Dc break up this week. They went back for a month.

I think their teachers and teaching assistants are wonderful and I really do appreciate all the hard work they do.

But aibu to not buy end of term gifts this year?

Dc aren’t even in with their usual teachers as all in bubbles which will make it more difficult. Plus with both classes it will be 6 + presents. Which is quite a lot of money for us at the minute..

Also, they haven’t allowed the children to take anything in. Not even a drinks bottle or lunch box so not sure they even want gifts being brought into school?

I am getting to get the children to write some cards. Is this enough?

Aibu?

YABU - buy gifts

YANBU - they don’t expect it

After this year I can promise you that not one teacher will give a single shiny shit! Your support during the last 4 months means more than a bottle of wine!

psychomath · 20/07/2020 17:23

You don't have to buy gifts any year - cards from the children are always the nicest things to receive anyway.

Barbie222 · 20/07/2020 17:24

Absolutely fine. A card would be lovely!

Popsie17 · 20/07/2020 17:25

Thanks all. I have bought DS cards to write for them. He’s not really interested in arts and crafts but me and Dd will be making home made cards this evening!

We've sent an email to the headteacher saying thanks for all their work, DS is doing a card which we'll take a picture of and email in, and I've offered to make a contribution to some school funds so they can get something for the pupils for next year.

Our Headteacher sent an email to parents asking them to not send in gifts etc... as this is passing on items which the school have actively discouraged , hence, our school didn’t send any work books home and end of year reports were sent rather than handed over.

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/07/2020 17:38

I'd be happy if the practice of gift giving to teachers ceased entirely. A nice card - fine (in the present circumstances, an email to school to be passed on).

I speak as a retired teacher. Save your money and just express your thanks if you feel so moved.

BlueJava · 20/07/2020 17:39

We have never done gifts for teachers, only special homemade cards if a teacher/assistant was particularly lovely and helpful in the year.

lifesalongsong · 20/07/2020 17:40

You don't have to give gifts in any year, how would it be ureasonable?

Rainbowsparkle · 20/07/2020 17:40

My daughters class teacher was shielding so will bring something in September. After home schooling whilst still working full time ( key worker) I truly appreciate teachers all the more!

carmystery · 20/07/2020 17:41

Teachers don't care about gifts.

If you appreciate them, send an email and copy in the head.

We have just completed the term from hell. I know people have mixed experiences of their schools and the support received but I can honestly say I’ve never been so stressed.

Parents really have appreciated our hard work and I know that because we’ve had such lovely supportive emails from them, usually direct to the head. I can honestly say that these words of appreciation and thanks mean far more than any gift.

So if you think they’ve done a good job, why not email? It will be greatly appreciated.

MsTSwift · 20/07/2020 17:53

Our primary teachers vanished mid March never to be seen again replaced by work sheets from the school secretary. No response to emails either so no I won’t be falling over myself this year on the present front 🙄

sarahC40 · 20/07/2020 18:03

Send them a nice message showing your feelings of appreciation - secondary teacher so I don’t normally get presents anyway, but a heartfelt message really buoys the spirits.

Hiddennameforever · 20/07/2020 18:06

I did not buy anything.
My child did not go back since March and her report was really bad though she worked really hard.
Also the school had a cheek to actually ask for a gifts last week, saying gifts are very welcome and if they can be in a form of a gift voucher even better!

Scarby9 · 20/07/2020 18:18

Email, note or card. Even just a said thank you, if you see the member of staff. All anyone really wants, in any job, I suspect.

Ballybeyondthepail · 20/07/2020 18:29

Our teachers basically went AWOL from March - they have my good will and I hope they enjoyed their time at home but I won’t be getting them anything g at all.

whereistherum · 20/07/2020 18:32

DS did a card and as his teacher is leaving, I wrote a nice email to the head, which will go into her file. Apparently this is better than gifts, but to be fair to her, she has been amazing with us and I swear she thought she was teaching both of us. She was
