Calpol!

Why does everyone always jump to using Calpol straight away and it's always the first bit of advice they give?

Baby sad, ah must give them calpol
Baby teething Calpol!
Baby has a temperature raised by 0.2 of a degree, oh they need calpol
Baby not sleeping - give them Calpol!

Like, is it only me who just doesn't like the stuff or want to medicate my child willy nilly?

Its the first thing any of my family members do or say and it makes me feel like a shitty parent for not wanting to give it to them! Obviously I would if I was advised by a HC professional.

Is this totally unreasonable?

YABU - I use Calpol all the time
YANBU - I don't use it all the time

Don't get me started about anbesol.

I use it if the children have a temperature or to soothe them on a bad teething day (although not my first choice for teething as ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory and seems to work better for that)

But I dont just dish it out willy nilly or 'just in case'. Surely you know your own child and just use a bit of common sense as to when its needed and when it's not.
But I wouldn't avoid using it if they are in pain or sick.

It amuses me when an OP flounces off a thread saying they're signing off, yet is still posting nearly 24 hours later. Grin

I had a weird calpol moment the other day.

One of my friends panic text because her son had a temperature so I told her to give him calpol and she said she couldn’t because she gave it a couple hours ago. I asked why (to see if it was related to the temperature!) and she genuinely didn’t have an answer... it sounded like she just gives it every four hours?!

Outside of that, there have been a few comments which have made me think other mums are quicker to reach for the calpol. But nothing to make me seriously question it.

I give it to 13mo DS when he is really upset about something, I can rule out other things (generally being over tired) and the boobs don’t work. It’s usually once a fortnight I’d say? Or it’ll be once a day for a handful of days and then not used for a month. I feel like that sounds about right?!

People on this thread seem pretty passionate about it!

@Babs709 so have you asked your friend what she's doing and why is she giving it when not required?

Babs709 · 27/07/2020 21:31

@Horehound no I really wish I had the balls to. She’s someone I met through a baby group, I use “friend” relatively loosely. (This temperature situation I mentioned got weirder too and I so wish I was brave enough to question it.)

Oh really?

Deary me poor baby
