This is a bit of a self pitying post I know.I lost a crown 6 weeks ago.Managed to book a dental appointment for a.few.weeks later. Then the pain started phoned back then a couple of days later spoke to someone who or prescribed antibiotics.
Great I felt tired and sick on them but hey ho.Appointment was.cancelled by the practice. Then kind ly brought forward.Xray and tooth done uncomfortable but hoped it would subside.
Now 2 weeks on my face is swollen my ear popping and aching and generally feel lousy.
I clean my teeth well according to my dentist.I still think I have an abscess just in time for my return to work this week!.
I am fed up particularly as I hardly eat sweets and my dh who does has never had toothache. Before anyone says I know it isn't the dentists fault.
I just want to curl up in bed and hide.

Big ouch. Poor you.
An abscess can be a bugger to get rid of and extremely painful. Call the dentist / doctor first thing in the morning for some for antibiotics & try to get an emergency dental appointment- surely you're not expected to manage this without intervention.

Oh OP I really feel for you!! I got an abscess at the beginning of lockdown after my Dad died of covid and it has been 4 months of absolute hell!!! 3 courses of antibiotics and 3 root canals later and eventually the pain has subsided but I still need to have a crown. Like you I take really good care of my teeth and it has been an awful experience. I think you need another course of antibiotics, ring the dentist and get them to arrange a prescription for you. I also feel awful on antibiotics but with an abscess it really can’t be avoided. I can also highly recommend oil of clove if the tooth is still hurting, it’s the only thing that worked for me. Good luck Flowers x

Nothing but sympathy for you - I have recurrent abscesses. I had one that got so out of hand that in combination with a crown post that slightly loosened - I ended up with a hairline fracture to my jaw through erosion.

Best wishes for a good recovery.

whatisforteamum · 26/07/2020 20:38

Thank u both.I've had one before years ago and I remember it made me cry!😂I think it is the futility of the situation.Somehow the infection makes me feel quite low.
Lifeatthebeach I a m sorry to hear about you Dad.Anyone grieving in lockdown has my deepest sympathy.

have you rinsed with warm salt water often? Can help to get rid of infection for the short term.

whatisforteamum · 26/07/2020 20:41

Blimey embarrassingAdmissions that is dreadful.I will be straight on the phone first thing as I know not to leave an infection.

Can the dentist or your gp give you 30mg co codamol? Was the only thing that touched mine.

Sparklesocks · 26/07/2020 20:46

Really feel for you. I generally can handle pain quite well but tooth pain/abscesses are a special breed of it.

whatisforteamum · 26/07/2020 20:47

Oh good idea.Thanks.😊

You need to get an emergency appointment and have it drained. If your face is already swollen this can be really dangerous. Don’t want to freak you out but this can be really bad. And so much sympathy for you. I’ve given birth to 9 1/2 lbs babies with no pain relief and they were nothing compared to my tooth abscess!

catmum2019 · 26/07/2020 20:57

Op I had this! I went to boots and got ibrupruphan and codine tablets, two every four hours then paracetamol two hours later every four hours!!! It really helped and u can buy them rather than wait for docs and percription x

I had never had an abscess before, it seemed to go on forever and it certainly made me a bit tearful at times. I hope you start to feel better soon, sending lots of good wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thank you for your kind thoughts about my Dad, it has all been a bit rubbish xx

goose1964 · 26/07/2020 21:33

I feel your pain, as well as the cocodaol, ibuprofen plan clove oil is really good for numbing the gum. I have a mouthful of broken teeth due to dental abscess and root canals. I've had 2 break off during lockdown. I'm beginning to think I must get over my fear of dentists and see someone.

whatisforteamum · 26/07/2020 22:08

Oh no.Goose.😢I always go even though I don't like it.Please pluck up the courage to go.

I had a week of hell with an infected tooth
Try NHS 111 to start with
But in the end I went to an emergency 24 hour dentist , paid £350 and they cleaned the tooth and put in an emergency filling and gave me antibiotics
Where are you OP ? You don’t have to suffer indefinitely , but you do have to do some searching and calling
Sending my best , mine wiped me and I took
So many painkillers it’s not even true

Thisisworsethananticpated · 26/07/2020 22:29

But don’t suffer , see someone
Ps I look after my teeth too , but teeth grinding can cause this

Seriously after a week of pain I would have sold my kidney to have got treatment

BibiBlocksberg · 26/07/2020 22:35

Second what catmum2019 said, had similar a couple of weeks ago OP, its mega crappy!

Dental abscesses seem to be unique in the way they have the capacity to make you feel monumentally shit in all areas!

Can also recommend rinsing affected area w 3% Hydrogen Peroxide in water. Sainsbury’s pharmacy counter handed it over quite happily, no questions asked.

Hope you feel better soon!

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 22:40

So painful, massive sympathy and you should feel sorry for yourself as much as you like.

Dita73 · 26/07/2020 22:51

I feel your pain. They are horrific. I had one years ago and I’ve never experienced anything like it. I’d had it for a week and my face was swollen as was my gum and the inside of my mouth. No painkillers would touch it. In the end I was so desperate I got a needle and pushed it down the side of my tooth into my gum. As I pulled it out there was an explosion of the grossest stuff I’ve ever seen. As I pressed on all the swollen areas more of this stuff came out. Obviously I don’t recommend doing this as I think I was just lucky that I found the right spot to pierce and I’m very lucky it didn’t get infected further but the relief from the pain was bliss. I remember falling asleep after doing this and I slept for hours as the pain had been keeping me awake. I do hope you feel better soon. The pain is worse than childbirth Flowers
