People 'reserving' delivery slots

turquoise50 · 20/07/2020 14:29

I've recently discovered that apparently lots of people are 'reserving' supermarket delivery slots by just putting a bottle or two of booze which they don't really want into their trolley to take it over £40, and leaving it there for weeks! Then when they're ready to order their actual shopping they edit it and take it out.

Thus just strikes me as dishonest and really very selfish when everyone knows that delivery slots are still in very high demand. I tried to book on Saturday and the earliest slot I could get was Monday 27th. Last week there was a two-week wait and I had to order from my second-choice supermarket instead, where the wait was only a week.

I presume people are doing it the minute their order is delivered, to hold their regular spot for next time. Whereas I tend to be more reactive in my shopping habits, besides keeping a rolling list in my notes.

I feel a bit shocked, but at the same time realise that if I (pre-lockdown) would, say, order on a Thursday for delivery on a Sunday, because that happens to be my preferred day, it's effectively the same thing. But there wasn't a shortage of slots then, going to the shops was no big deal, and I was ordering stuff I actually wanted.

YANBU - it's selfish and sneaky and people shouldn't hog slots; in fact the shops should crack down on it by making it so that slots can only be held for up to a week, and/or make the trolley limit a minimum number of items, not a minimum amount of money. (I know some shops did this for a while but not sure if still continuing.)

YABU - it's really no different from ordering your full shop a few days in advance and editing it several times before delivery as you run out of different things.

(As a side question - when these people forget to update their order and 'accidentally' get a delivery of nothing but a £40 bottle of whisky that they don't even like, should I feel a certain amount of schadenfreude, or be even more annoyed by the totally wasted delivery slot? Or a bit of both? Grin)

It’s not exactly selfish, but it’s a daft system. It feels a bit like reserving sun lounger with your towel...

Viviennemary · 21/07/2020 21:53

People hogging all the slots will be the same folk calling people selfish for voting Tory.

Starshollowwannabe · 21/07/2020 21:58

Always do this. I need the delivery slot so am willing to book it weeks in advance if I need to. Just because you prefer last minute shopping doesn’t make people who don’t wrong.

wildchild554 · 21/07/2020 22:01

that should have said wouldn't want them to worry about, oops

before covid 19 slots where more available on Morrisons , I don't drive and got bad back, asthma and also sole carer to asd child . . my gran got dementia is not able to use online shopping so buy stuff along side mine . Morrisons told people to book in advance in which I tried to do only to find no slots available .
two months I been without online shop during lockdown , can't get anyone on the phone . it was horrible, I was in pain with back ache , tight chested with child having meltdowns while standing in long ques outside the supermarket to only to find empty shelfs . I was trying to hold back my tears on the way back home . there was food boxes I was able to send to my gran but could not get it myself as I got child with limited liking of food which food boxes had nothing my child would eat . I could only carry few days worth of food at the time .
I have been with Morrisons many years and used online shop and found them to be good , but during lockdown it was awful I had to go in in que online just look at food and not able to order . app still not working and I only get two shops in a month and the website still crashes . I don't think it other people its how its been managed its the issue . I have known disable people who lived by themselves and use online shopping as they not able to go the shop they end up starving as they did not have any one to shop for them .

How is it a daft system?

I know I will need shopping next week. So I’ve booked the slot I need at the time I need.

Editing your basket is simply the online equivalent of sticking milk on your list last minute because someone finished it or you remembered you needed it.

Divoc2020 · 21/07/2020 22:05

This thread really has revealed the bizarre way some people think!

If you know you are going to need a service in a week, month or year's time you book it in advance. This is how the whole world of hairdressers, dentists, driving tests, window cleaners etc works.

There's nothing selfish about being organised - it's just one of life's basic executive functioning skills!

With Sainsbury's having people book in advance is an advantage as it allows you to book a 'green delivery' i.e. one where the delivery van is already in your area, so minimising extra travel. This is far more efficient than having everyone book 1-2 days before and sending vans all over the place!

Coronabegone · 21/07/2020 22:06

@grifffendor the Morrisons app is back this week, also loads more slots available. I didn't get slots during lockdown as it was then for shielding, elderly etc. But now it's fine.

cece · 21/07/2020 22:10

I have been doing this for years. I had no idea I was being selfish by booking my regular slot by putting a bottle of vodka in it and then amending the order the day before. Who knew?! I thought everyone did it! How do you know what you need a week in advance?

howaboutchocolate · 21/07/2020 22:19

Nobody tell the OP about restaurant bookings. People book tables weeks or months in advance and they don't even have the decency to put their food order in until they arrive at the restaurant. Selfish fuckers.

unicorncow · 21/07/2020 22:23

I've done this for years. I never know what we are going to be short of so I reserve it with £40 of whatever I can think of at the time. It's bit me in the bum a few times when I've forgotten to amend it and ended up with 8 packs of mince and 12 bottles of coke or 8 multi packs of loo roll (pre COVID!) I've now got a recurring slot so I don't need to do it now

netflixismysidehustle · 21/07/2020 22:25

If there's lots of extra slots available in some areas it means that people aren't hogging all the slots.
Only shielded people can see all the slots, "normal" people only see the leftovers.

LolaSmiles · 21/07/2020 22:25

howaboutchocolate
Or concert bookings. I've heard some people selfishly book tickets months before the gig which prevents others who decide they want to go the week before from getting tickets.

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/07/2020 22:26

My mum books a whole years worth of hairdresser appointments in advance... every 6 weeks.
Selfish fucker.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 21/07/2020 22:27

@H007

At the moment it’s selfish. If you are not over 70 or in a vulnerable group you should be taking your bottom to the supermarket and getting your own shopping so that home delivery and click and collect is freely available to those that need it.
Im neither shielding nor over 70. I will continue to use my morrisons delivery pass that I pay for. I could "get my bottom" to the nearest supermarket, but I'm likely to either have such a bad panic attack that I pass out, or my dodgy hip will play up at some point during the 45 min walk there. If that doesn't happen I could manage to carry maybe 2 days worth of food. Of course ive then got the same risk of panic attack/hip issue on the walk home. Provided I manage that I'll have to go back 2 days later for more food, and surely all those trips out wouldn't be sensible. So I get 1 massive shop per month and top up bread and milk from the overpriced corner shop if I have to. If that makes me selfish then so be it
Glitteryone · 21/07/2020 22:32

Most bizarre thread ever

Oh well, H007 has said it so that must be right then. Even if you pay for shopping delivery in advance or have used the service for years because to do so fits in with your lifestyle. I’d forgotten that no one is allowed ever now to do anything that might be even vaguely beneficial to them or they are “selfish”. People must always now consider whether someone old or shielding needs a shopping slot before using the slot they’ve had for and paid for for years. Never mind if you’re a single parent of toddlers and don’t have a car, off you trudge to the shop. How dare you seek a little convenience in your life!

gingerbiscuits · 21/07/2020 22:36

Seriously?? Everyone does this - it's standard practice!!

talkingkrustydoll · 21/07/2020 22:37

I've always done this. I don't even drink but add two bottles of vodka weeks before then change them on the week they are due when I know what we need.

Mumgonenuts2020 · 21/07/2020 22:39

We were the same at the beginning with two it to three week delivery slots, the app is under construction at the moment the Website has been fine, I just take the most suitable slot, each week, editing is normal, controlling how much money you spend, this is a whole shop including toiletries laundry and food, especially with two Children at home all day over the last 18 weeks!!

MrsBadcrumble123 · 21/07/2020 22:52

I do this! I book my normal weekly slot when it becomes available! Stop clutching your pearls and go about your day Hmm

MiddlesexGirl · 21/07/2020 22:54

OP - is it OK that I prefill my basket with an earlier order? Because about 70% of that order will carry forward.

Then the night before I sort out my menus for the week, look at stock levels and get any requests from dp & dc. None of these could be done much earlier.

Justkeeepsmiling · 21/07/2020 23:02

How did I not know this was a thing?! How does it work? Does the supermarket not take payment till the day of delivery? I feel like I've been missing out all this time.
