This was inspired by couch to 5k and I wondered in lockdown where I've seen lots more people doing different exercises I've not seen any wobbly walkers!

Have you?

So I mean like growing up I often saw people kind of arms tucked in - walking very fast but not running so it was still a sport but like a fast walking sport almost a run but not! Wobbly walkers! Not seen any for years.

Here you go, darls -- going for the hip flexor burn, Kath & Kim style!

😂 love it!

Is it more popular in Australia!? Harold Bishop springs to mind !!

I definitely go for a jog not a run ! 5k at a gentle pace . Don’t have any fancy kit. Listening to my banging playlist 😄🙌 Jogger & proud!

Jennifer Aniston made power walking famous in the early 2000s. I remember my dad doing it Grin

rc22 · 20/07/2020 09:35

@TweeterandtheMonkeyman Yes. I was going to say that Madge and Harold on Neighbours used to do it.

viques · 20/07/2020 09:36

@MrsEricBana

Ah yes, Nordic walking is a thing here too (there's a big group that clacks past me on the common and my neighbour's husband does it too).
Nordic walking is great! I do it with a group, we don't go too fast so we can't talk Grin but it is certainly faster than my normal walking pace, and I walk quite briskly. You can do lots of exercises and challenges to make it tougher - there is a nearby group rumoured to pull car tyres (!) but we just walk.

It's great, you are using your arms and upper body, and what I find good is that even if you are walking on a slope or uneven flat ground you feel supported as I do have a fear of falling over and breaking a hip, or just looking like a stranded orca sprawled on the ground.

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/07/2020 09:36

I run but have stumpy little legs so everyone else calls it jogging, even though I'm going as fast as I reasonably can! I wish I could lengthen my stride, but I'd fall over, especially as there's usually a dog towing me along.

Maybe I should speed walk instead.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/07/2020 09:44

"What I've noticed is that no one goes jogging any more. Everyone goes running instead"

I can assure you that I go jogging. It would be ludicrous to call what I do running.

ThatDamnScientist · 20/07/2020 09:48

You mean like this?

(Link to comedian Laura Clery and her Pamerwalk)

😂😂

MaskingForIt · 20/07/2020 10:01

We used to be on the training circuit for our local race walking club. We called them Wiggle Bummers!

FinallyRelief · 20/07/2020 10:05

@groovergirl has it that's the walking I mean!!

Malcolm in the Middle - Hal power walking
You're welcome!

Ha! I have never seen anyone race-walk in Australia, outside the Commonwealth Games. I live in suburban Melbourne, whence come Neighbours and Kath & Kim. People run, jog, cycle, skate, kick footies, do interval training and circuits, but wobbly walking? Never, apart from schoolkids taking the piss after seeing it on TV!

smallaxe · 20/07/2020 10:37

I saw someone walking backwards along the front at Leasowe a few weeks back. All dressed up in athletics gear and going for it. No idea what that was about.

RedOasis · 20/07/2020 10:43

I see runners going for it like their life depends on it or they’re being chased by a dinosaur but no joggers. There is one lady who does speed walking and the transformation in her size and shape is quite brilliant. So if I could I think I’d go for power walking. Don’t think these arthritic knees could take full in I’ve-got- to-be-faster-than-everyone-else running 🤔

sashh · 20/07/2020 10:53

Didn't race walking used to be an actual thing at the Olympics? Or maybe Commonwealth Games?

Yep, my GP's wife does (or did) it, amongst other things.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/07/2020 11:11

I have a friend who used to run, but had to stop because of a hip problem. She racewalks now. She is phenomenally fast and can walk parkrun much quicker than most of the slowest runners, including me. I suppose I'm a runner, but I wouldn't argue with the jogger label.

Itsarattrap · 20/07/2020 11:12

I’m a wobbly walker 😊

Ha! I have never seen anyone race-walk in Australia,

What? Are you telling us that Neighbours was not an accurate portrayal of Australian life?
That's a shocker.

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2020 17:50

Wasn’t it Nordic walking that Harold did? With sticks.

FinallyRelief · 20/07/2020 19:00

That takes me back Madge and Harold Bishop!

Tell us more, @RedOasis. I've been slobbing out and need some inspiration! Walking really does make a good physique. I used to brisk-walk to and from work (when work was in a city office), with beautiful benefits to my waistline and my mental health.
