To ask where all the bright yellow very salty vegetable soup has gone?

You know the one I mean, it's a lovely buttery yellow, had miniscule orange bits of carrot floating in it but was otherwise smooth, was VERY salty, and always tasted of indeterminate but delicious vegetable-y-ness.

You'd get it in the kind of big traditional cafe where they served shepherds pie in big dishes behind glass, and tea in stainless steel teapots which leaked all over the flat brown tray as you went to find your table. Is best eaten with a fluffy white roll and gold foil wrapped butter.

Where has it all gone? Is it not a thing any more? How would I make it? Can you buy it in vats from catering places or something?

Send help - pregnant and fantasising about the smell of it.

No idea but you have absolutely nailed it with that description, OP!!!

Would packets of knorr spring vegetable do the trick? Its still around in some supermarkets

Fanthorpe · 01/08/2020 14:08

I bet the one you like is a Maggi brand. I don’t know if it’s available to the public though.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 01/08/2020 14:10

Cuppa soup!

Coldhandscoldheart · 01/08/2020 14:11

Do you think it might have lentils?

I would chop an onion & two or three Big carrots, one or two celery sticks plus any other orangey veg you have (squash or that, not peppers)
Soften on a low heat in some oil,
Add stock (I wouldd probably use chicken stock Kallo organic for pref, not knorr they’re rubbish)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 01/08/2020 14:11

Golden vegetable

No, definitely no lentils. It was always smoooooth, silkily so - no graininess at all.

Marigold Swiss bullion powder has that salty vegetable flavour (as long as you don’t buy the low sodium one). I reckon a couple of tea spoons of that in a soup made with very blended onion, swede and carrot is probably close to what you’re looking for.

NoraButty · 01/08/2020 14:14

Pretty sure it was called Golden Vegetable soup, it was a packet mix. My family had a cafe and used to buy the mix from cash and carry but you could also buy individual packets in supermarkets.

Coldhandscoldheart · 01/08/2020 14:16

Oh sorry, then use a stick blender til it’s right.

AdaColeman · 01/08/2020 14:38

This sounds like a Knorr soup for caterers in years gone by. Now, in a supermarket try Knorr Country Vegetable or Cream of Vegetable, I haven't spotted Golden Vegetable anywhere.

I think you probably need a jam doughnut or a toasted tea cake after your soup! Brew Brew

pandarific · 01/08/2020 14:47

Oh god thank you all. I'm so happy. 😭

I enjoy the description on that “there’s nothing like homemade soup” while this clearly is nothing like homemade soup Grin

It does say it meets salt targets, so if you’ve not had it in years it probably doesn’t taste the same now anyway (in case you were planning to buy a 200 serving bucket of soup)

Singlebutmarried · 01/08/2020 16:04

This is similar to the one you’re on about I think.

I’m sure there’s one without the noodly bits

Ooh that picture looks identical! But do I need 6 litres of it?

...yes. Yes I do.

Singlebutmarried · 01/08/2020 16:39

It’s only 25 servings

MaryBerrysChutney · 01/08/2020 16:43

“Only 25 servings” 😂😂😂😂😂

pandarific · 01/08/2020 16:54

It's 16% dehydrated vegetables! VERY healthy. I don't know why Joe Wicks hasn't got it on Wean in 15...

I'd get the 200 portion one, will be ideal to stockpile in case of a second wave lockdown.

Coldhandscoldheart · 01/08/2020 17:03

Okay, my recipe will give you nice soup, but nothing like that!!

yourestandingonmyneck · 01/08/2020 17:21

I thought these soups in these types of cafe were home-made Shock well, you know what I mean, made from scratch in the cafe. Gutted at seeing these big soup mixes Sad
