What have you learnt from this pandemic?

For me I am a naturally cautious person and tend to think of worst case scenarios on a daily basis. I am a catastrophiser.

Therefore I'm very reluctant to book things far in advance. I wouldn't book a holiday years in advance. Maybe months but more likely weeks.

This pandemic has reinforced that. I can't see myself booking a holiday for 2022/2023. I want to go away in January but probably won't book anything until December.
Seeing the hassle people have had to go through to get money back/travel insurance etc puts me off booking anything earlier.

What about you?

@gamerchick you may rest easy! I have a cold right now. Pretty sure I've given it to the whole household. Had a covid swab as I'm in the shielding group, was negative. Told it was probably a cold and to isolate just incase!

People are much better than I thought - some people have really shined,
People are much worse than I thought - ugly behaviour from people who should know better

dozzyf · 27/07/2020 23:58

That a large number of people are selfish, incapable of critical thinking and unable to see anything from a perspective other than their own.

The majority of people are stupid and believe anything they are told..

Proudboomer · 28/07/2020 04:50

That my neighbor is a virtual signalling twat.

TheLegendOfZelda · 28/07/2020 05:12

Most people are incredibly stupid

PhilCornwall1 · 28/07/2020 05:37

Not really learnt, but reinforced a couple of things that I always thought:

  1. People actually believed and still believe (it's been said multiple times on a thread on here in the last 24 hours), that all these measures were put in place by Johnson and Co. "to save our lives". I am amazed people have bought in to this rubbish. From day one I've said that they care not one bit about the general public (why would they) and couldn't give a toss who actually dies. Take a look at any of the Cabinet muppets that stood there on TV, Johnson, Hancock, Sunak, Gove, Sharma, etc. Would you trust them? Say that on here and the blinkered do gooders are like flies around shit.
  1. Trust nobody. All this "REPORT!!! REPORT We are in this together and must all follow the rules to protect each other" social responsibility virtue signalling is complete bollocks, I believe none of it. For me, it's care for my family as best I can and make sacrifices for them, everyone else is on their own. They aren't my concern and will probably stab you in the back at the first opportunity if required.

That the freedom I thought I had to live my life is a complete illusion. It can be removed at any minute by either malign intent or incompetent leadership.

lifeafter50 · 28/07/2020 06:39

That the world has gone fucking mad
This

GnomeDePlume · 28/07/2020 07:12

That so far we (family) have got off lightly and we are counting our blessings.

That the recovery from covid can be long and nasty (4 months on and I’m still not fully well)
That we are happy being a lot less sociable than I thought.
That we need to live in a bigger house with more outside space.

lifeafter50 · 28/07/2020 07:24

This thread is the good Mumsnet! Thanks OP, it really is uplifting to see how thoughtful (and articulate)people are on here -just love the reassuring response about the common cold 😀

Indecisivelurcher · 28/07/2020 07:31

That staying at home with the kids is fine actually, and I don't need to rush rush rush to get us all out.

That the day needs breaking into sections.

That I do not like playing make believe.

OLGADEEPOLGA · 28/07/2020 07:43

I've learnt who really matters to me and that it is time to let go of the people who have shown themselves not to be the friends I thought they were. Also learnt that I really love my family bubble, I no longer have a fear of missing out. I now love gardening, baking, crafts, reading and appreciate the simple things.

I am however angry at our shower of a government and hate the way so many of us are happy to be lied to day after day. After the defending of the trip to Durham I now struggle with anyone who still believes in the Tories.

PrtScn · 28/07/2020 07:49

That people are selfish inconsiderate twats.

SockYarn · 28/07/2020 07:51

That people are more ready than I thought to step in and become a secret police force, snitching on their neighbours, and making up their own brand of the RULES which are far stricter than the real rules

And that people really can't quantify risk.

KeepingPlain · 28/07/2020 07:58

That it's true that one person can be smart, a group of people are dumb as hell.

BroomHandledMouser · 28/07/2020 08:04

That people that I thought were friends can cared really just don’t.

But I’ve also learnt that I’m ok with that, I’m stronger than I thought Smile

BroomHandledMouser · 28/07/2020 08:04

Can - that Hmm

mondaynoon · 28/07/2020 08:07

That many of our politicians are not fit for office.

paap1975 · 28/07/2020 08:13

That people are far more stupid than I thought. That people are far more selfish than I thought. That so many people believe in conspiracy theories, no matter how easy it is to check facts.

To be honest, it's left me feeling really down about our society. There have been so many examples: clapping for medical staff combined with ignoring social distancing, going nuts about there not being any masks and now refusing to wear them.

Just watching BBC breakfast and am quite happy that some people are writing in and pointing out that travel during a pandemic is stupid. Do people really need to have this spelled out to them?

But, to end on a positive note, I have also discovered in detail (thanks to a TV programme about where she works) how much my very good friend who works in intensive care is an ABSOLUTE BLOODY HERO, along with all her colleagues.

Kazzyhoward · 28/07/2020 08:18

That UK media (BBC/ITV) isn't fit for purpose.
