I have lots of friends on social media who try to sell stuff, eg tropic skincare and body shop, but I’ve noticed my 2 younique fb friends post all the time and have sent me message asking me to post their posts etc (which I haven’t done).

Anyway my lovely and usually sensible friend has now announced she is a younique presenter and I am worried about her. She has invested a lot of money already and seems to mostly be buying stuff herself. I have another friend who sells tropic who buys £200 a month of stuff off herself so I know this is common, but this particular friend doesn’t have any experience with makeup and doesn’t have much money. She’s changed completely and talks about younique all the bloody time. I’ve watched some anti mlm videos and read a good blog about younique and I’m genuinely worried about her. The company seems morally questionable with their charity work with vulnerable women apparently used to recruit new younique presenters. How can I help her? She’s investing money and time into this that she hasn’t got and every single time I speak to her she now tries to sell me something Sad

Another younique friend on Facebook put something on this week about how hurtful it is that people don’t support their friends and family’s local businesses.

Post a comment on Facebook about how you think it is so sad how MLM's ruin lives, with a nice big "inspirational quote photo".. u know the style.. they will soon STFU with their guilt trips...

myusernamewastakenbyme · 23/07/2020 15:48

Several bots have been posting this shite recently.

Aibu to ask you to talk to me about younique!
Fruityb · 23/07/2020 18:01

Oh those “shop local” “buy from your friend’s business”. It isn’t a business. You have a catalogue and a website that ANYONE could do. You have nothing.

I was binned by my oldest friend because of bloody Younique (Marcie I think the name was on Elle’s blog: that’s me) and I hate them so much. My friend literally cut me off because I dared to criticise. And I did buy stuff from her - including the anniversary eyeshadow palette which was soot in disguise - but I wasn’t impressed at all. I returned that and I know full well she will have lost that money as she won’t have sent it back.

She’s now a hairdresser and as far as I can tell not a rep anymore. I will add she’s made party bags, jewellery, experimented with a sewing machine, started and quite an open university psychology degree and god knows what else. She now calls herself an “industry professional” despite starting hairdresser training two years ago. She was a beauty ambassador, the make up ninja and various other aliases before this.

But I digress. It destroys friendships and just leaves a bitter taste. The products are ridiculously overpriced and if they’re so amazing why aren’t they in stores?! The packaging is horribly cheap as well.

God, I hate it when I walk into a Yankee Candle.

katedan · 23/07/2020 18:09

Oh I feel so sad to find this post, I have a friend who is very vulnerable, she is wealthy but lots of MH problems and has been so enthused by this company it really seemed this was the incentive she needed to help her. She would be very easy to con as she was looking for something to make her happy.

JillGoodacre · 23/07/2020 18:22

I've just bought some Tropic skincare and I'm impressed so far. Not sure how it works in relation to other MLMs. From experience with younique "presenters" they seem a bit "drink the kool-aid" to me. Capitalizing on people's abuse and running a business from it is abhorrent to me.

anon444877 · 23/07/2020 18:37

It’s sad really there are so few decent part time jobs for women. Friend has done younique, she gave up after a few months, didn’t make much.

MiniMum97 · 23/07/2020 20:11

I don't know about other MLMs but I buy a lot of Tropic skincare and it's amazing. I have very sensitive skin and have tried loads of stuff in the past and it's the best products I've ever used. It's all vegan (not that I am vegan but if that floats your boat) and no nasty ingredients.

Tbh it probably sells itself. I know three people who sell. Two do very well out if it. The third doesn't really make much effort so not sure how much she makes if anything.

Tropic purport to be ethical and give a proportion of profits to charity. I've fed back to them that their ethos doesn't really fit with the MLM marketing but didn't get a response. Tbf it was in a survey so they probably didn't respond individually to that.

You can also avoid the MLM and buy online.

I get the impression that most MLM products are shit. I can assure you Tropic products aren't.

I promise I don't sell them. Just spend a lot of money on them!

Norma27 · 23/07/2020 20:37

Tropic chose to go down the predatory MLM route.
Therefore they are as bad as all the rest and i will never give them a penny of my money.

acatcalledjohn · 23/07/2020 22:26

Tropic purport to be ethical

Purport is the right word alright Grin

The business model is inherently unethical, no matter how ethical the product they sell.

Starbuggy · 23/07/2020 22:38

You’re still supporting a MLM company even if you buy direct though. And you’re supporting them on here by saying how good their products are.

If you don’t support MLMs then don’t buy their products and don’t give them good reviews online. It’s your choice what company you give your money to, but buying direct rather than through reps doesn’t make it an ethical choice

FilthyforFirth · 23/07/2020 22:56

Noooooo is Yankee candle MLM? I buy those all the time. From shops I mean.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 23/07/2020 23:06

I don't think Yankee use the MLM model. It's Scentsy that does those.

I also wouldn't buy Tropic on principle - nothing the least bit ethical about a MLM model.

Sharww · 24/07/2020 01:37

I know three people who sell. Two do very well out if it.

No, they don’t @MiniMum97 lol. Not unless you’ve seen their financial statements.

You know all that ‘soo thankful to Tropic for paying for this holiday! This handbag! For enabling me to stay home with my baby and not miss a minute’ is a bald faced lie, right?

GilderoyLockdown · 24/07/2020 07:12

Yes, the whole idea is they make out they're doing really well to try and attract more people.

Fruityb · 24/07/2020 07:31

No other “job” does that. I don’t think my workplace for allowing me to pay my mortgage or my latest purchase. It’s a little undignified to go on about your wages or what you get paid. I dislike it intensely.

Fruityb · 24/07/2020 07:31

Thank

Enderman · 24/07/2020 08:00

I know someone who’s a Scentsy ‘consultant’ and someone else who does Younique.

I can’t work out why I would spend £23 on a clumpy mascara which I have to order and wait for, than just go to Boots and buy one for a third of the price?

If you’ve ever seen one of those ‘share your business’ posts on fb, it’s all MLM bots.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 24/07/2020 08:04

I have a Scentsy bot....Body Shop....Yooooooooooooooonique.....Usborne Books and Partylite all on my fb.....ohh and constant posts about some Travel Agent scam...really fed up with them....they should be banned from posting on fb.

FredaFox · 24/07/2020 08:25

A girl at work has just started body shop, suddenly miss avoid social media is following or requesting us all on social media. It’s amusing as she is always tight with money so to know she’s probably spent 100 to get going is so out of character
No one will buy from her and we are grateful not to be back in the office yet as it will no doubt be awkward but none of the girls I’m friendly with are prepared to buy it
Her posts on insta are using though

FredaFox · 24/07/2020 08:25

Also being an ex travel agent the travel agent ones really annoy me

Sharkerr · 24/07/2020 12:16

I can’t work out why I would spend £23 on a clumpy mascara which I have to order and wait for, than just go to Boots and buy one for a third of the price?

Cos you’re supporting a friend’s business, and able to reap the benefit of having your very own younique presenter to show you how it works and give makeup tutorials /s

Enderman · 24/07/2020 13:22

I didn’t know I needed someone to teach me how to apply mascara. Who knew?

Sharkerr · 24/07/2020 13:25

You need guidance to get that really intense spider lashes look! Not just any old so and so can manage it, takes a good eight or nine coats!

Pitterpatterpotter · 24/07/2020 13:31

My friend has sent me a message about the great charity work younique do for abused women. I saw an anti mlm YouTube video which implied that the women they helped all went away to a pamper retreat to be recruited because they are vulnerable and this was essentially what the charity does - is this true? Is it a proper charity?
