Literally couldn't believe my eyes...who pays to buy egg cartons?? If you're interested, they also had cardboard tubes and bags of garden stones...

As lots of people have discovered, they don't wash well.

I haven't had any problems with mine.

viques · 25/07/2020 17:45

@Honeyroar

Sorry just realised they’re cut up egg boxes.
This is mumsnet. surely they are cutted up egg boxes. Grin
Purpletomato · 25/07/2020 20:30

The DC use pipe cleaners to clean inside the mouthpieces of their brass instruments. Proper smokers ones though, not tinselly craft ones.

@bookmum08

Oh good grief Hobbycraft (and others) have sold these for ages. Quite simply the concept of 'junk art' involves having this junk at home to do it with. Not everyone does for 101 reasons. Either buy it or don't. Who cares. In other news you can buy water in bottles....why when you can get it from a tap Grin
bottled water is a lifesaver for me!! I have a gut issue and get diarrhea from tapwater. But to offset my bottled water intake, everyone else in the house drinks tap water :) And I think there is only really a small minority who actually need bottled water for medical reasons. So agree with you in principal.
bookmum08 · 25/07/2020 21:40

TheSunIs I was kinda being sarcastic about what seems to be a Mumsnet thing about discovering something fairly ordinary being sold in shops that has been sold for years.
There was a thread the other day about supermarkets selling plain cakes !!

MehMehMeow · 25/07/2020 22:44

@SimonJT @TroysMammy I give you my organised cables and plugs

We’re a ‘seat down’ home, plus it’s only been the two of us in our home since early March so I’m comfortable with the sanitary status of our loo rolls

I've used pipe cleaners in the face masks I've made to shape round my nose. Makes them a very good fit Smile

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 25/07/2020 23:13

We never buy eggs (me allergic, DH vegan) so can see why people buy these.

TroysMammy · 26/07/2020 10:22

MehMehMeow I use mine to start off pea plants in the spring. I snip the bottom part and fold in before adding compost and a pea seed.

Just for the record it's not me personally that won't let the Brownies use toilet rolls. I'm only an Assistant Leader not Brown Owl. I was just quoting what we've been told.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/07/2020 11:10

It was MANY years ago now that we were asked not to put loo rolls in with the 'junk' craft stuff by schools & activity groups.

If people don't have a toilet roll holder and/or change the roll before washing their hands I can see why they're less than desirable for little ones making binoculars or whatever.

Friends school had to send out a letter asking parents to please wash yogurt containers etc before sending them into school - some people are just bloody grim & you have to allow for the least hygienic, so banning toilet rolls seems like a good idea to me!

I imagine when schools go back, if there's any model making, kids will only be allowed to use what they take in themselves.

MrsFionaCharming · 26/07/2020 11:26

A few years ago, we’d planned a craft involving pine cones for Brownies. I drove all over checking pine trees, but it seemed everyone else had got there first, and whilst sitting checking google maps to decide where to go next, my car battery died. Once the RAC restarted it, I gave up and bought a bag of Christmas scented pine cones from HobbyCraft.

I had no idea this would open up such debate! Can I throw ready grated cheese into the mix as another example of convenience over sense?

rosebud5678 up there with mashed potato. Also ready chopped onions and I've got the worst eyes for chopping onions despite trying every tip known to mankind but I'd never buy them like that.

ForeverBubblegum · 26/07/2020 17:11

I worked in a tobacconist a few years ago, they still sold both pipes and pipe cleaners. In fact there was a selection, and part of my job was talking people through the pros and cons of different types.

You could see the crafty people's head imploded when they ventured in and were asked what type they wanted.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/07/2020 17:24

@TroysMammy

Regarding the cardboard tubes, we are not allowed to use toilet roll tubes for craft in Brownies.
www.hse.gov.uk/myth/myth-busting/2015/case382-disabled-children-banned-from-playing-with-toilet-roll-centres.htm

It's a myth that these shouldn't be used.

bookmum08 · 26/07/2020 18:01

rosebud I often buy grated cheese because if you check the price per 100g if often cheaper than the block cheese. Yes I could grate my own cheese but I prefer to save money (to spend in Hobbycraft Grin).

I buy frozen mash because I live alone and fresh potatoes get wasted. I can cook exactly what I need with much less mess!
ZeldalovesLink · 26/07/2020 20:21

I’d buy them if a child needed them for a craft project because I’m vegan so don’t buy eggs.

JamesArthursEyelashes · 26/07/2020 22:38

Just had my shopping delivered from Tesco’s and the eggs are in a plastic box!
