To think that parents should stop counting age in months after they reach two?

Just saw on another thread someone wrote "My 29 month old".... They're two!!

Loads of my friends seem to do this and it makes it more of a headache to work out their children's age (I scraped a C in Maths GCSE 😂).

OP posts:

I say 22MO online because it’s quicker to type but in real life I say ‘nearly 2’ or just say he’s 2 if I’m feeling lazy/not really bothered about the conversation and have done for the past month or so. When he’s 2, I’ll just say ‘he’s 2’ definitely.

There’s a particular Breastfeeding Facebook group I’m on where people are constantly talking about their 34 month olds or whatever. Like who can be bothered with that?!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 27/07/2020 19:03
@theformerporpentinascamander I'm guessing that's more than 10, less than 20 🤔😅
15 years 11 months and 13 years 9 months. I usually say "almost 16" and "almost 14" Grin

modgepodge · 27/07/2020 19:11

Totally agree OP. I’d say after 18 months actually (after that it’s nearly 2). Before children I thought after a year was ridiculous but now my child is 16 months (😂) I seem to have changed my mind. Perhaps I’ll change it again when we get to 18months!!

Medical settings/conversations about development are different, you may need to be more specific. It always threw me when getting my child weighed when they asked how many weeks they were. After 12 weeks - who knows?! They’re 8 months!!

gypsywater · 27/07/2020 19:11

@Laaalaaaa Well it is a tad hyperbolic, no?

BKCRMP · 27/07/2020 19:13

I use years for the most part unless I'm speaking to a medical/developmental professional as my DD has additional needs and there is a massive difference between a 59 month old and a 48 month old.

MiniMum97 · 27/07/2020 19:14

I agree. It's from age 1 this should stop. 1 year and whatever months is acceptable if absolutely needed but not usually relevant.

He's 1, or just over 1, or 1 1/2, or nearly 2 should suffice for almost all scenarios.

It's confusing to say 29months. I just have to calculate and translate in my head what that means ie about 2 1/2, so pointless and confusing to say 29months when you could have just said 2 1/2 in the first place.

MiniMum97 · 27/07/2020 19:19

Just to add that my son is 23 (years not months lol) and when my son was young NO-ONE did this and we all managed to discus our children's development without difficulty. So that's a rubbish excuse.

Frazzled13 · 27/07/2020 19:25

I think it depends on the context, if you're worrying about your child's development in a particular area, it is relevant if they're 25 months or 35.
But in casual conversation where someone asks how old your child is, I would just say 2.

Rollingfog · 27/07/2020 19:34

How do you even have the time to know that your child is 47 months old when you have young children? After 1 their age is years, before 1 absolutely use months it would be just as over complicated as saying my son is 2/6 of a year when he’s 4months

Jarofflies · 27/07/2020 19:38

My maths is rubbish, I stopped at 1! Only time I used months after that was with a doctor or health visitor.

Bupkis · 27/07/2020 19:42

It is something I did with ds, because he was under various paediatrician etc for GDD, and months came automatically. I didn't do it with his sister's.

I now work in early years, and tend to think of the children's ages in months due to the development sheets we work with.

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 27/07/2020 19:44

DS is almost twenty months, in day to day life if asked I'll say he's two in December, I stopped with months at 18 months, (although said he was eighteen months for about six weeks in total). Soon I'll say he's nearly two, two and a half, nearly three, three and so on. No one needs to know exactly how old your child is, most of the time it's just polite conversation anyway.

hammeringinmyhead · 27/07/2020 19:48

DS is 21 months next week. I reckon as of then I will say "2 in November" or "nearly 2" but the only people to ask me recently were parents of other toddlers who know exactly what I'm dealing with (running, on the go constantly but not talking yet!)

feistyoneyouare · 27/07/2020 21:22

The Rants Of An Angry Momma Bear on Facebook spoofs this beautifully. 'My 64-month-old' etc etc. Grin

pretendingtobezen · 27/07/2020 21:31

Agreed. If it was a January birthday:
Just turned 2 (Jan/Feb)
Was 2 in January (March/April/May)
2 and a half (June/July/August/Sept)
Will be 3 in January (Oct-Dec)
3 years
And so on. Simples Smile

1Morewineplease · 27/07/2020 21:37

I’m 675 months old.
Do I need to apply for something or register for something?
Do I need help?

PinkSnowAndStars · 27/07/2020 21:44

I’m 402 months old.

Shit that’s depressing.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 27/07/2020 21:45

You are a disgrace 😂😂😂

gypsywater · 27/07/2020 21:49

Utter disgrace Grin

Kb12 · 27/07/2020 21:50

@laaalaaaa totally agree with you. Extremely petty to start a thread about this

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 27/07/2020 23:04

Curious about the other thread now Confused

Love the Op being called a disgrace Grin

Kb12 · 27/07/2020 23:35

It's AIBU to use a potty in the park

SallyWD · 28/07/2020 07:05

I agree with you. I find it really odd!

ZeldalovesLink · 28/07/2020 07:12

Ha ha, no, I agree with you OP. There's something rather twee about it. Can we stop calling children 'little ones' at the same time?

Yes and yes!

Maybe there’s a world of difference between a 24 months old and a 35 month old but other than a medical professional or other kind of child specialist, who honestly cares? Most people asking a child’s age are just making polite conversation and don’t really care how much over 2 a child is.

Sailingblue · 28/07/2020 07:12

I think a few months can make quite a big difference at that age. I tend to do months until 2 (although it feels less natural after 20 I think) and would definitely do the 21/2 as a midpoint.
