So I have just been asked to lead a project at work (this has happened before). I think my reaction to being asked such things must be abnormal, because I always express a mixture of surprise and slight trepidation at the thought!

Essentially my thought process is "You've asked me to do it, and you are superior to me, so I have to do it, so this isn't so much a question as a statement, so.... yay, I have to do this now and not fuck it up." Apparently I should be more enthusiastic Grin

This isn't exactly an AIBU but I wanted the voting option in order to gauge whether I am unusual or not.

YANBU = you are not abnormal, being asked to lead things is scary and stressful even if you know you can do it

YABU = you are a stressy person who needs to be excited about this lovely opportunity to shine, chill TF out pls

Thanks all!

Its understandable to be nervous (i think everyone has slightly more stress in these tasks).

But try and tell yourself that you wouldn't be asked if you weren't capable, and its a massive opportunity to use as experience for future roles.

Honestly, I was always the same as you. I felt sick at the thought of being responsible for a whole project. But every time, would act like it was all normal, and that I had full confidence in myself (inside being quietly terrified.) I've now gone from a role where I occasionally lead projects to a role where I manage a company and it all now actually feels normal, I dont have to fake confidence in myself anymore! Grin x

That is good to know OnlyAMummy! I generally assume that I will be able to do the work once I get into it, it's just the seemingly general expectation that my initial reaction won't be a mix of horror and fear that surprises me Grin
