To be thoroughly confused about portions and size

I always make over large portions which have contributed to weight problems. All websites say so many portion of this or that a day.

What I want to know is how much I should be putting on a plate at meal times for myself (40 yr old woman) and for kids. Iv brought some measuring cups to try and make life easier. However I cant find how much I should be serving up at each meal?

@Waveysnail how old are your kids?

Do you use recipe books/online recipes? They usually give good guides for portions, we have two adults in our house so we either half a recipe for four or make it for four and freeze the rest.

The tip is to only make enough food that you need by dividing the recipe or freezing leftovers for an extra meal.

Hairy dieters are really good books/recipes with wholesome meals.

i remember a supernanny programme where she mentioned that a portion = fist sized of the person the meal is for. seems a good rule to follow?

CONFUSING??!!!
I see a 99p cheesecake and it says, contains 6 portions???
Of what?? Air??
Oh I wish to find clarity too. Common sense is a no-no.

This is really helpful. Weights are easier to measure than cups - you can get good scales with tare functions
