Who was wrong here?

Person A is sat in car in ambulance bay outside hospital main entrance. Person B comes out main entrance holding hands with 2 children and walks behind car to cross the road. Small one-way road no cars coming. Person A reverses and almost hits one of the children but Person B pulls them back. Person A apologises but Person B doesn't respond but body language suggests they're not happy. Person A then changes to shouting at Person B for not using the crossing further down (the other way to where Person B was going) and drives away. Who is wrong? Should Person A have looked before reversing or should Person B have only crossed at the crossing?

OP you know you weren’t in the wrong. I appreciate you want validation but this is stupid. It’s obvious who is wrong.

Never walk directly behind an idling vehicle. Vehicles have blind spots and it's possible that a pedestrian won't be seen. Children in particular are at risk due to their height. The pedestrian should leave sufficient distance from the rear of the vehicle so they are easily seen in mirrors.

It doesn't matter if a pedestrian had right of way - it doesn't prevent you being killed, so you need you exercise caution and set good, safe examples for your children.

I put more blame on Person A ... at the point where they try to tell off Person B. Both could have done better, but Person A really made it into a problem situation.

Starbuggy · 23/07/2020 13:38

Both wrong, but A more so.

B should’ve used a crossing especially with small children who should be learning road safety

But A shouldn’t have been parked in the ambulance bay in the first place and should look behind them before reversing

NotFrozen · 23/07/2020 13:38

Person A 100% in the wrong

Thanks for all the replies. I'm Person B. Just wanted to get balanced views. Those who have said I shouldn't have walked behind the car with small children have a valid point especially in terms of teaching the children road safety. I was definitely stressed leaving the hospital as the appointment hadn't gone as I'd hoped and I had to make up the time I'd missed with work so wanted to get back quickly but it's something I'll think about next time. I guess I didn't think they would reverse without checking as it's a busy entrance so the chances of people passing behind the car are high.

Sorry to hear you have had bad news.

Mistakes happen, don’t stress about it. Flowers

Iwalkinmyclothing · 23/07/2020 14:46

A for not looking before reversing; yes, B should have used the crossing nearby but A can't assume there's no one there and not bother to check.

RiftGibbon · 23/07/2020 15:11

Person B was stupid for crossing behind a car with someone in it but person A was in the wrong for parking in an ambulance space and for reversing without checking.

PaulineScrambledPhones · 23/07/2020 15:15

Person A shouldn’t have been in the ambulance bay in the first place!

Chloemol · 23/07/2020 15:39

They are both wrong, and A doubly so as if in a car it shouldn’t have been parked in an ambulance bay

Somanysocks · 23/07/2020 15:44

Since when are we only allowed to cross where there is a crossing, if we are sensible.
