Am I being unreasonable to expect mothercare to have somewhere I can feed my baby

Hi - I shoped in Mothercare world Weybridge the other week and needed to feed my baby. Im not too fussed about BFeeding in public at the end of the day if my baby needs feeding it needs feeding so I asked the assistant where I could feed my baby. I was astonished that they didnt have anywhere except the toilet!. I got a reply to my complaint today saying that because its an old store they dont have this facility.... am I the only one who thinks this is an unacceptable excuse, especially as they have just found space to put the early learning centre products in their store!! I cannot believe a mothercare store has no where to feed your baby!

Am I wrong in being annoyed by this ?

YANBU. They could have offered you a chair surely (you could have test driven the glider chair .

IIRC John Lewis tend to offer decent feeding facilities.

Perhaps this feed your baby in the loo idea is Mothercare's way of preventing couples from going in to have a shag .

Flibbertyjibbet · 30/09/2007 22:06

Our mothercare world feeding place has certificates on the wall proclaiming it to be the best feeding area there is.
Me, I nip in and change baby/go to loo then have been known to feed in my car on the car park as the smell from the nappy bin and also on one occasion the stink that someone had done in one of the toilets.....urgh.
Most of the Boots mum and baby rooms are also in the toilets. One huge out of town boots near me has positioned the chairs for feeding in the loos -immediately inside facing the door so you get all these people coming in to use the loo and half of them are the 'omg there's a woman feeding her baby in front of me how disgusting' types from their faces. So might as well feed in the middle of the shops as you get less reaction.

Elasticwoman · 30/09/2007 22:12

If you find it convenient to feed in the car, Flibbety, then fine, but if you would rather feed in the shop, why don't you just sit down some where and do it? And just say no thanks if some one offers you the loo as a feeding area?

Flibbertyjibbet · 30/09/2007 22:16

I don't find it convenient to feed in the car, I just can't stand the STINK of the so called feeding area which is really a toilet.
I did not say I would rather feed in the shop, I said one might as well feed in a shop as you get just as many disapproving looks when bfing in a toilet that everyone -mother or not - can use.
If I feed my baby I want peace and quiet as they both fussed a lot, can't get that in the middle of a shop and don't feel very peaceful inhaling the stink of other peoples nappies or adult poo wiffs.

Elasticwoman · 30/09/2007 22:23

See your point, Flibberty. Clearly Mothercare do not provide peace and quiet.
I needed an enclosed space with dd2 because dd1 would run off and get lost if I fed in public.

Well, sounds like a good reason not to shop at Mothercare. Do you think they are lurking on this thread?

Flibbertyjibbet · 30/09/2007 22:25

I am convinced mothercare only stay in business because every pregnant person goes browsing there when pg, then gets a stack of mothercare vouchers when they finish work for mat leave and needs somewhere to spend them!
Cos the clothes are not great for the price, and all the equipment can be got more cheaply elsewhere.

I can't believe they described the Weybridge branch as an "old store". Is that building more than 10 years old .....?!

And how old does a building have to be before it is difficult to provide a couple of comfy chairs in a quiet corner??

I had the same experience in the same shop when DD1 was born (she needed peace and quiet and I liked feeding rooms then). I try not to go there any more.

lewy · 30/09/2007 22:50

Hi ya

THanks for all your views, in response to why didnt I just sit in the store and breast feed, well I was prepared to do that but thought to ask if they had a designated area. I forgot to say in my original post (cant believe I forgot to add this in)about the reply I got... wait for it .. you wont believe this one... the woman said that she didnt feel it was appropriate for to me to feed in the shop as there were many men about in the store!!! I replied that I couldnt believe she had just said that and then she spent the next 10 minutes back pedaling saying that she meant that I might feel uncomfortable!!

And for those questioning is it the brooklands store the answer is yes, therefore I do not consider this to be a small store or that old!

I have replied back to their letter so watch this space.....

YANBU. It is rubbish about it being an old cstore so they don't have that facility. My eldest DD is 2o and our local Mothercare had feeding facilities then. It is not only mothercare that provide these facilities I know that most boots do and also quite a few other shops.
