I have been shortlisted for an interview next week and have been asked to take along an object or picture so I can describe myself to the panel.

Has anyone else experienced this? I really want to run for the hills and not attend and I would too if I didn't need the job.

Does anyone have any ideas what they would bring to start me thinking?

They do this at university interviews. They are trying to find out about you and make it a bit more relaxed. If you do sport take something thatscrelated to that, a running shoe, football etc...

They should do their research then, and realise that 'more relaxed' is the exact opposite of how things like this make most people feel!

So work out what the people who will interview you are like and like and pick something that immediately forms a common bond with one of them (but not an old school photo if you both went to the same boarding school as that may not go down so well these days.....)
