripping when i got up.

I did explain to the scan women that I was bleeding, and I grabbed extra paper towel to put underneath. They use a condom thing on the probe anyways, but just ensure extra paper underneath. I'm sure they've seen it all before, and the fact the paperwork says its ok, means you arent the only one.

Puddlelane123 · 01/08/2020 19:19

I had this a number of times during fertility treatment and despite my fears and tendency towards heavy periods it was fine - you are well draped to preserve dignity and the staff are so used to it they didnt bat an eyelid. Nor do they tend to give more than a cursory glance at the vaginal area - once the probe is inserted they have their eyes fixed to the screen.

It helped that the need for it was fertility treatment and frankly I’d have done anything at that point if it meant I’d get a baby, but genuinely I can assure you any awkwardness will be fleeting if there at all.
