To be totally fed up with trying to 'build a career'

All I want to do is be good at my job, grow, learn and develop and land better paid work to support my family into a better lifestyle.

I am so so tired of feeling like I have to fight harder than anyone else (only my perspective obviously) to try to get to where I want to be.

3.5 years iv been trying for a new role and what I am doing is clearly not working. I think my feelings are being compounded by my homeworking isolation from the workplace environment, August will be month 5 of working remotely. Iv been so resilient and usually am naturally fairly good at shaking it off, learning and moving on.

But iv just had enough. I find myself daydreaming of lottery wins and isolated homes in the country taking it easy and just doing as I please.

I can't be alone can I? A thread for a vent if anyone wants to join in.

Yes, even if you're happy and successful where you are keep your eye open for possibilities elsewhere, and be prepared to take them when they arise. This is key.
Covid-19 but.

Job vacancies are still out there @Sootikinstew even in this COVID19 era. Interviews by telephone Skype MSTeams etc.

Some companies are poor at developing and growing internal talent, they are constantly looking externally like sweeties in the shop window to bring in new blood. Anyone already employed is taken for granted and kept glued to their current seat because that suits the company rather than finding a replacement.

Whenever I went for interviews internally it shook things up and current management would be all slimey, making promises that they never intended to keep. My current Public Sector organisation is much better at fair interviews transparent process etc and I have a much better chance of (buzzword bollox alert) Z-Pathing. That is, instead of a gradual upward trajectory, you may have to try a few sideways moves combined with a few upwards to eventually gain seniority. Definitely don't let the grass grow, after 18 months in any role always be looking for your next move.

Don't allow your selfish management to take you for granted and stop your advancement! Take some risks, do something new, even if it doesn't work out pain can mean growth if lessons are learned along the thorny journey!

Seriously, move jobs if you can. Companies like that don't care about your progression, only a bum on a seat.

My last job was like that. I was good at my job, trained others, and yet always ignored for promotion or training. I found a better job that pays almost double now what I got before, and better training possibilities, promotions and managers that actually care.

The other companies will never change. Don't be loyal to them, they aren't loyal to you.
