AIBU to turn this job down?

I worked in a school as a TA for 12 years before deciding, aged 40 to train to teach.
I left the school on very amiable terms to go to train elsewhere as they are not a teaching school.
Due to Covid there are very few teaching jobs around so I applied to go back to that school as a TA.
I had an interview but didn’t get the job (the same job I did for 12 years) because they didn’t feel my experience matched the role.
I don’t think that was the real reason, I think I didn’t convince them enough that I was genuinely interested in the job.
I know they filled all the positions because friends who work there have told me so.
But now they have more jobs open and I have been contacted asking if I want to apply again. My interview was less than a month ago.
I don’t have anything permanent lined up for September so the idea of a regular income is tempting but I am reluctant to apply as I think that if they wanted me to do the job, they would have given me it.

But OH says that he thinks someone has turned up who isn’t suitable. So effectively I’m their back up plan but I should reapply.

When I didn’t get it I took the positives, and now plan to work part time and do more study while looking for a permanent job.

My gut instinct is sod it, everything happens for a reason but my head is saying any money is better than potentially no money.

An income trumps no income in my eyes. I'd go along. You don't have to accept if they offer you the job.
