Hand in notice or juggle both jobs

Quick question, At present I’m working part time in hospitality, I work 15-20hrs a week however I’ve been offered my dream job starting part time for 22 hrs a week leading to full time.by Christmas,

Would you hand your notice in and just do dream job Or carry on with both jobs, dh thinks jobs are very uncertain just now and fears another lockdown may be imminent meaning if I left the hospitality job I would have no wages however I feel the dream job and hospitality would be a lot of hours each week possibly working from 8-5 in one job and going to the hospitality job from 6 -midnight once or twice a week,

I had my heart set on handing my notice in but dh has made me doubt my decision,

What would you do?

I'm risk-averse so would keep both jobs. With Covid now and a possible no-deal brexit on the horizon there is a huge amount of uncertainty with the economy.

Try doing both for a while and if it doesn't work then you can hand your notice in after you've tried it.

Clymene · 29/07/2020 19:58

How many hours total would it be with both jobs?

Thehop · 29/07/2020 20:04

I wouldn’t fancy 8-5 then 6-12 too often . I could do it once a week, three or four times a week if I had no kids.......just for a few months to see how it goes

Merryoldgoat · 29/07/2020 20:09

Do you have children?

How secure is the new job? What sector? Is the pay better?

welshdee · 29/07/2020 20:28

Do both if you can ...I do 7:3 then 4 till 1 or 1.30. I have zero life and it'was hard at first. But it does get easier... Jobs aren't. very secure at the minute keep both till things look better.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 29/07/2020 20:39

Keep both for now if you can. Hospitality is risky at the moment, you might find the choice is made for you.

PearTreeBoat · 29/07/2020 20:56

Due to covid my salary has been reduced so I've had to take on another job on top of my main full time job.

I usually work 8-5 with an hour for lunch but now work through my lunch two days a week so I can leave at 4 then work 5-10 at my other job as well as doing a 6 hour shift at the weekend.

It's been fine so far, I would try and do both for now and see how you get on.

The thing that would worry me is what if the dream job didn't turn out to be all that great after all, you wouldn't want to then be trying to find another job especially if a second wave hit.

2pinkginsplease · 29/07/2020 21:46

@Clymene both jobs together could be 45hrs average a week
@Merryoldgoat I have 2 teenagers and new job is in childcare working with under t’s, private sector. I have been offered a full time position however due to covid restrictions in place the capacity for the children is much less than they actually have On the register,

@Thehop that kind of shift would be two times a week.
@PearTreeBoat it is my dream job!

I was in this situation in November. I landed my dream job but I kept my other part-time job. It was really hard combining them both and the dream job turned out to be anything but that. Lockdown came, the dream job folded but luckily I did get furloughed for a while and a tiny redundancy payment. I was very grateful that I kept my first job , lesson learned - all that glitters isn't gold.

Clymene · 29/07/2020 21:51

45 hours a week is fine tbh unless you have tons of additional stuff outside that (children with additional needs etc), especially if you're doing compressed hours.

Right now I wouldn't put my eggs in one basket and I would try and earn as much as I could (well that's what I'm doing on the basis that we are likely to be entering a terrible recession and building a bit of a back up today means not starving tomorrow)

OneEpisode · 29/07/2020 21:52

I would try and juggle. Perhaps take some annual leave days in hospitality job if that’s possible and it gets too much. You will be in the new job on probation, and it might not actually be the job for you this time.

Bargebill19 · 29/07/2020 21:53

I’m not sure. I currently have two jobs which are supposed to be a joint 38 hours, which doable. But I have often been asked to do overtime at both resulting in 60 hour weeks. I don’t have a family and frankly it’s knackering. To do two jobs and juggle the family life as well would be way to much.
The time between your two jobs isn’t down time - it’s travelling time which in its self is tiring.
Could you cope if more hours are added in with either job?

Fishfingersandwichplease · 29/07/2020 21:57

I would juggle both until you have proved yourself at the new place. Did this myself, was a big relief to finally quit the first job but would advise to get established in the new one before quitting. Eggs in baskets and all that!!

Kitkit18 · 29/07/2020 21:57

I would at least try both to see how you find it. I work 8-4.30 Mon-fri and a 5-11 shift twice a week during the week plus a full Sunday shift. I actually don't mind it although doubt I could keep it up forever but if its short term definitely give it a go.

2pinkginsplease · 29/07/2020 21:57

L@Bargebill19 that’s my worry . The extra hours, they said there are staff holiday over the next few months in the new job and I would be offered full time hours for sept and Oct. meaning I could potentially be working 60 hrs a week as well as 2 teens, a husband and a-mum who has been very unwell and a poorly mil too,

Decisions decisions! 😂

@OneEpisode no chance of annual leave in hospitality, we’ve only just opened after 4 month so furloughed!

This was me. I worked both from october to december. Left my lovely pthospitality job to go into career job. Career job turned out to be shit, even though I had given it those three months initially. Regretted leaving lovely hospitality job. Was furloughed from career job, so was lucky there, as if I had been in lovely job I was on a zero hours contract and would have got nothing. In the end I resigned and am now back to a non-career but much more fun job with more stability and loving it!

Do both for as long as you can - even three months of doing both wasnt enough to show me the true role!

2pinkginsplease · 29/07/2020 22:22

Ok I need to have a think .

I had to do a placement for my college qualification so was in this place for 5 months and they offered me a job after those 5 months, so I have that experiences , so I’m not going in blind.

Thank you all for your feedback, it’s food for thought.

I’d do both. Plenty of people manage full time hours with additional hours when necessary, along with an array of family commitments. You can remind yourself that it’s only for a short time. Keep all your options open and your eggs in two baskets. That’s what I would do.

Bargebill19 · 29/07/2020 22:29

Let me put it this way - I’m seriously thinking of handing in my notice to one of my jobs - 1) the number of hours per week have left me honestly considering ordering fresh underwear from amazon due to not having enough time to even do my laundry (wet knickers are ewwww)
2) the tax is making it not worthwhile attending one of the jobs - I literally pay in tax what I earn from just one of my jobs, if I only did one I wouldn’t pay any tax at all.

You need to talk to HMRC about your tax - they can split your tax code between the jobs.

Standard is personal allowance at ‘main’ job, Basic Rate at second. Then at year end you might be entitled to a rebate.

Bargebill19 · 30/07/2020 11:55

@Merryoldgoat.

Thank you, but I’ve already done that and it still doesn’t really pay me to be in two jobs. If I do overtime it works out I get paid £1 per hour of overtime extra after all tax and other deductions. If I dropped one job, I wouldn’t have to pay any tax at all, and have a private life back! I wouldn’t be any worse off money wise.
I now see why people refuse work.
