To go to a&e with stomach pains?

Ffswhatnoww · 29/07/2020 12:16

So this started Saturday night, was snacking on some peanut when my stomach started to hurt, couple inches above belly button. It was bad but manageable and lasted about 4 hours. Sunday night same thing happened after tea. Took buscopan which didn’t help but pain subsided after few hours. Thought I had a weird bug although I haven’t had any vomiting or diarrhoea.

Then last night i was in absolute agony, only thing that helped was lying in a ball. Took some buscopan and paracetamol which didn’t help at all. The pain is like waves over my mid abdo, spreading around into both sides, gradually building up then easing slightly. This lasted around 4 hours then started again while lying in bed on my back.
Have tried to make an appointment with GP but they haven’t got anything until Friday and I know if this pain strikes again before then I won’t be able to cope as it’s terrible.

Thanks for your advice, don’t feel like it’s constipation, everything seems fine and normal. Don’t think it’s trapped wind or indigestion as it feels different but will try something for them just in case.

It’s definitely ‘painful, painful, doubled over in pain type of painful.

Also no, definitely not pregnant.

I have gallstones and waiting for treatment. If I am having an attack I drink peppermint tea (it doesn't make it go but it eases is a little). I also have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar 🤮.

This is what I do but you need to get diagnosed so go to a and e when in pain. The doctor gave me strong painkillers for when I have an attack too.

LadyMuck111 · 29/07/2020 13:21

I read the first few lines of your post and thought appendicitis. Hope you get sorted out.

safariboot · 29/07/2020 13:24

Severe pain with no obvious cause is an easy A&E visit for me. There's enough stuff it could be that's fatal if untreated.

Ffswhatnoww · 29/07/2020 13:25

Really? I thought appendicitis pain wouldn’t ease off? Just get worse?

I think you can have a grumbling appendix

Another shout for gallstones! Most common if you meet the four FS: fat, fair (haired), female, (over) forty.

I had them when I was 22 though and suffered a long time before someone realised it was not, in fact norovirus (no shit Sherlock!). I would get extreme cramping pain in my back/ shoulders and in my abdomen. I vomitted non-stop until there was only bile left and couldn't keep anything down. I also had this insane urge to move, I couldn't lie still. Absolutely knackering!

Just make sure you mention gall stones if you don't fully fit the picture, it was unreal how many times I heard "but you're so young!".

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 29/07/2020 13:32

Sorry for the me-rail! Yes, I would go to A&E, I'd say extreme abdominal pain is an emergency, or at least potentially so, so worth getting checked out!

Ffswhatnoww · 29/07/2020 13:39

I’m not fair, fat (actually underweight), I am female but I’m only 29 🤔

It's me to a T though, and together with the descriptions of the symptoms is why I'm convinced it's the cause of my symptoms.

Spidey66 · 29/07/2020 13:53

I understand it can happen to people with a rapid weight loss though such as Lighter Life or Cambridge Diet.

Bearlyawake · 29/07/2020 14:10

I've been experiencing this kind of pain (lasts for approx 4 hours, agonising). It's a degenerating fibroid and I'm waiting to have the bugger removed. It is absolutely agony when it kicks off.

Maybe it's not gallstones thenSmile Won't hurt to mention it though. Have you decided what you are going to do yet?
Katrinawaves · 29/07/2020 14:20

I’ve had gallstones and it does sound like these. But my sister had similar pains a few years ago and I told her it sounded like gallstones. It wasn’t - was something much more serious. I’d definitely recommend going to A&E if you get another attack to be assessed if you haven’t been seen by your GP and referred first.

ProperVexed · 29/07/2020 14:21

I had gallstones when I was 29....and whilst I'm fair, I wasn't fat!
The pain you are describing sounds about right....I ended up with pancreatitis caused by the gallstones. I was very thin by the time they took my gallbladder out as eating anything caused immense pain.

doodleygirl · 29/07/2020 14:24

I have IBS and I get this type of pain with a severe attack. Do you think it is food related at all?

Ffswhatnoww · 29/07/2020 14:30

I’ll see if I get another attack of pain before my doctors appointment.. If I do I’ll ring 111.

Spidey66 · 29/07/2020 16:16

If I get another attack I'm going to A&E as advised by my GP, if only to hurry up the MRI/diagnosis. I've my bloods back which were generally OK, well my LFTs were which are normally raised in gallstones (only issue was my Serum C reactive protein level was raised which sometimes means inflammation or infection,) I'm waiting for the results of a heliobactor antigen thingy, that's been positive before which if positive again might be why the serum c is raised (I'm just guessing, not sure. I'm a mental health nurse so not all these figures mean much to me). But no sign of MRI appointment. Another attack and an A&E trip might hurry it up.

OldEvilOwl · 31/07/2020 17:03

Sounds like gallstones to me too, I've had them it's extremely painful. Try to avoid fatty foods and alcohol. What did you eat? Pastry was a trigger for me

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 31/07/2020 17:07

I second 111. And I would call them sooner rather than at night!
Good luck OP 💐

JaneJeffer · 31/07/2020 17:14

Any time I've gone to GP with abdominal pain I've been sent to A&E anyway so you might as well go straight there. They'll be able to scan and do blood tests even if it's just to rule out anything serious.

I don't understand people saying not to go. That's what it's there for and they use triage to make sure serious cases get seen to first so you won't be denying anyone else treatment!

Littleroundsponge · 31/07/2020 17:18

It could be gastritis. I suffer quite badly with it and that's exactly where I get my pain.

RubyThursday17 · 31/07/2020 17:41

Ignore all the 'advice' you are in tremendous pain. Get a taxi to ED and you will be triaged immediately by qualified clinicians and then treated for whatever the issue is. Trust me the NHS staff will be kind and sympathetic to you.
Go now

Bookriddle · 31/07/2020 17:47

I had a pancreatitis last year, the pain for me was above the belly button, but the pain didnt ease off, i was in hospital for 7 days, 4 of them on a morphine drip
