I've been bitten by something. Didn't feel it at the time, yesterday I think. We were camping. But now it it is hard, warm, and slightly tingly. Any thoughts?

A horse fly bite?

Lockheart · 20/07/2020 19:13

Try Google?

SuperMumTum · 20/07/2020 19:14

I've tried google. Sorry for BU by using AIBU for this.

From bitter experience, that looks like a horsefly bite as PP suggested.

If there's a part of me that's accessible when I go out in a kayak of an evening, there'll be a horsefly homing in to chomp down and leave me bleeding.

Nasty photographs of extreme reaction warning for the following:

I've sometimes been pretty unwell after the bites.

Just a suggestion.

I tend to react badly to bites too. I don't think it matters exactly what bit you, it won't change the treatment. You'll never know from looking at the bite- horsefly, midge, mosquito... could be anything.

Looks like a horsefly bite. Try applying heat as it denatures the protein. It works for me. I just usually hold my mug of hot tea against the bite a few times and it’s so much better.

SuperMumTum · 20/07/2020 19:40

Thanks all. I was slightly panicky that it was lymes disease. I do react badly to bites so might take some antihistamine as well. Thanks again.

I agree with the horse fly, actualy realy quite a nasty bite from those and I always get a reaction like this if the one in my garden gets me when I'm doing the lawn

MitziK · 20/07/2020 19:48

It would be worth going to a chemist and getting some antihistamine or anti itch cream, along with cleaning it regularly with sterile hot saline, as you've taken the top off it. A reusable gel pack you can put into the freezer would also be handy.

They itch like a bastard and you don't want it to get infected from scratching it.

But yes, I agree with everybody else, it's a bastarding arsehole horsefly bite.

DazedandConcerned · 20/07/2020 19:51

When the DH gets bit on a hike by those nasty buggers he finds witch hazel gel helps.

Might be worth a try if nothing else soothes it.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 20/07/2020 19:58

Ooh, horsefly bites are awful, looks like a nasty one. Try bathing it in some warm salty water for a bit of relief.

I was wondering the same about mine. Incredibly painful to walk, now elevated and taking antihistamines and painkillers (phone call to practice nurse this afternoon).

LakieLady · 20/07/2020 20:08

Yep, horseflies. I had a bastard horsefly bite on the back of my calf a few years ago and it hurt like buggery. It left a perfectly circular bruise that took ages to go.

I hate the fuckers.

Roystonv · 20/07/2020 20:12

I use 1% hydrocortisone with antihistamines. I react to everything. Could bruise, take ages to fade and be itchy for far longer than you think. Leave it alone as best you can and clean gently.
