Hi all, have seen conflicting things online Re sleepyhead.

Due in Oct and have the Chico next to me cot, however can baby sleep in sleepyhead in the cot?

Thanks in advance

I used my sons sleepyhead in the Chico next to me cot. He slept very well from birth and was sleeping through the night from about 10 weeks. Also used it when I moved him from his next to me to his own cot in his own room and his sleeping wasn’t affected at all by the change!

Hi OP, here's a useful guide from the lullaby trust for safe sleeping and 'sleep products'
such as sleepy head.
Lots of people do use them but they're not recommend by lullaby trust.

Hope you find it useful- there's so many things out there isn't there?!

I used one for my DD with no problems and gave it to my brother for his baby, but their midwife said it wasn’t safe?! Anyway they just use it when their baby naps downstairs during the day and they keep an eye on her, and then she sleeps in a normal cot at night. Something to do with if the baby turns and gets stuck in the side or something.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/07/2020 16:00

Babies don’t need to sleep on pillows. If they roll to the side on a sleepyhead, they could easily suffocate against the edge.

I have bought a Chicco Next to Me crib for DD2 and won’t be buying a sleepyhead. It’s just not worth the risk to me. DD1 slept on her back in a crib and cot and never had an issue with flathead or anything.

BuffaloMozzerella · 30/07/2020 16:02

I used one as my baby wouldn't sleep in her snuzpod otherwise - I was sitting up all night holding her at one point which isn't safe either.

I was also worried about safety but all I can say is she did not move a muscle once she was in it. She also had a dummy so which prevented her pushing her nose up against the side anyway.

I removed it once she showed signs of starting to roll so about 4-5 months.

They contravene safe sleeping guidance.

I just read this. A very useful read.

No .

Hubstar · 30/07/2020 16:09

I wouldn’t use one. Especially in a cot

Galaxycat · 30/07/2020 16:11

@Firsttimemummybear

There’s differing opinions but personally I couldn’t live with myself if the advice was out there and we chose to ignore it so we won’t be getting one even though they’re popular.

IloveBeefJerky · 30/07/2020 16:12

I believe that they hold a lot of heat in and aren't recommended.

Stanleyrainbow · 30/07/2020 16:13

From what I have read there is no evidence to say that the sleepyhead in itself is unsafe. However there are various lullaby trust guidelines that it contravenes for example, the base is not firm but soft and pillowy.
As far as I am aware however, the 'bumper' is designed in such a way to allow airflow and be breathable.

Pinkflipflop85 · 30/07/2020 16:13

I wouldn't use one for overnight sleep because I could never forgive myself if something were to happen.

linerforlife · 30/07/2020 16:14

The purlfo baby bed is the same thing and is certified safe for overnight sleep, AND it fits in the next to me Grin

doadeer · 30/07/2020 16:14

I used mine for naps. I had a big sofa and could easily rest him next to me instead of a moses basket. He loved it and looked so cosy and happy but I didn't use over night.

luxuryholiday · 30/07/2020 16:17

They're not a 'firm, flat surface' so I wouldn't use one.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/07/2020 16:17

Perfectly safe if supervised but not for over night unsupervised sleep. Mine loved the chicco next to me and just went in sleep bag in there. The sleepyhead we used more downstairs for naps or for somewhere to put baby when i was taking a bath, very handy.

Laaalaaaa · 30/07/2020 16:51

I had both and never used them together. Baby was perfectly happy on the mattress of the next to me alone. Used the sleepyhead on the sofa downstairs for nap time with no issues.

Interesting you mention breathability because the guidance posted above talks about that too. I took a screenshot of the relevant bit.
Sleepyhead - are they safe?
Metallicalover · 30/07/2020 17:03

definitely not, my friend was asked by her health visitor if she had a sleepyhead as recently a baby had died in her area due to asphyxiation from sleeping in a sleepyhead or its equivalent aka sleep pods.
Lullaby trust says they're only safe for supervised daytime sleeping.
There has also been quite a few deaths in America due to sleep pods/baby pods.
It's not worth the risk.
