AIBU or is a bit of disruption part of life?

Due to not having a holiday this year we are having some work done on the house, specifically a new bathroom suite. Next door are having an extension and a new kitchen. It just so happens that this work has coincided, so today there have been quite a few vans etc in the street and her builders have had some big items delivered, meaning there have been some lorries parked outside. We were just in the garden having a chat when the man from up the road came round to complain about the noise and general disruption. The road was blocked for a few minutes whilst her freezer was being unloaded but the road goes round in a loop so cars could always have gone the other way. We apologised but he was just ranting at us about how selfish people are these days. Am I being unreasonable in thinking that some disruptions in life are unavoidable?

YANBU.
I live on a Crescent and a few people are having extensions and other work done, vans all over. People can wait a few minutes, it won't kill them.

I think it's really bloody rude to block the road...I expect to be able to leave my house and come back when I wish...oh and whenever anyone does this, they're always just going to be a couple of minutes...it's invariably longer.

feduptimesamillion · 27/07/2020 16:18

I feel with these type of things (disruption, building works, parties, parking somewhere you shouldn’t because it’s ‘just a few minutes’ etc. etc.) is part of life when it’s for your benefit and really annoying for everyone else.

Their time will come when they get to think “oh, it’s just part of life” and something will probably annoy you in the future!

How do you think they should have delivered the freezer, air drop by helicopter? Are you also one of those people that blares their horn at bin lorries?
BurnIt · 27/07/2020 17:00

I'd ignore him - someone obviously pissed on his cornflakes this morning.

And how is anyone ever supposed to get things delivered in that case?
GrannyBags · 27/07/2020 17:08

As I said in my op, if he wanted to go out in the car he could have gone out the other end of the road, but as it was he was walking his dog. Next door are having a skip delivered tomorrow - I did suggest lowering it from a helicopter! Both lots of workmen started after 9am and have finished for the day so the noise was not early/late.

Blocking the road is ridiculous.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 27/07/2020 17:22

We are having work done and I am really hoping it inconveniences my twatty neighbour.

Maryhadalittlejam · 27/07/2020 17:29

I think if there is an alternative route its not a prombem for them to unload
I think people are just fed up now, I wouldn't take it personally

Thislittlelady · 27/07/2020 17:30

People round here have created absolute mayhem getting stuff done. There’s no other way unless your ducking magic! Let the moaners moan. He won’t moan when he’s blocking the road.....

GrannyBags · 27/07/2020 17:35

There are eight houses, four on each side of the road so you could easily see the road was blocked and go the other way. You could possibly have squeezed past but might have gone onto the grass out the front of the house opposite next door. They are lovely and even asked if we needed to put cars on their drive etc

The street where I work, which is mixed business and residential, is totally blocked by anything larger than a car arriving.

Parking spots along one side are generally full. Everyone has to just suck it up. It's a dead end too at the top, with just a small track back round to a main road so no alternative.
The bin wagons reverse all the way up so potential to be stuck for 15 mins everytime!

It's just life 🤷‍♀️
It must wind the residents up no end at times as one of the businesses is a factory, so plenty of deliveries etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/07/2020 17:38

We live on a narrow, dead end road (although in emergencies there is an alternative off road access). The road being blocked is while not a daily occurrence, it happens several times a month. It is just part of life. The only time is causes major inconvenience is when a vehicle gets stuck on the junction (like our removal lorry did... Took them 45minutes to free it!). Everyone just found it funny. It is just part of life with narrow roads. But we do all let delivery firms know to send small vehicles if possible.

BacklashStarts · 27/07/2020 17:39

Yeah that’s life, you don’t always get to walk in a perfectly straight line in silence.

LST · 27/07/2020 17:42

@formerbabe you're so funny 🤣🙈 I bet you're ace at parties

formerbabe · 27/07/2020 18:21

If you think I'm opinionated, you should meet my dh! @LST if we're ever at the same party, you'll find me at the buffet Wink

Well that's me told then, I can never have a delivery lorry bringing me anything again because the only way to get anything to my house is to temporarily block the road for a short while.

Next time I need a new fridge freezer or sofa I promise to take a Sainsburys trolley and wheel any items back.

LST · 27/07/2020 20:05

Hopefully no one gets in your way @formerbabe

HeddaGarbled · 27/07/2020 20:16

No one is being unreasonable! The coincidence of you both having work done at the same time is unfortunate and not your fault, but if I were you’re neighbour, I’d find it annoying.

Morsmordre · 27/07/2020 22:05

@BurnIt

I'd ignore him - someone obviously pissed on his cornflakes this morning.
Take the great advice from BurnIt OP. Grin

Jeez - people can't even wait a couple of minutes for a delivery anymore and feel so fucking entitled. You had already apologised and work had been starting after 9am and finishing early in my opinion.

He had a brass neck to come over and say something to you in the first place - I'd just have told him to do one!
