Please can I have a handhold and some advise - DP in hospital with failing kidney

DP was admitted to hospital Monday afternoon with a blocked kidney and a tumour discovered.
We have been asking GP for an appointment for the last month to no avail, despite enlisting all symptoms including pain in pelvis and groin and swollen leg/ankle, he kept saying it must be a muscle injury and have some rest.
The swelling was getting worse so he had a private scan which showed blockage in left kidney/ureter, accumulation of fluid and kidney function heavily affected.
The radiologist advises us to call GP immediately and rush to A&E which we did - this was last Thursday. A&E refused to even look at the private scan or do their own, they did a blood test and sent us home.
We called GP on Friday who said he cannot get through to the hospital.
We were back in A&E on Friday night after pain started - they did the same blood test which also showed reduced kidney function and said there is nothing they can do over weekend.
Finally spoke to GP on Monday after much chasing which told us to go to hospital.
DP was admitted on Monday afternoon and has been in hospital since - he slept on a chair on Monday night as they said there are no beds, despite the fact that when he was finally given a bed yesterday morning in an empty ward - the nurse said there was no one in that ward over the previous night.
Since then he has seen 3 different doctors for a total of about 6 minutes. The last one was this morning who simply told him he will probably lose his kidney as the blockage is a tumour, and then told him he is very busy and left.
He was told on Monday he will have a procedure to remove fluid yesterday, yesterday was told too busy so will be today, today was told no one available so tomorrow.
He has had some tests - urine, blood and scans. Not one doctor or nurse bothered to tell him the results of any of these tests. In the meantime the pain and swelling are increasing, and he is getting more and more anxious and distressed.
He is now convinced he will lose his kidney and he has cancer and worried sick it has spread as well.
I am not able to visit but I have called the ward and begged for a doctor to come and speak to him, even if for 5 minutes. I was told there is no one available.
I have been trying to call PALS all day - no one is answering.
We are going out of our minds - him, me and DC as well. Please, please can someone tell me what to do.
He is literally being left to die. I cannot believe this is happening.

The only thing i can say to reassure you is living with 1 kidney is perfectly ok and will be ok, as long as its nothing else more serious than having the kidney removed.

sorry for what you are going through :( I’m sure someone more knowledgable will come along to give you advice. Didn’t want to read and run. Sending you hugs...

I'm so sorry, OP, this must be incredibly worrying and difficult for all of you. Unfortunately, the NHS is spread really thinly at the moment- odds are the doctors he has spoken to are upset by the situation too but their hands are tied. I don't know what to suggest, but am holding you all in my thoughts. Flowers

It is shit at the moment, we've had a very similar experience to yours but ours is a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Have you tried emailing PALS as well as calling? I had a lot of support from the British Liver Foundation when DP turned yellow and no-one was helping us (he was sent away from A&E too), maybe get in touch with Kidney Care UK. Good luck to you both, it is a shit time to have a loved one seriously ill.

Contiblue · 22/07/2020 23:27

@bloodywhitecat I'm so sorry you're going through this as well. It is horrific. Thank you for your suggestion of Kidney Care - I did not think of that. I will call them tomorrow.

My mum had a large tumour on her kidney, stage 2, caused by an aggressive form of cancer. She had the kidney and the tumour removed, and the surgeons were very sure there was no spread visible, so didn’t pursue Chemotherapy. She’s been monitored ever since and has so far had no recurrence 8 years later. She lives very happily with one kidney, just has regular blood tests to check its function. Treatments are very good now, and we had brilliant family support from the Macmillan nurse at the hospital. Please try not to panic.

I am so sorry that you’re going through this. Waiting for test results is extremely hard as is not being able to be with your dh during this time. I hope he drs are able to give you some words of encouragement soon & a plan of action. Flowers

You poor thing, sounds like it has been awful. To echo what others have said, living with one kidney is fine - I was born with only one functional one and didn’t even find out until I was 30, and I run ultramarathons for fun....

HeyBlaby · 23/07/2020 00:39

I have emailed PALS before and got a fairly swift response, obviously not as quick as if they answered the phone unfortunately.

Could also be worth calling and speaking to/asking for a call back from the ward manager.

Sorry you are going through this.

olympicsrock · 23/07/2020 11:16

So Sorry to hear this is happening . I’m a hospital doctor and do think his care sounds poor so far. I would email PALS. I recently advised a patient to do this when my hands were tied. There were immediate results ( 30 mins later)as PALS contacted management and the consultant immediately who made things happen.
