Why is dd wetting herself? (age 10)

Sally872 · 23/07/2020 23:40

10 year old dd wetting herself most days. She says it is when she is laughing and she can't help it.

Not an amount of wee friends would notice so she isn't embarrassed but pants do need changed. Been going on for 7-10 days.

Initially thought she was distracted or lazy about coming home for toilet, but I have been reminding her and ensuring she goes regularly.

Google suggested stress incontinence (happens when laughing/sneezing/jumping etc) but I am not sure why it would happen now, or if she is a bit young.

Plan to track toilet and accidents, attempt kegals (no idea if she is doing it or not) and go to the doctor in a few days.

Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? And how it was resolved. If it is a urine infection would there be other signs?

Any advice welcome.

NC for obvious reasons. I had this issue as a child and it has continued every so often. I've had tests and everything came back normal. Is it weird to say some people do have a very weak pelvic floor and go the kegel route to fix it?

Good luck :)

nonicknameseemsavailable · 23/07/2020 23:47

Oddly my 11 year old has started doing this when she laughs too. Just since easter

indemMUND · 23/07/2020 23:47

GP appointment if you can get one, better than Google. Kegels at 10?

LostInTheColonies · 23/07/2020 23:52

Has she been eating and drinking more than usual? DD (then 8) started doing this at night 2 years ago, and was diagnosed with T1 diabetes shortly afterwards. I took her to the GP for a UTI check and the rest is history...

Other symptoms include changes in behaviour (dd was increasingly foul over the previous couple of months), tummy aches, unexplained weight loss.

Good luck!

1stMrsF · 23/07/2020 23:54

Maybe a UTI?

LostInTheColonies · 23/07/2020 23:55

Should add that T1 can be serious if not diagnosed, but is perfectly manageable!

DD's mood changes went on for a few months, then the increased wee / drinking / food kicked in just in the last couple of weeks before diagnosis. I thought the weight loss & increased eating was a growth spurt...

Constipation/impaction? Incontinence can be the only symptom, so don't judge by what faeces looks like, or how often she goes.

Sally872 · 24/07/2020 00:07

@User2398 and @nonicknameseemsavailable that's really useful to hear similar experience. Thank you.

@indemMUND intend to get GP appointment but trying to have some useful information when I go. Have attempted kegals tonight as as nhs website advises for stress incontinence but I am not hopeful she is doing them correctly, if at all.

@LostInTheColonies no other signs of T1 and accidents aren't at night. My niece has type 1 so always at the front of my mind. Glad you are finding it managable, thankfully my neice is too. Amazed by what her and her parents do every day. Well done!

@1stMrsF I am assuming there would be other signs if uti but perhaps not. Definitely going to gp on Monday to get that ruled out.

@rosiejaune I hadn't realised that, definitely going to GP to check out these kinds of causes. Thanks

My dd wet the bed after years of being dry & it turned out to be threadworms.

Mollymalone123 · 24/07/2020 00:15

Was going to say constipation- have looked after a child who was constantly wetting accidentally and without any sign of needing a wee until it was too late. Easily solved with help from continence service through gp

Sally872 · 24/07/2020 00:16

@socialdistancing hadn't realised that until this thread, thanks. Will ask her tomorrow when she last went for a poo.

@happymum12345 accidents aren't at night. Do you think threadworms are still possible? Worth considering, thanks.

My kid had a spell of bedwetting around Y6 SATs. Never before or since. I know of one of her peers the same.

Sally872 · 24/07/2020 00:18

thanks @mollymalone123 really useful to know constipation can cause this.

@shouldbedoing no accidents at night so I don't think it is stress related. Seems to be evenings when out playing. She tells me it is when laughing.

The reason constipation can be an issue is the lump of hard faeces presses on the bladder and reduces its capacity. So when they cough etc, there is nowhere for the force to go, as the walls can't stretch, so it pushes urine out instead.

Geppili · 24/07/2020 00:23

Threadworms cause incontinence

Crunchymum · 24/07/2020 17:09

Maybe use the advice you were given when you posted about your 4.5yo and their pissing issues a few months ago?

Sigh.

BubblesThaDragoon · 24/07/2020 17:21

@Crunchymum who pissed in your coco Pope this morning? Jesus

OscarWildesCat · 24/07/2020 20:23

My ten year old does this sometimes but I’m convinced it’s having too much fun to come home or being too lazy to go as she’s busy on the Xbox 🙄

worriedandannoyed · 25/07/2020 00:11

Have you ever heard of giggle incontinence? It starts around this age

Sally872 · 25/07/2020 08:23

@Crunchymum I am not trying to night train her, so stopping going back to nappies will not help. Thanks for taking the time to post Hmm

Thanks everyone else. Hadn't heard of giggle incontinence. Will look into it. Also GP on Monday.

Oh goodness! I now realise that I had ‘giggle incontinence’ around the same age!! Thank you worried - that was interesting info. I had one particular friend who made me absolutely roar and it was a real problem for around ....6 months I guess. It just seemed to put itself right and never came back again, not that we stopped roaring with laughter but it just stopped happening.
