AIBU to not pay?

Listed a job yesterday on a well known selling website asking for quotes for some decking laid in my garden.

Lots of interest and one of those were from a person claiming he was doing a job in my local area and could come round the following evening to have a look. He said he could supply the joists and quoted me £300 (hadnt had anyone come out to physically quote me so was unsure on what was reasonable) I asked if that was an all in price to which he replied and said ‘yes mate would require something now so I can get the joists and be with you afternoon’
I messaged back asking if that was in addition to the £300 and that i didnt need him to get anything just yet as I obviously hadnt confirmed the job and wanted to get other quotes first
‘ the joist are about 70 then are get some fixings ok to call it 100 and pay rest when completed send me full address heres my details’ this was his response at 10.23 he then sends me his bank details and by 10.58 he is messaging me to say he has bought the materials and to send over my address and his money.
Needless to say I did neither as I had already advised him that no materials were required yet as I had other quotes to get. He then proceeds to bombard me with messages threatening to come to my house (granted he did not have full address but the selling site automatically gives a pretty clear indication of where you are when you list a job and theres only 3 houses on my road so wouldnt be hard for him!) and that ive messed him about and I owe him the money. Ive checked his selling profile, all negative reviews saying he is a scammer, always wanting money transferred or deposits paid for things he is selling, no indication on there that he has any landscaping experience
AIBU to not pay?

Don’t pay him a bloody penny and let him know if he continues to harass you you will involve the police.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 22/07/2020 08:34

Reply and tell him that if he continues to harass you you’ll report him to the police.

Absolutely do not pay him

Caselgarcia · 22/07/2020 08:34

Of course not, no contract/agreement was in place!

FatherBrownsBicycle · 22/07/2020 08:36

If you are concerned he is going to turn up log it with 101

Yep, definitely a chancer

Alexandernevermind · 22/07/2020 08:39

Don't pay him. Go to he police if he gets threatening. Never post jobs like this on selling pages, always go to a reputable, insured local company. It will be more expensive but you will get a quality job that will be safe and last for years.

honeygirlz · 22/07/2020 08:39

YANBU but why on Earth didn’t you check his profile before replying to his message?

Anyway, regardless of that, you don’t the twat a penny and I would complain to the website about him as the next person he targets could be vulnerable. Cynical me thinks he picked on you because you’re a woman.

Di11y · 22/07/2020 08:43

Tell the site you found him on too. what a scammer

Dhewg · 22/07/2020 08:49

Tell him to get to fuck. Don't pay a penny. Send him a message saying you will not be paying, and any more contact you'll report to the police.

I'm getting quotes for decking at the moment too, although not having much luck as they either haven't turned up, or have come out and then not sent a quote!

mum2b2017 · 22/07/2020 08:58

i have blocked him on the site now so he is no longer able to contact me but still a bit worried about the address thing.
I had spoken to 2 local companies, 1 said the job was too small to be of interest to them and the other didnt turn up! Same story with mybuilder.com, all 5 tradesmen i had invited to come and quote declined. It is a small area so think they would rather get the big jobs then waste time on a 2x4 metre decking job!

YABU to even ask the question. Of course you shouldn't give him any money!

flooredbored · 22/07/2020 09:02

Definitely don’t pay. As an aside have you contacted builders or gardeners? I would have thought it would be more of a landscape gardener job.

Lindy2 · 22/07/2020 09:04

He's a scammer. Block him and report him to the admin of the selling group.

For a small job like that you might be better off advertising for recommendations for a reputable handyman rather than a builder.
