I was walking with my boyfriend and his dog today, and for the umpteenth time the dog went up to another dog to greet it, very friendly, then cocked his leg and pissed all over it.

My boyfriend did not react at all, didn't telll his dog off or apologise to the other owner. When I've expressed horror at this behaviour before, he's thrown his hands up and said 'well I can't stop him'.

This time, I lost my shit. Had a few choice words and said I won't be going on any more walks with them. I think we're lucky one of us hasn't been thunped, or had our photo put up on social media for shaming. Boyfriend thinks I'm massively overreacting and did the whole 'are you OK? Is there something else going on?' thing.

So I ask you:

  1. Do you think it's fucking feral for dogs to piss all over other dogs?
  1. If your dog did this would you scold it, attempt to retrain it, and ultimately keep it away from other dogs if necessary?
  1. Would you think it strange if someone got angry about this?

I’ve seen it. It’s the dog trying to establish its dominance.

If it were my dog I’d be telling him off and apologising.

My dog used to come to work with me, and once (for no apparent reason; he was housetrained and never did it before or since to dog or human), he urinated on my colleague who was crouching down getting something from a shelf.

Of course I was highly apologetic, but there wasn't anything I could do training-wise as it wasn't a pattern. Unlike this case.

This is very bizarre. None of my dogs have ever peed on other dogs or been peed on. They do tend to pee over other dogs’ pee, one will pee on a lamppost, the other immediately goes to pee over it. Never seen a dog pee on another. I would tell off a dog if it did that.

I've had another dog do this once to my dog. I didn't say anything but was not happy.

It was a local dog who did it all the time so from then on when it was in the park I was ready for it and stood in between to block contact.

Apologies if I misjudged, it just struck me as really off for someone to be challenged about their dog weeing on other dogs to say 'is there something else going on'. It sounded to me very much like he was trying to deflect his own irresponsible actions by making out like you're the one with the issue when you're totally reasonable.

Same with the dog jumping on you and him rewarding the dog after you've rightly created a boundary. For me that would be a sign of total disrespect because I'd feel like he was being dismissive of me and yet again promoting poor behaviour from the dog.

He really should be starting from the position of ensuring his dog behaves appropriately and has boundaries, not letting his dog do what he wants and then taking a sulk if his lack of boundaries is questioned.

YANBU. It’s disgusting. His dog needs to be on a lead if it can’t be trusted not to purposefully urinate all over other dogs. Why should other people have to bath piss off their dogs?!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/07/2020 16:14

This has happened to my dog once, when he was a puppy. A neutered dog did it. Cocked his leg and peed on my dog's head. It's called over marking and us a sign of attempted dominance and poor socialisation.

The owner of that dog laughed and said it was his way of saying hello. I wasn't the only person to tell him it was hilarious dog humiliating other dogs, but he wouldn't have it. He doesn't get invited to dog walks any more. Sad for the dog, but the owner needed to deal with the issue, not ignore it.

As well as my two boy dogs will always piss on each other they will always piss over where the other one has pissed . It’s a typical male pissing match 😂
It’s dominance thing - each dog wants to be top dog in my case yet apart from this they got on fine and share a kennel
my other dog a frenchie would probably try and do the same as he’s a complete dickhead but he’s to small to do it effectively 😂

SupergirlPants · 25/07/2020 16:32

My dog has been peed upon by other dogs, once with a tall dog peeing and he ran underneath him, interrupting his flow - he's a toy breed so pretty small & can easily run underneath bigger dogs. Another time, a taller dog ran over when mine was peeing on a clump of grass, and competitively peed on the same clump, accidentally splashing mine in the process. Both accidents. Both as a result of being small & in the way, not by falling doggy victim to a targeting dog pee-er on-ner. On both occasions the other owner was horrified and apologetic, even though not at all their fault.

If your BF says nothing and can't see it's a problem, that's pretty grim. Like you, I would've been having words. Ew.

BenWyatt · 25/07/2020 16:33

My mum's dog walked under my dog while he was having a wee the other day!!

BenWyatt · 25/07/2020 16:34

Although obviously I wouldn't let him do it on purpose!!

dodgeballchamp · 25/07/2020 16:34

Grim! I would not let my dog do this and would pull him away and tell him off. The boyfriend sounds like he’s useless with the dog

MaryLennoxsScowl · 25/07/2020 16:34

There’s a dog we see regularly in the park that does this! I’d never seen a dog do it before either. Mine has managed to dodge so far but I don’t like that dog and the owners just laugh it off, so I avoid them. This dog also barks constantly and if it gets hold of another dog’s ball will not drop it when told to, so not very well behaved at all.
