Is this dodgy?

Just seen a message ping through on the home screen of dp phone from a woman called Sarah. I don't know a Sarah. It said 'Hi X I know you're busy but this is important. Here's the link' and then a link.

I copied the link down and searched it from my phone and it's a link to a bitcoin website. Dp did tell me he was looking into bitcoin a while ago but I have no idea what it is really and he's never mentioned it again.

Does it sound spammy or is it odd that he would have some woman's name stored in his phone regarding this? Must add I have no other reason to doubt him and he's not at all secretive with his phone, but what is bloody bitcoin?!

Sounds like spam.

MissRabbitIsExhausted · 31/07/2020 12:57

Sounds like spam to me

Mindymomo · 31/07/2020 12:59

Spam. I just goggled bit coins once when I didn’t know what they were. I received several pop ups and then without giving email address, got a few emails. They always put a women’s name in the title as people can’t resist looking.

Dollycarton81 · 31/07/2020 13:02

Thanks, I thought as much but the message read very personally so I just thought hmmmm.

And yet you went to the trouble of copying down the link and searching for it on your phone?

Seriously?

BlingLoving · 31/07/2020 13:23

If he's been looking into investing in bitcoin (which is a crypto currency), it's entirely possible he'll be getting various sales type emails, calls and text messages. it's also possible he has been speaking to a firm that would handle his trading and that this woman is his account manager (or would be, if he signs up).

So no, I don't think it's dodgy at all.

Whether or not he should be investing in bitcoin is, however, a whole different story. I have many clients in the crypto space and I still find it a bit odd. And for retail investors, you really should know what you're doing otherwise you are going to get burnt.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/07/2020 13:34

I think you need to explore why you felt the need to check it out.

If you're going to say well www.InvestYourSavingsIntoBitCoin got you intrigued, you must have been reading the messgae quite closely anyway.
Is it because it was Sarah and you don't know a woman named it?
Was it a link like www.randomnohintatwhatitis.com in which case why look? It could have been work or child related, a present for you or his great aunt Mary.

If it's under a saved contact I'd assume he knows her.

Bitcoin is a figment in the imagination and a series of blips on a screen. That is all. The only reason it is a currency is because people believe that it is. Physically, it doesn't exist.

You wouldn't catch me fiddling with investing in something that only exists in the minds of the other investors (and their computers).

Dollycarton81 · 31/07/2020 14:02

He isn't investing in it. He looked into it but then decided against it.

I felt the need to look at the link because it was unusual and a name I didn't recognise.

My other half looked into bitcoin didnt invest and six months later is still getting phone calls from several different companies not one or two calls but some days up to 20 calls a day and every time he tells them hes not interested and to not call him another company phones him so he cant stop all the calls,

That is kind of what money is. Especially (like sterling) when it's not backed by gold anymore. All that keeps the pound viable is the belief of the world that the UK government will honour it's debts.

So would you honestly have looked of or had been off Steve? O think it's really invasive to read his messages just because it was fr someone YOU don't know, because he must make sure you know the ne of everyone he knows. I wouldn't be happy of DH readessgaes ony phone just because he didn't know the person and if I posted on here to say he did there would be uproar
Dollycarton81 · 31/07/2020 15:37

@SleepingStandingUp I didn't go into his phone to read it. It flashed up on the home screen as a new message and I happened to see it as his phone was in the kitchen as I was cleaning. It isn't like I was snooping into his messages. Yes copying down the link was perhaps a bit invasive but I just wanted to see what it was about before I asked him. I think lots of people would do the same to be honest Confused

Thanks for all the helpful responses anyway, it was as I expected by the sounds of it :)

That's all any money is !! I get paid each month. A number in an account goes up. My mortgage gets paid, the number goes down. Nothing physically changes anywhere.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/07/2020 15:50

It flashed up and in a fraction of a seconds glance you were able to see the name and the link at the end of the message. Of course op.

Dollycarton81 · 31/07/2020 16:35

@SleepingStandingUp It's a beautiful day, do you not have better things to do that argue with strangers on the internet?

OP posts:
Dollycarton81 · 31/07/2020 16:40

@SleepingStandingUp I'm really not sure what you're trying to prove. You've totally ignored the initial question and are now debating the facts about how i saw the message and whether I was morally wrong to copy down the link. I saw the msg and a name flash up while the phone was on the worktop, so yes I looked at it. But I didn't go snooping or hunting and whether you choose to believe that or not makes not one jot of difference to me. Create your fantasy scenario if it helps you to feel superior. You are a far better person than me. Is that what you needed to hear?

That's all any money is, though.

I get paid into my bank and the numbers in my account go up. I pay for things and the numbers go down. What's the difference?

Nah I'm awesome , I can multitask- sit in the sun, text on my phone, stare at the sleeping kids, ignore the washing up.
