Abdominal pain

Posting here for traffic

I've been having major abdominal pain in the centre of my tummy just above and around my belly button. It's like a severe cramping that comes and goes. The only think I can relate it to are labour pains. They definitely aren't labour pains though.

I have had a little bit of an upset stomach along side this but the pains are the main problem. They are literally making me double up in pain. They are worse if I eat or move or lie down.

Should I contact 111 or just see how it progresses. I am very aware of how much pressure our wonderful NHS is under and don't want to add to it unnecessarily.

For context it started on Thursday morning mildly and has got worse since.

That sounds suspiciously like appendicitis. You should contact 111

CasuallyFeminine · 25/07/2020 05:09

I would contact 111. Abdominal pain that gets worse over several days can be of concern. Don't worry about putting pressure on the NHS - this is exactly what 111 is for.

ottermum3 · 25/07/2020 05:38

I've had appendix removed and it was exactly like this. Especially the mention of pain around belly button.i would see a dr ASAP

threecatsownme · 25/07/2020 05:42

I've rang. A practitioner is going to call me back within 6 hours. I feel like a fraud! I'm not very good at asking for help. My tummy is so tender to touch though too now!

Thanks for your encouragement x

When you press down on it, is the pain worse while you are pressing on it or right after you have relieved the pressure (rebound pain)? The latter is quite common with appendicitis. Either way, though, don't feel guilty about ringing 111. It's what they are there for, and it is a very legitimate concern. Keep us updated!

threecatsownme · 25/07/2020 07:49

Hi

It pain is when I relieve the pressure! The GP that rang me said it was probably gastroenteritis and not to worry.

Does the GP know about the pain when you release pressure? Gastroenteritis doesn't sound right, especially if there's no vomiting or diarrhoea. It worries me that they've dismissed it without a proper examination.

threecatsownme · 25/07/2020 08:27

Yeah told them everything. Will see how I go and call back if needed.

It also relieves the pain a bit if I pull my knees up?

I would go to a&e,seriously don’t leave this. Sounds very like appendicitis. Good luck

Tuliptulip · 25/07/2020 09:17

Do you have a fever? I had bad abdominal pain that worsened over a few days and a temperature. My GP sent me to A&E thinking it might be appendicitis or diverticulitis. It actually turned out I had a nasty gynaecological infection, mostly around my ovaries, and ended up with 4 days in hospital, and a shed load of antibiotics. They said if I’d left it a few days longer it might have been life threatening (I am also rubbish at asking for help).

Makinglemonadefromlemons · 25/07/2020 09:38

The fact the pain is worse when you release the pressure from pressing sounds very like appendicitis, if it deteriorates while you are waiting for the call back, go straight to A&E - and don't drive!

Makinglemonadefromlemons · 25/07/2020 09:38

Sorry sent too soon!
Good luck!

GrumpyInTheMornin · 25/07/2020 09:50

I've had acute appendicitis and the pain wouldn't subside whatever I did.
Do you have a temperature op? If the pain doesn't subside I'd go to a and e. I thought I had food poisoning but I was actually very ill. Heart rate was 170+ appendix burst. I felt like a fraud going to a and e too, I thought they'd just give me dioralyte!

If it continues, go to a and e

NancyNoNickers · 25/07/2020 14:02

Hi @threecatsownme how are you?

threecatsownme · 25/07/2020 14:22

Hi

I'm not bad, although I am sitting up. Its much worse laid down or when I move around. I've taken some codine which I think has probably done the job. I don't like pain killers usually as they mask the problem but we're very welcome today.

Go down to A&E.
Ds had appendicitis in June. They took his temperature at the door of A&E, then listened to his symptoms and sent him straight up to the ward. He had it removed the next day.

threecatsownme · 25/07/2020 14:57

I don't have a temperature at all! It's so strange

If it’s like labour pain (gynae type pain as opposed to gastrointestinal), it can be endometriosis or an ovary cyst. Or appendicitis As per PPs.
I would go down to ED and get seen. Whatever it is, 111 fobbing you off isn’t enough.
Get better soon x

morefun · 25/07/2020 15:29

Hiya. I had the same thing back in January. Same as you, only comfortable position was on my side with knees up. It went on for a few days. Such a horrible pain!

Doctor said it was either duodenitis or gastritis and gave me some medication to take for a month. The medicine made me feel like crap so I stopped it after a couple of days but was feeling much better anyway. I avoided fatty foods and alcohol for a couple of weeks as I was scared of getting the pain again.

squanderedcore · 25/07/2020 15:29

Sorry you are suffering op.

Disclaimer: I am NOT an hcp!

But could it be pancreatitis?

The pain is mild at first and get worse after eating or drinking. It then may become constant, severe, and last for several days. Tends to worsen while lying down on the back and lessen while leaning forward in a sitting position.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 25/07/2020 15:33

Go to A&E, it needs to be looked into.
