9 month old not rolling, crawling or standing

Thisisnotataste · 27/07/2020 14:31

DD 9months can sit but sits slumped over not entirely upright.
She can roll onto her side from her back but not all the way and not at all from front. She won't bear any weight on her legs if we hold her up
She will lie on her front for short periods but isn't a fan.
I'm really worried as her older sister was late doing these things but not this late.
She eats well and can guide a spoon into her mouth and hold and drink from sippy cup. In fact she puts absolutely everything in her mouth. She's very bendy- spends most of her time with a foot in her mouth.
Is this normal? Should I be worried and if so- what can I do?
Could this be a sign of significant developmental delay?

I've called HV every couple of months this year and they always say "its normal" that she's so behind but it doesn't feel normal.

Well I always suggest calling your HV but as you have already done that I just thought I would reassure you. My DD(3) was not a fan of tummy time, rolled half hearted now and again but was not much interested in moving. She crawled on her first birthday, 2 weeks later stood up and started to walk. I remember the worry feeling, convinced myself my DD was broken Blush

Caplin · 27/07/2020 14:35

DD was super slow, started crawling at 11 mths, walking at 18 mths.

She is one of the most active, super coordinated, sporty 10 year olds you could meet with a full on 6 pack and she is a natural at the piano.

Slow starts mean nothing other than a naturally cautious personality.

Fatted · 27/07/2020 14:36

Both of mine were late movers. I don't think they rolled really with much purpose until about 9/10 months. Neither crawled until a year old. Youngest went through a bum shuffling stage first. Both walked around 16/18 months.

Despite what people say, not every baby crawls or does things in an exact order or by a specific time.

What I would be concerned about is if she does not hold her weight on her feet at all? Is she distressed as in in pain when you try to do this?

Thisisnotataste · 27/07/2020 14:37

Thank you. Its reassuring to hear other kids didn't.

I think its the lack of rolling and the sitting slumped that worry me most. She just doesn't have any strength in her upper body

Standing- she's not in pain no, there's just no resistance when we hold her up. If I put any of her weight on her legs they just crumble under her.

Any family history of hypermobility?

Chocoholic12 · 27/07/2020 14:52

My son sat up early and took his first steps at 9 months old, but didn't speak atall until he was about 5 (couldn't understand him though was his own language). Said mummy for the first time when was around 7. He was at speech therapy until he was 11 and speaks beautifully now hes a teen. Sounds posh compared to his friends as he has had to work so hard at his pronounciation. What I mean to say is they are all soooooo different I'm sure your little one is just fine ❤

Zippea · 27/07/2020 15:03

Both mine were late movers. One was slightly behind her peers in the baby group and didn’t walk until 15 months. The other really delayed - no reason at all but didn’t crawl, scooted on bum and walked at 3. Both whole and healthy pre teens.
No one can tell you not to worry - I did plenty. I kept in contact with the health visitors and paediatrician - one told me it’s a marathon and not a race. Completely didn’t appreciate the advice at the time but can now see it for what it is.

Boom45 · 27/07/2020 15:07

My daughter was the same. Shes got hypermobilty and low muscle tone. At 7 it makes no difference to her at all (although she's not very good on the monkey bars!) but we did see a physio with her for diagnosis and some excersices. Thay said, 9 months isnt massively late for most of those things so you might have to insist on being seen by a doctor. I had to convince the HV that something wasnt right and the GP was great once I saw him

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 15:09

My DD couldn’t stand/pull up until 18months and didn’t walk until 22 months, no physical issues just super cautious I guess 😂 she’s 13 now and a ballet dancer.

HarrietM87 · 27/07/2020 15:13

My friend’s child was like this - was eventually diagnosed with hypotonia (low muscle tone, can be linked with other conditions). It’s almost certainly fine but definitely worth getting her checked out.

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 27/07/2020 15:17

My 10 month old is pretty good at sitting so can't help there but she hasn't done any of the other things you listed, but neither had my older dd at this age so I'm not worried!

BurtsBeesKnees · 27/07/2020 15:18

My dd never crawled or cruised. She's roll around the floor to get about from about 12 months old. Then at 14 months stood up and walked across the living room.

Speak to your hv but all babies are different so try not to worry too much

Couchbettato · 27/07/2020 15:29

I think all kids have areas where they are Infront and behind.

My son was crawling and sitting properly by that point but his fine motor skills werent developed at all. He still can't guide a spoon to his mouth and he's 15 months, but I am seeing improvements.

He also couldn't hold a sippy cup himself, and even though he can now, he is very lazy about it and finds things to prop it up on or brings it to me to hold for him.

But he also has no words yet. Babbles, but doesn't habitually say mama or dada. My friend's son who is 3 week older could say mama and dada in context at 10 month, but couldn't sit or stand.

He has excelled in gross motor function though where other kids his age may have a social advantage or fine motor advantage.

Lulaloo · 27/07/2020 15:36

You have perfectly described my older children. Cannot ever remember them rolling, wouldn’t weight-bear at a year. Both ended up bottom shuffling, never crawled and walked very late. But, they were then very very active growing up. Our youngest was the complete opposite. Try not to worry.... easier said than done😁.

Thisisnotataste · 27/07/2020 16:00

No family history of hypermobility but when i Google it she does seem to have some aspects of that. And of low muscle tone... Google is dangerous though! Grin
Thanks everyone. I think because I can't see anyone I can't really compare except to my elder DD.
I'll push a little in conversation with HV about low muscle tone and maybe seeing paediatrician perhaps in a few months.
And in the meantime won't worry... too much... or at least I'll try...

It sounds on the late side of normal to me. My older one was like that, she didn’t roll or crawl until about 10 months. Now she’s 5 and belts around everywhere.

I think you should flag it with your health team so that you’re in the system just in case she does need a bit of physio or something, and keep pushing if they try to fob you off. But hopefully you will be able to cancel the appointments because she turns out not to need them!

paellaandpies · 27/07/2020 16:04

By “late side of normal”, I mean still within normal range for learning to crawl and walk, I mean!

Thisisnotataste · 27/07/2020 16:07

Final question...
Jumperoo. Helpful or not for this?

OP posts:
LoveAfternoonTea · 27/07/2020 16:56

Would you say her strength and gross motor abilities have declined in the last few months? E.g. does she find it harder to lift her head off the floor if lying on her front than she used to? Do her fingers tremble? I don’t want to panic you, it is very likely nothing to worry about. But I have been here and it did end in a bad diagnosis for DD - but very rare, so highly unlikely to be affecting your DD. In the case of DDs condition, time is of the essence though. You can PM me if you would like any more details.

clareykb · 27/07/2020 17:00

My twins crawled at 1, stood up at 18m and walked at 23m! They were diagnosed with hypermobilty disorder at about 18m and had physio and prescription footwear which helped. They are now 6, totally fine and great at dancing and gym! I would ask h.v as that is how we accessed physio however we were told that we wouldn't be referred unless they weren't walking by 18m as anything up to then was within normal range of development.

ememem84 · 27/07/2020 17:04

Dd will be one on Wednesday. She’s not crawled (although bum shuffles) has rolled once so can do it but chooses not to. And isn’t showing any interest in standing yet.

Hv has also said not to worry.
