Had a locksmith come this morning to replace the locks. He said he had to ‘take a bit out of the door to make it fit’. Surely, if this is your job, you should be able to do it neatly. Top lovely straight line in the door is original, bottom bosh it job is how he ‘fitted’ the new lock in the door. To add insult to injury he said ‘it’s a beautiful door’. I didn’t add, ‘well it was before you rogered it with a chisel’. I know I’m supper fussy about quality of work, so AIBU?

The only bit that would annoy me is the nearly stripped screw head top left.

Fitting isn't amazing but I couldn't get excited about an additional mm gap

But yeah the screw would bother me and I'd have probably replaced it rather than leave the problem for down the line

SimonJT · 27/07/2020 10:35

@GreyGardens88

I've never seen a lock like that before, what's the scale in that picture?
They’re called night latches.
SimonJT · 27/07/2020 10:37

@TinySleepThief

I wouldn't be happy with the mess he had made under the lock so I probably would have asked for a discount. However im baffeld sat here trying to work out why 2 of the screws dont seems to actually be attached to the door... Confused
Its a night latch

MoominWoomin · 27/07/2020 10:45

The top looks machine cut hence why it is perfect. The bottom as you say has been cut with a chisel but the problem is he is cutting into the end grain there which is pretty difficult to get a smooth cut with a hand tool. I'd expect a joiner to get it as perfect as you are wanting but not a locksmith. Also no one will notice but yourself.

CuntryRhodesTakeMeHome · 27/07/2020 10:48

I can't see any problem with this.

Is it a new-build, OP? (By that, I mean: "does it stand out to you because everything else is all shiny and new and perfect?")

ExclamationPerfume · 27/07/2020 10:51

Who is looking at the edge of the door? I wouldn't even notice it.

AlwaysCheddar · 27/07/2020 10:52

Rubbish job.

LakieLady · 27/07/2020 10:52

The chisel work at the bottom is appalling. I think I might have been able to do better, and I'm cackhanded.

KitKatastrophe · 27/07/2020 10:54

I wouldnt have even noticed. Even when I looked at the picture I could hardly tell.

IamMaz · 27/07/2020 10:56

I'm fussy [and do lots of DIY myself] and I would NOT be happy with that! It would annoy me every time I used it.
I think that's why I do so much DIY - only myself to blame!!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/07/2020 10:57

Had to put my glasses on to see the problem lol

feebeecat · 27/07/2020 10:57

SimonJT 😂😂

Just shut the door, it will be fine, you won’t see it and it will still be beautiful.

Woodifer · 27/07/2020 10:57

When I looked I saw the body of the lock itself is curved (I presume your last lock was straight edged?). To get the exact curve with wood would be very difficult: he's done a stepped profile to accommodate the curve (with minimal gap)

Naillig222 · 27/07/2020 10:59

As moomin said above, the top would have been cut in a factory while the door was being made. Of course that's going to be a perfect finish.

Cutting into wood outside of that environment isn't going to have the same finish.

FiveShelties · 27/07/2020 10:59

What are the left screws fixed to? They look as though they do not go into the door.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 27/07/2020 11:02

I am usually super perfectionist about stuff like this, but even I would not bother complaining about that...

SimonJT · 27/07/2020 11:02

@FiveShelties

They’re holding the lock together, they shouldn’t go through the door.
Nicklebox · 27/07/2020 11:12

It's a hard wood door not soft wood so it's much harder to cut neatly we had this problem when having our internal doors fitted the first guy that came said he hadn't got the correct tools to do the job neatly and suggested getting a proper joiner which we did. You won't notice the gap once it has been filled.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/07/2020 11:12

Poorly done. But even if someone came to make good, you’d just have a bigger gap. I had a “joiner“ do all sorts of shit on my house - employed by the builder. Sometimes you just have to live with things, other times get it fixed. This falls into the former category.

Bananacloud · 27/07/2020 11:26

Picture of the actual door is needed (I’m a front door admirer)

Yellow1949 · 27/07/2020 11:27

Thanks for all the responses. I know I’m super fussy...thanks @Chanjer for pointing out the screw, that will annoy me too now Grin.
Really interesting to see the results.....,,I really struggle to find decent trades people and often find recommended ones really aren’t that good......but as several of you have said you wouldn’t even notice, you might be one of those people who recommends someone to me, who I then think is awful!
Also to those who have said ‘add filler’....yep, I could, but I could also have changed the lock myself......I paid someone to come and do it to get a professional job and a professional finish, which means they ad the filler. I could have done that.

@CuntryRhodesTakeMeHome .....no it’s not a new build. It’s new to us and the previous owners were avid DIYers of the very cackhanded Variety. The door now fits in nicely with the rest of the house —which we are about to gut—

InspectorGoul · 27/07/2020 11:28

It's a shit job. It doesn't look to have been installed to British Standard (AKA to manufacturers instruction) as there's too much lock in fresh air for my liking. This makes it vulnerable. I would be getting a second opinion. The poor chiselwork is the least of your worries here I would say. I would want a proper installation and if this means a replacement door - too bloody bad!

Floralnomad · 27/07/2020 11:30

This is the reason my dh now does practically everything himself as he can’t find tradespeople who will work to his standards .

Beetlewing · 27/07/2020 11:31

What would you have wanted him to do differently? If you've ever tried to chisel a place for a lock, you'll know it's not an exact science. He 'may' have been willing to spend another half an hour sanding that little rough edge and filling it but it would've cost you ££

Nokiding · 27/07/2020 11:31

Looks fine to me.
