Would you find this demotivating or not...

Was having a discussion with friend about her workplace. They are all very junior management grade on their team, with a handful of slightly more senior management overseeing the team. One of the more senior managers keeps contacting a young woman on the team about applying for a more senior position. Even on her days off she will get a text from him saying 'x jobs have come out now'. He doesn't appear to do this with the rest of the team and give them 'heads up' like this.

My friend says she finds this really demotivating as it's like he is picking favourites and it makes her feel unnoticed. I argued that it would motivate me more to try even harder to stand out.

Not really an AIBU as such, but just wondered what stance you would take on this.

My comment wont go down well on here but I think people always have favourites and click better with others. Obviously that sucks for some people but it cant really be helped.

I've had jobs where I've been a favourite and yes in honesty it makes it more fun and motivated me. I've also had jobs where I haven't been a favourite but I guess that partly motivated me to as I'd have a "fuck off I'll show you I dont need friends to do well" attitude

@Redraptor Your comment makes complete sence.

I guess my workplace is very neutral, we all muddle along together so it's easy for me to say I would work harder. When in the position of not being the 'favourite' I can imagine it does make some people less willing to try. It seems very counterproductive of management though?

Maybe he isn't picking favorites but picking someone who would be suitable for the role.

I doubt all of them would be suitable for the more snr role and therefore he has obviously chosen the person he feels best fits the role
