We have mice, new build property and I can’t see any gaps anywhere but it may have run in the back door which of frequently open. See one dart across the kitchen and immediately bought Plastic snap traps baited with chocolate and also sachets of poison. It’s been 2 weeks and haven’t caught anything. Last night lying in bed I heard ‘movement’ couldn’t see anything but pulled out all furniture today and found droppings 😩 I’m terrified of mice! Further hunting has revealed droppings in other rooms too, but no sign of the mice! They are clearly not interested in my traps, any tips?

You are welcome to borrow my terrier, she is very friendly and non yappy, but rather deadly to anything small and furry. Mice are a speciality, much enjoyed every autumn.

Think carefully before getting a cat! My cat has released two live mice in the house. We ended up naming one of them as it took over a week to catch the bloody thing. Female cats in my experience are better for catching things but it's a case of personality as my cat doesn't like to kill anything (birds, mice, grasshoppers, butterflies...) So we're building our experience at catching wildlife!
My brother got a cat for the mice they have (live near a railway) and the cat just sleeps on a pillow watching them play. Presumably feeling very smug with itself.

Try an ultrasonic pest deterrent. Plugs into a standard walk socket and emits ultrasonic waves which are supposed to be like nails down a blackboard to rodents. I used one years ago and it worked really well. They also deter flies, spiders and mossies.

Mines currently plugged in in the bedroom to keep mossies out as I react very badly to bites it seems to be working.

You can buy them fairly cheaply on amazon but they don't work through walls or closed doors so you might need several for different rooms.

Thank you Mitzi I liked that. He sounds dedicated to his art.

Mars bar 100%. I'm terrified like you, I have tried peanut butter and choc spread. Mars bar got them in record time. Make sure the traps are in towards or by the side of wall/skirting board so they don't have to come out too far. Peanut butter does work but put in so they actually have to lick it off, don't put too much on otherwise they can get at it without going on the trap. There are black traps with a plastic cage type thing over the bait, I found those the best as they had to move closer to try get the bait.

He is. As his compatriot is to her installations of grass and fur at the bottom of the stairs in the morning after she's performed her gardening responsibilities.

@MitziK Grin my cat runs away from spiders. An earwig crawled across his paw and he just gazed at it. Useless. He did bring me a leaf once

Stable cat on the other hand.. often kills 2 rabbits or mice at once and that's a slow day

Pesimistic · 28/07/2020 18:08

Get some traps but dont set them, let them think they are safe then bait then with peanut butter, make sure you place them against the skirting board you need about 4 per room for them to be affective

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/07/2020 18:10

A cat, definitely.
Other people in my block have mouse problems, we don't, never heard or had her catch any here.

  • and despite being an indoor cat at home, she is very good at catching them when I take her on holiday.
CraftyGin · 28/07/2020 18:15

Imagine that you live in Edinburgh and coexist with the mice.

Meanwhile, keep your house scrupulously clean (eg all loose food in Tupperware).

Davros · 28/07/2020 18:15

DCat seems to have killed this last week. It was a total surprise, she is nearly 13 and has never caught a beast before! I could rent her out but I fear you'd be disappointed and have a big bill for her favourite food and treats

I put poison bait down and worked really well. The dead mice just shrink/mummify after usually hiding in the walls or garden and barely make a smell.

According to her thread posted in the litter tray, you need to borrow @welcometohell ‘s cat!
