To ask if a coil fitting is as bad as I think it’s going to be?

I think I’m more nervous about this than I was giving birth Confused

Going on Friday and working myself into a tizzy about it! Having the Mirena I think, rather than copper.

Take the diazepam if you're nervous. I had an aborted attempt to get one in and the gp prescribed it for me (I bent the iud on my impenetrable cervix). When I went back after 10mg of valium, it went in fine and I don't remember it being painful. I've had two vaginal deliveries but the second birth was traumatic so it was just nerves closing things down. Neither appointment was painful, bit of cramping afterwards. You'll need a driver if you're under the influence though!

My 3rd def very uncomfortable. I didnt remember 2nd being as bad!! Hard relax

Didn't realise you could actually request Instillagel for a fitting, wish I'd known that! Mine was honestly the worst pain I've had in my life, much worse than childbirth. But fine once over with.

luca123 · 28/07/2020 22:48

I have got the lowest pain threshold ever and I was totally fine. Best contraception I have ever used. Wish I had had one fitted years ago.

Dogstar78 · 28/07/2020 23:09

I found it absolutely fine. Just like a smear. Loving having no periods. Try not to worry, you'll be fine. Probably just the fear of the unknown. My GP got gloved up and then realised he hadn't turned the light on. I had to reach round with my legs a limbo and do it for him!!!

MrsElf · 28/07/2020 23:47

I’m on 3rd or 4th (fitting/removal hasn’t been memorable Grin).
First one (at 18, no children) I didn’t even realise it was being done. I am a wuss, and was expecting it to hurt, but nope. The rest have been like a little pinch.
Never worse than my mildly uncomfortable smears. But, like smears, take a paracetamol first, and if someone else can drive you home, so much the better.

Shizzlestix · 29/07/2020 00:12

Take hefty painkillers before and after. I was surprised at how weird it felt, I mean it’s high up, it’s an unusual feeling, obviously not comfortable BUT it lasts literally seconds, so tolerable. Don’t forget to take a pad in case you bleed a little bit. Don’t panic, it’s worth it!

TeddyIsaHe · 29/07/2020 08:02

I think I can manage 5 mins of pain for no/less periods.

It’s definitely the fear of the unknown. It all just sounds terribly archaic (cervical clamps, crikey!!). Painkillers and diazepam and it’ll be fine.

Thanks for all your tips and stories! It has eased my mind somewhat Grin

Stunning your toe definately hurts more. Or biting the inside of your cheek, that's a bitch!
Having a coil fitted is about as sore as having blood taken.

Swirlyceiling · 29/07/2020 08:07

I had a mirena coil fitted 8 weeks after having a baby. Going in was totally painless minus a bit of a pinchy sensation. No more painful than a smear.

I had very bad cramping for a week after but that could have been my endometriosis freaking out.

Had it for 1 year now. Honestly, worth it.

movingonbackwards · 29/07/2020 08:13

I'm the biggest wuss on the planet when it comes to all this. Haven't given birth and so nervous about smears but honestly getting the coil was ok. It was really sore and crampy going in but it was for a couple of seconds and the pain stopped instantly once it was in. Period type pains the rest of the day and totally grand after that. You'll be totally fine!

MariaDingbat · 29/07/2020 08:21

I'm one of the unlucky ones that has a terrible time with getting them fitted. It's harrowing, properly harrowing for the whole time the doctor is working, then I get a shock response of throwing up, sweating and diarrhea for an hour or so afterwards. However, not having heavy and horribly painful periods for 5 years is absolutely worth it. So much that I've had two mirenas fitted, the second knowing full well what was going to happen.

I haven't had children yet though, so that could be why it was tough, my friend had hers fitted after twins and her experience was much easier and echoed lots of the previous posters.

TeddyIsaHe · 31/07/2020 08:18

Appointment is at 11, so I’ll update once it’s done. Terrified!

All done! Tbh it was pretty bloody horrendously painful during the insertion and for about 30 mins after, but it was over so quickly I can’t complain!

Dull period pains now, which is more than manageable. And no worrying about contraception for 5 years!

Nope. In my experience not bad at all! Have had 2 now! She even had difficulty getting Mine in (2 c-section babies and never given birth naturally) but even with that I barely felt a thing. Was told I’d bleed after but I didn’t so yeah don’t worry. It’ll be fine 🌸🌸

Roselilly36 · 31/07/2020 12:48

Pleased you have had it done, I am on my third Mirena, but I am a total mess, having it inserted, I have even fainted once, cried, I find it so so painful. But worth it. I have had two DS’s without pain relief, I would rather give birth than have another one inserted! Thankfully this one will take me through the menopause.

Mary46 · 31/07/2020 15:47

Hope you ok Teddy. Im on 3rd but I agree its quite sore. Men have it handy!
