Child in a trundle bed

Tattiespuds · 25/07/2020 15:12

I have two dcs both still in toddler beds.
Dc1 is 3 and a recent growth spurt has highlighted my original plan of keeping them in toddler beds til old enough for bunk beds won't work.
Dc2 is transitioning from cot to bed.

I'm thinking about in next about 6months to a year Dc1 will need a bigger bed.

Problem I have is although room isn't tiny it's a awkward lay out (cupboards/windows/radiator and plug sockets/chimney breast) and I won't fit two singles without having to remove wardrobes etc. With two toddlers beds all available wall space is all used, with space in the center of the room

I don't know if it's feasible to have a single bed with a trundle under which we pull out and put away I'm the morning.

Aibu to expect a 2 year to sleep every night in a pull out trundle for the next 3-4 years?

It's fine, it isn't as though you're sticking them in an unmade camp bed.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/07/2020 15:20

Absolutely fine!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/07/2020 15:21

It's also quite a safe option as trundle beds are low to the floor which works well with a 2 yr old!

AldiAisleofCrap · 25/07/2020 15:22

It’s fine just make sure you buy one where the bed is high enough that you can push trundle underneath with duvet still on.

Singlebutmarried · 25/07/2020 15:22

Absolutely fine

Until child in the higher bed has a bout of vomiting and liberally costs child in trundle bed with vomit.

Why not bunk beds?

blendedmummy · 25/07/2020 15:24

As long as it's good quality I don't see why not. It's better than having your eldest in a bed that's either too short or too high, and it doesn't sound like there's another option from your OP.

Tattiespuds · 25/07/2020 16:25

Thanks for the replies everyone. I feel likes it my only sensible option shy or moving wardrobes and chest of drawers etc to the hall which then comes with it's own problem 🤦🏻‍♀️ but still couldn't help feel I was bu for not giving my dc2 a "proper" bed.

@Singlebutmarried I was have the bed sat side my side I'll trundle out to middle of floor area so no vomit on head. I will get bunk beds when they are older. At 3 & just turned 2 they are too young.

@AldiAisleofCrap that's a good shout I don't fancy re making the bed every night.

Yes just make sure they have proper mattresses as some don’t as they’re more like day beds

Rainbowshine · 25/07/2020 16:31

I think IKEA do a bed exactly like what you have described. Might be worth searching for it’s name and then reviews?

lukasiak · 25/07/2020 16:41

Why not bunk beds?

That still happens in bunk beds. Speaking from experience.
BranchAndPoppy · 25/07/2020 16:43

I think it's fine. I'd do it until they're old enough for bunk beds. Then I'd get bunk beds, as you are planning to. Makes sense. I wouldn't out a 3 yo in a top bunk either.

negomi90 · 25/07/2020 17:05

Don't get bunk beds until your happy the little one will be able to climb on it safely.
They don't need to be safe to sleep in it, but they will (children being children) attempt to climb it when you aren't looking.
Its not just the development of the older one to consider when getting them.

The trundle - as long as it has a proper mattress is still a proper bed.

Picklypickles · 25/07/2020 17:30

My 6yr old is still in his toddler bed! He is pretty small but we are going to have to get something bigger soon I think! The idea was to get bunk beds as we are very short of space but I can't trust either of my hyperactive children not to kill themselves, I might just get rid of the toddler bed and build him a little padded nest on the floor!

Enderman · 25/07/2020 17:36

We’ve only just moved our 5 year old out into a cabin bed, it’s not too high and he loves it. It’s good for storage space. My other DC have a bed with a trundle bed, they sometimes use it when they want to share a room.

ipswichwitch · 25/07/2020 17:43

DS1 has the Ikea trundle bed, and his little brother decided he’d rather sleep there than in his room! It’s great, has a proper mattress and I can slide it under with the duvet still on. We pull it out as far as possible so DS1 doesn’t have to climb over his brother to go to the toilet in the night.
Only problem is it’s starting to wear the carpet down where the wheels run, but we’ve had it in place for 2yr now, and used it pretty much every night.

pinkbalconyrailing · 25/07/2020 17:45

it's fine.
however my (tall) dc stayed in toddler beds (160cm) until they were 7

claireyjs · 25/07/2020 17:49

My DD gas a trundle bed and I quite happily sleep on when my parents come to visit. To be honest it's no different to the top part of the bed if you invest in a decent mattress

Tattiespuds · 25/07/2020 17:56

@pinkbalconyrailing wow that's amazing. My dc only has a few inches till feet are touching the bottom and when sound asleep there is always and arm or leg hanging off the side. Despite that I'm still hoping to get a while out it yet. Just planning for what to do i between toddler bed and bunk bed.

@ipswichwitch that's brill, thanks for the heads up think I will put a rug under to save the carpet. You wouldn't happen to know the name of the bed?

Omg this thread is such a find for me. Mine are 3 and 2 and I've been wondering how long I can drag out the toddler beds for. Their room is small so 2 singles would mean no space for any other furniture etc. Never even thought of a trundle bed so thank you!

BubblyBarbara · 25/07/2020 18:06

I think it will be fine. None of mine really “associated” with their beds (in terms of spending waking time there) until at least 7 or 8

BoggledBudgie · 25/07/2020 18:11

I was forced to sleep in a trundle bed 11-14. It was awful, fine for an occasional sleep over but daily (or nightly) sleeping on it became excessively uncomfortable and I wished so bad I had a real bed.

BubblyBarbara · 25/07/2020 18:13

Think it’s terrible for a teenager but for a 2-4 year old.. their beds are not meant to be too soft or comfortable anyway for safety reasons

melj1213 · 25/07/2020 18:19

Yanbu, this is how my cousins shared a room for years because my aunt didnt want their younger siblings to risk climbing it and getting hurt, and the added bonus was that she didnt have to struggle to change the bedding on a top bunk.

It's no different to having two single beds apart from the fact you can push one out of the way to free up floor space. I would make sure to get a decent mattress for the trundle bed though as many come with a mattress that is ok for occasional use but isnt great for daily use.

Also take into account the space the trundle has and whether you can leave pillows/duvets on the trundle and pull it out ready made every night or if you need storage for it during the day. For my cousins they bought a deeper mattress so that it didnt fit under the bed frame with the duvet/pillows in situ, instead they had a storage ottoman at the foot of the bed and in the morning all my cousin did was put their pillow and duvet in the ottoman, put the lid on and push the trundle in. It took no longer than making the bed and meant their bedding was close to hand for the evening but was out of sight during the day.

Murfs · 25/07/2020 18:39

IKEA (Utacker I think) have stackable beds which might work? Get the better mattresses I'd you can afford too. They are pretty easy to lift. We got them for our box room and was thinking they would be handy as a toddler bed for our little one when the time comes.

This sort of thing? Can't see any problem with it at all, it's a decent mattress on wooden slats, just low down.
