Dh took frozen chicken out of the freezer to defrost last night. He left it on the side to defrost and has only just now put it in the fridge. It's been out of the frezer almost 24 hours!!

AIBU to have chucked it out? He also had the cheek to say I should have reminded him to put it in the fridge Hmm...

I would not eat that. Would you?

how has it been 24 hours if he took it out last night? We defrost on the worktop too and as long as its cooked thoroughly it'll be fine

Did it still feel chilled? If it was back to room temperature I probably wouldn’t.

I would smell it and if it smelled fine then I’d still eat it - assuming it was then cooked properly. You’re supposed to bring meat to room temperature before you cook it anyway.

It’s basic food hygiene that you never defrost meat at room temperature. You always defrost in the refrigerator or if you don’t have one, in cold water.

If he took it out last night it's not been out 24 hours.

It would have been defrosting for several hours and won't be rotten from having sat out until lunchtime. If it looks alright and smells alright then it's fine.

Yes, of course, can't stand unnecessary waste of food.

What time dimension are you in that it's almost 24 hours since last night?

Honestly, I know it's too late now but what harm was going to come to you if you'd cooked it properly?

You lot are risking serious illness defrosting chicken on a counter.

“Thawing chicken on the counter is not safe. Part of that cavalier attitude stems from a mistaken belief that, since the chicken will be cooked afterwards, it will be food safe by the time it reaches your table. That widely held opinion is inaccurate, sometimes tragically so.
Cooking to a food safe temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, as recommended by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, doesn't kill all of the bacteria. It does reduce their numbers sharply, but the higher the bacteria population before cooking, the more that remain after cooking.
More important, some bacteria associated with chicken — including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli — produce heat-stable toxins that can make you seriously ill, even after the bacteria are killed.”

I've always defrosted chicken on the worktop and regularly cook full chickens from frozen, I'm 46 now and have never had food poisoning or serious illness. As long as it smells fine and is cooked right through then it'll be fine

Just because you’ve been lucky, doesn’t mean you’re not taking a risk or doing something unsafe. The argument that “it never did me any harm” doesn’t = safe.

even nhs has defrosting guidelines at room temperature for turkeys at Christmas so can't be that unsafe. It takes days to defrost anything in our fridge so most things defrost at room temperature. I try to stick them in the fridge once defrosted but sometimes forget

Meat should be defrosted in a fridge fullstop (NEVER in cold water or on a counter). Binning it was the best thing to do.

Smelling food makes no difference and will give you no indication of if food is ok to use. Some types of food poisoning bacteria release no smell at all.

The lack of food hygiene on this site astounds me sometimes. Shocking.

I wouldn’t think US food advice is helpful, they have very different poultry hygiene standards and a much higher rate of food poisoning.

I would but I’d use a meat thermometer, and possibly use it in more of a pot roast/jointed recipe with a lid on.

Only you know how comfortable you feel though, and who’s going to eat it!

I have been defrosting meat at room temperature for years and years, and we have never had food poisoning or any illness as a result.

What’s also shocking is that 4.5 million tonnes of perfectly edible food is thrown away in the U.K. every year. With regards food hygiene, there’s sensible and there’s hysterical.

The other consideration is your fridge needs to be under 5 degrees to be safe, and regularly cleaned. The Food Standards Agency website is very helpful.

Cooking it until piping hot is a myth. That's not going to matter if the meat was out at room temperature for over 90 mind once defrosted. That's when bacteria starts to grow. I'd have binnediy as well op.
