To think it's not normal

Since having my son 3 years ago my periods have been horrendous. I feel like I have flu and get migraines for 2 days before them can't leave the house due to heavy bleeding for 3 or 4 days. Surely it's not normal? It was never like this before.
I'm willing to try anything at this stage. I'm supposed to be starting my PGCE in September 2021, I can't run out of the classroom every 30 minutes.
I can't be any hormonal contraceptives to help unfortunately. Has anyone had any joy with some relief?

What does your GP have to say?

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/07/2020 14:25

The last time I went he offered me the pill which I can't take, then said wait and see if it settles down. I should go back as this was a while ago, and maybe ask for the female doctor

There is a drug called Tranexamic acid that helps with blood clotting and will help with the heavy bleeding. It was a godsend for me.

I've also found triptans the only drugs that worked for my migraine. I'm also now taking a preventer as mine got so bad I was spending 3 or 4 days in bed every 3 weeks.

I kept a record of everything including what tablets I took to give my GP an idea of how much my life was being disrupted.

Hope you manage to get some relief soon.

its not normal and you shouldn't have to put up with it. Go back to gp. I have suffered heavy periods due to fibroid. .but unless they find out what is causing yours how can they treat it? You could ask about tranexamic acid. also ibrofen can help

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/07/2020 14:59

You're both right! I will go back, I'll ring tomorrow morning. Thank you

www.larabriden.com/what-dairy-does-to-periods/
you may find this useful.

also have you thought about periods pants and/or menstrual cups. not everyones cup of tea I know but they can hold a lot and can extend the time you need between toilet visits.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/07/2020 16:10

Thank you. I eat very little dairy anyway but that's interesting to know.
I keep looking at the menstrual cups but I've heard they've caused prolapse in some people. Not sure how true, or common, that is but it kind of terrified me

Oh really? I have not come across that before. I hope you have some not with the gp.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/07/2020 17:13

I'll have to look into it a bit further, thank you

Mefanamic acid is also brilliant for heavy periods. I also get flu like symptoms around periods since giving birth, it's awful. No cure for that I've found I'm afraid, and I'm back on the pill, which has helped with everything else.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/07/2020 18:38

I'll mention that to the GP and see if I can have that. I didn't have periods on the pill, I really wish I could go back on it

if you don't know what causes them you cannot treat them. I would insist on a gyne referral of a scan. Just because we are women, we shouldn't make feel that it is acceptable to put up with it and not getting proper investigations. Fibroid came to my mind too but you need a scan to diagnose.

ardenjones · 20/07/2020 18:48

Could you ask for a blood test to check your iron levels?

Fletchings · 20/07/2020 18:51

arden good point. Whenever I am low on iron, my periods are horrendous. The worse my period is, the more iron I lose and in turn, the worse my periods get. It is like. bad case of catch22. Iron supplements usually help me.

ardenjones · 20/07/2020 19:01

@Fletchings I'm exactly the same. I had my iron levels taken a couple of months ago. It was 5. It's meant to be 30. No wonder I felt shocking.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 21/07/2020 10:21

@Fletchings I can't agree more! I'm sick of women's health issues being explained away and us being expected to just get on with it.

I've had lots of blood tests over the years and my iron is always really high, even during pregnancy. It's unlikely to be that but still a possibility. It's a bit of a nightmare trying to get into the doctor without having to take the kids, which I really don't want to do if it's avoidable at all.
