Who is being unreasonable here?

The bin men for not emptying a landfill bin which is on the front drive but not at the end of the drive or the people living there for not putting it down at the end of the drive.

The bin has to be out by 9am and it was but the bin men came early at 7am and nobody was quick enough to get up, get dressed and get the bin down to the end of the drive.

Rubbish collection routines are a bit out of sync at the moment due to covid.

If you call the council and let them know what happened, they are likely to collect it before next collection day or allow you to put a black sack outside with your bin next time (like the collection after Christmas).

But for peace of mind and in the interests of helping our services as much as possible, do put it out the night before in future.

slipperywhensparticus · 27/07/2020 11:21

Ring them they will have to come back to collect but be prepared for the advice to change on the website

2pinkginsplease · 27/07/2020 11:23

Our council state that bins should be out by 7am On collection day.

2pinkginsplease · 27/07/2020 11:24

Some days our bins get collected at 7.30 am others it’s not until 2pm.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 27/07/2020 11:26

Generally I put mine out the night before (but no earlier as otherwise you risk complaints that you’ve blocked the pavement, which is fair enough as they’re narrow and some people try to leave their bins there all the time).

However if the council have - effectively - said they won’t collect until after 9am but come early, they should either have changed the advice on their website or come back to collect missed bins.

TurnOffTheTv · 27/07/2020 11:30

I just checked our council website to check our times (we always do night before so I've never checked) and its says 7am

So I looked at a few others and they all say 7am, which council are you with? have they changed the times?

SantaClaritaDiet · 27/07/2020 12:00

@Burnthurst187

If the bin has to be out by 9:00am and the bin collectors come at 7:00am then clearly the bin collectors are at fault

People who think that the OP is in the wrong, next time you go to a train station or airport and find that your train\plane left two hours early I take it that you won't be complaining

It's hardly the same is it thought.

For a collection scheduled at 9, I would put bins out no later than 8am!

The same way that if you book a bin cleaning service, you give them a rough window, they don't turn up 1 hour after the expected time or they know they'll waste their time because the bin is still full...

2 hours early is a bit much, call the council - at least they can update their times.

VettiyaIruken · 27/07/2020 12:06

Does the council website say put it out before 9 (if so, which area is this?) or does it say before 7 but you are at the end of the route and in reality they don't normally get to you until 9?

tinytemper66 · 27/07/2020 12:23

We were told that there will be differences in terms to collections due to Covid19.so we have to put out the night before in case they come early.

CarolVordermansArse · 27/07/2020 13:01

For everybody saying I was unreasonable, am I supposed to put the bin out the night before when I know they don't normally come until after 9am and 9am is the time specified on the council website?

Logically you are not unreasonable. However our collection time has changed to earlier so that the bins can be emptied before the days become too hot (in spite of the pouring rain and howling winds we have at the moment). Ours always go out the day/night before.

Assume you have looked on the website in case there have been any updates for the summer collections?

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 27/07/2020 13:28

Always put the bin out the night before

Sunnysidegold · 27/07/2020 13:40

I think you were in the right op. If the earliest collection is nine am then your bins don'ts have to out until that time. Unless maybe things are disrupted due to covid?

I wouldn't expect them to come onto my drive to get any bins regardless of the time.

TurnOffTheTv · 27/07/2020 15:12

This is when the OP doesn’t come back because the website has been checked and it’s 7am and she won’t tell us what council it is 😃

ChangeThePassword · 27/07/2020 15:18

As far as I am concerned if I follow the council guidelines about when the bin has to be out then they should empty it

That wasn't what you asked.

They are not unreasonable to not take a bin that they don't know is for collection.

YANBU to expect them to collect it when they say they will.

I am surprised that they say 9am though. My binmen usual arrive at 11 or 12, but we are still told to have the bins out by 7.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/07/2020 15:23

I thought everywhere was bins out for 7am. They won't come and take your bin off your property unless you have a pull out service.

Thislittlelady · 27/07/2020 15:26

Sorry. I think you need to put bin out night before at the end of the drive. Refuse collection are told to get bins from a certain place. They won’t walk up your drive if the bin is meant to be kerbside.

Livpool · 27/07/2020 15:26

We (and everyone in our street) put it the night before

EatsShootsAndRuns · 27/07/2020 15:27

Ours have to be out by 5:30 am and are usually collected around 6:30 am. It can be a bit competitive the day before as some elderly neighbours seem to strive to have theirs out first. Grin

heartsonacake · 27/07/2020 15:28

YABU. You know exactly where the bin is meant to be if you want it collected.

So they came, it wasn’t where it should be, so they didn’t collect it. Makes sense; they can’t go up and down everyone’s drive they don’t have the time.

MrsR87 · 27/07/2020 15:37

If the time you are advised by the council is 9am then the bin men are in the wrong if they collected earlier. However, I have heard of some councils having to change the times unexpectedly recently because of COVID related problems and having to draft different staff in etc, so it doesn’t surprise me.

In terms of in being cm away from where it should be, as daft as it may seem, bin men are under no obligation to collect it. We are surrounded by fields and it gets very very windy, so to me it makes sense to shield my bin next to a wall which is approximately 30cm from the edge of my property as otherwise the contents often end up all over the drive because the bin has been blown over. Our old collection team saw that as reasonable and would collect and place back there so that the empty bin did not roll into peoples cars. The new team will not do this. I’ve contacted the council about this and they say
We have to leave the bin at the edge of the curb. I’ve explained be don’t have a curb as it’s a private drive to which they now say I have to leave it in the road which leads to my neighbours house. Daft really but have to stick to it or they don’t collect. Our collection is at 6.15am like clockwork so we leave out the night before and pray it doesn’t blow over 😂😂😂

Alloverthegrapevine · 27/07/2020 15:50

I think you need to check the website. I imagine something has changed, they haven't started turning up 3 hours earlier than they're telling the public to have the bins out.

Although, if they have, report it as a missed collection.

lanthanum · 27/07/2020 15:54

If it clearly says somewhere that it needs to be out by 9am, then you can complain. If it's just a case of "they never normally turn up until after 9" then you can't. It's possible they are working routes slightly differently at the moment, so check whether there has been any update to instructions. [Our council currently have a system whereby you are only guaranteed your green bin being emptied every four weeks, but we can put it out every two weeks and if they have time they'll do as many extra streets as they can. It's working quite well for working with their reduced capacity - they can only have one loader in the cab instead of the usual two, so they're slower.]

TidyDancer · 27/07/2020 15:55

I think the OP might've got herself confused between bin collections (which do generally start at 7am) and the refuse tip (which mostly open at 9am). Guessing she won't be coming back to confirm but I bet that's what's happened.
