Room for expressing/storing breast milk at work?

Thinking about a room to enable expressing and storing of breast milk. What would you ask your employer to include?

A private room with a chair, plug socket and mini fridge would be the ideal. If that's not practical, a bookable room where you won't be interrupted is the bare minimum.

A decent chair/sofa
A table at an appropriate height for the chair/sofa
A sign telling people to knock - though preferably a door that is difficult to open from outside of someone is inside.

A fridge.

Blinds on the window to ensure you can't be seen from outside.
A sink, soap, paper towels
Power sockets near the sofa/chair so you can easily plug in and electric breast pump.

You don't really want it too kitchen like as some a-hole will start using it as one.

My office has one of these. It's a small lockable room with a comfy chair, coffee table, sink, paper towels, a bin, lockers (where I store my pump during the day) and a fridge with little lockable compartments.
The lockable fridge compartments might be unnecessary, but I work for a massive company and they have these in every office. The room is for nursing mothers but also for anyone who needs privacy so I guess some people might store medication in the fridge.

I just used a boardroom (not one with glass walks!) and put it in the communal fridge in what looked like a lunch bag.

Was fine.

StCharlotte · 27/07/2020 19:41

I literally cannot think of a single space in our office where any of that could happen. It's dire.

CheshireDing · 27/07/2020 19:41

Glass walls not walks fgs!

One place that I worked let someone use the prayer room.

Really great ideals, thanks. We have an office that will be converted and has a door that can lock.
We’re going to be really strict about its use so I’m thinking I’ll give a key to each of the women who will need it so other people can’t just wander in.

If it's a faff to give out and keep track of keys, ours has a little slider on the front, so you slide it to 'occupied' before you go in.

Great you are providing this in your work place OP :)

I would ensure that access to the fridge where the milk is stored is always available. I used a first aid room, but frequently could not access the fridge to put milk in or take it out if the room with the fridge in was in use - so ended up using the fridge in the kitchen.

On one memorable occasion I used the Assistant Chief Constable's office as it had comfy seating and a fridge!
If the Police can manage that 10 years ago I am sure any other organisation can... you should have a nominated person in HR who sorts this, depending on the size of the company.

When in the normal office I got a locked meeting room, then stored in marked containers/bags in the office fridge. Worked v well for 6+ months.
