To ask what your eight year olds are into?

My dd is an 8yo only child and quite shy but I’ve noticed some of her classmates seem to be into quite different things to her. Many of them are on TikTok and another mum showed me videos of one or two of them gyrating to music and posing. I’ve also seen pictures of her friends’ bedrooms on Facebook, a lot of them have had room makeovers during lockdown and there’s not a toy in sight, the rooms look so grown up! My dd still plays with dolls and figures making up stories, she loves cuddly toys, making dens and making little houses for her toys. I love her imagination and the way she is and wouldn’t want her on social media. I do wonder at the back of my mind though how she gets on with her classmates, whether she sometimes feels a bit out of it. I noticed once at a social occasion some of the girls were practising dance routines while she was just wanting to make animals. I’m glad she’s her own person but just wondered what eight year olds are generally into?

My 8yo DD is not allowed TikTok. I have TikTok and if I see a funny video that's age-appropriate then I save it to show to her but she's not allowed TikTok for herself.

She doesn't have a phone but will be getting one next year when she goes up to middle school as that's generally when kids get them round here and she'll be walking to/from school herself so I'd rather she had a phone.

She likes Roblox, reading, dancing, arts and crafts, riding her bike, dolls but fashion-type dolls rather than baby dolls (e.g., Our Generation) and I think she'll be fine with them soon, those TY stuffed animals with the huge eyes, nail varnish, roller skating. Basically she's still into kid stuff but older kid stuff.

I have a 9 year old and she still plays with things like LOL dolls and other little figures. She also likes Minecraft and Lego. I'm thinking I won't be buying many toys for birthday/Christmas this year apart from a couple of new Lego sets, it will be mostly books and art and craft stuff along with a new scooter, she has tons of plastic tat already and I'm guessing it will probably be outgrown soon.

edwinbear · 28/07/2020 17:20

DD8 is into Minecraft and Roblox mainly because she can play along with her friends. She still likes her soft toys but is losing interest in other toys, she also likes riding her bike.

Theforest · 28/07/2020 17:25

I have a 9year old. No social media here and no interest, although he does play xbox with real friends only.
He loves, and I mean loves, his cuddly toys and enjoys figures still.

Janaih · 28/07/2020 17:28

My 9 yo niece likes lego, crafts, david walliams and Harry Potter books and has a lot of those colourful soft toys with the big sparkly eyes. No way would her mum allow tiktok.

I have a 4 yo cousin who can pose for a selfie with a pouting face. It very much depends on the parents.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/07/2020 17:31

DS8 is into roblox, anything Mario, Superzings, reading, craft and general messing about. He is quite young in comparison to a lot of his friends tbh. He still has a space themed bedroom with no tech where some if his peers have TVs and Consoles. We aren't anti tech at all but still feel he's too young for unsupervised access or his own phone.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/07/2020 17:32

oh he still lives his teddies too, we are nowhere near giving them up yet!

OhioOhioOhio · 28/07/2020 17:33

No way would I let my 8 year old on tiktok. Its awful.

Ace1185 · 28/07/2020 17:34

I have a just 9 year old. He likes minecraft, lego, roblox, drawing and is big into playing outside. Oh and soft toys. He is a sucker for a cute soft toy

cravingthelook · 28/07/2020 17:35

My DD is almost 9.

She's into ballet and music (goes to classes and has a keyboard)

Plays with baby dolls and dress up dolls and loves her soft animals she's got an amazing imagination and plays happily making up stories and songs constantly

She likes watching craft things on you tube, but I try to limit the time - she has an iPad but no phone

She likes all kinds of cartoons too from Spongebob to my little ponies

Long may this fantastic little girl imaginative play continue

Magicbabywaves · 28/07/2020 17:39

I think your daughter sounds preferable. Plenty of time for social media later on

Grgyuhgdetujjbdww · 28/07/2020 17:45

It’s so sad. Children grow up so fast these days.
I still secretly played with dolls at 12/13
Your daughter is absolutely fine, I’d consider the other children to be the ones to worry about, personally.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 28/07/2020 17:46

I do think only children (I have an 8 year old boy) are generally better at imaginative play and don’t rely on having to interact as much so might play with traditional toys more.

My 8 year old loves playing male belief with his toys Lego, playmobil, roblox, watching project zorgo on you tube, playing on his trampoline, playing with the dog, riding his bike. He does like meeting his friends in the park, playing cops and robbers/army type games and hide and seek.

Inatightsqueeze · 28/07/2020 17:46

My DD enjoys TikTok, but only watching with either with me or dh and never posts.
She enjoys playing with sylvanian families her dolls and LOTS of junk modelling which does my tree in but she enjoys it.

ftm202020 · 28/07/2020 17:48

My 8 yo sounds like yours. She likes cats and cute things and playing make believe still. Her friends seem to be similar.

Longdistance · 28/07/2020 17:49

My 9yo dd likes Roblox and plays with dd 11 and some of her friends. She likes art, so likes painting. Hama beads she loves doing designs, necklaces and bracelet sets. She likes hair things, doing things to her hair and before lockdown was doing styles for her friends. She loves going for a bike ride around the park.
She’ll watch kids shows on Netflix.

My eldest prefers imaginative play. She has Schleich horses and other animals.

AnnaMariaDreams · 28/07/2020 17:50

DS8
Lego. All the time. Free building it, talking about it, watching things about it, reading about it, asking for expensive new setsWink
Also Minecraft.
Reading - loves Harry Potter, Star Wars, Middle Earth (I read him the Hobbit), kids boos like Wimpy kid, treehouse, David Walliams.
TV he likes Richie Rich and the Simpsons at the moment.
I don’t think the girls in his class are into the same stuff generally although one girl who he is great friends with likes Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lego.

SillyLoveSong · 28/07/2020 17:52

I have a 7 year old. She thinks TikTok is silly and annoying.

She likes Frozen, TY toys, Doll house/Sylvanians, My Little Pony and LOL dolls. She also loves dressing up people and decorating houses on The Sims 4.

Whathappenedtothelego · 28/07/2020 17:52

I have a 9 year old. Still lots of enthusiasm for Playmobil, Sylvanian families, model animals, soft toys, marble run, dolls...

She also likes board games, card games, chess, drawing, colouring, painting, reading, sewing, making endless pictures with foam shapes and glitter, loom bands...
She'll spend ages in pretend play.
She doesn't have a phone or tablet, but will borrow mine or her elder sibling's - she particularly likes Minecraft and making stop motion animations at the moment. She'll watch cartoons on YouTube, but doesn't have any access social media.

Chickychoccyegg · 28/07/2020 17:56

my 8 year old dd would like a tik tok account but she's not allowed, a fee of ger friends do.
she enjoys playing with barbie, roblox, doing gymnastics, arts and crafts, her bedroom is very much like a kid of her age, lots of pink stuff, soft toys all over the bed, boxes of toys, so sad when kids grow up too quickly

lrwe · 28/07/2020 17:59

My (nearly) 8 year old DS love his marble run, Harry Potter, reading, he's just got into roblox, mine craft and his switch, playing board games and monopoly deal in particular, Lego, he plays Playmobil with his younger brother and will also play duplo with his baby brother.

He loves to swim and ride his bike as well.

He plays lots of imaginative games with his best (girl) friend which I love. But with his friends who have video consoles he'd rather play. I do try to limit screen time though

Coffeeandcrumpet · 28/07/2020 18:03

Mine is into craft, she makes lots of things and uses a sewing machine well. She also likes singing and drama. She still plays with toys, mainly lego and our generations dolls. She has also just got into minecraft with her big brother. She does like tictoc but only watches it with me on my phone. The only account on any kind of social media she has is Pinterest and that is just full of craft stuff and baking recipes.

MutteringDarkly · 28/07/2020 18:03

No social media here, and her subset of friends don't either. They're into Malory Towers, Pokemon, drawing, comic books, stuff like horrible histories and operation ouch, going on treasure hunts, etc. Does not especially like cooking or craft, but never has so not an age thing.

Home42 · 28/07/2020 18:07

DD is 9. She loves her Barbies, Lego, soft toys but also minecraft, Roblox and audiobooks.

She tends to look very grown up if we are going out but happily spent an hour earlier making slime and playing “slime monster hide and seek” with some Barbies.

She likes makeup and hair and trampolines. She keeps her bedroom tidy and chooses her own clothes but loves to wear her goggles and in the bath with a pile of glow sticks.

I guess she’s on the cusp. She tends to choose friends who appear “younger” in her class at school. I don’t think there’s a rush for her to mature!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/07/2020 18:07

My 8 year old DD likes Pokemon and playing The Sims. No TikTok and no dance routines, I doubt she knows what TikTok is. She's very imaginative and loves writing - I got up this morning to discover she'd written me the most beautiful poem.

She's also recently gotten into making PowerPoint presentations for fun! Grin
