I am a member of the WI. Meetings have been held over Zoom since March. I do not attend these meetings and have notified the secretary of my reasons why, namely due to privacy and security in that they do not lockdown meetings and also open up meetings to non-members. I explained that due to privacy and security issues I would not participate in these meetings as Zoom was not a secure platform. This month I had to notify the secretary of a change of address due to moving house. This is information which should be held under gdpr and all details secured. I did so via email and after she enquired about where I moved to ( it's a weird move) I explained. To my utter horror I found out that this information which should have been confidential was relayed in the Zoom meeting and later repeated and elaborated on in WhatsApp. I have expressed my anger and unhappiness at this to the secretary only to be met with the response "it just came up" . After saying that this explanation wasn't acceptable and asking to know who divulged my private information and why, particularly as I'm not in the meetings and there is no need to mention anything about me at all, I am being ignored. This was on Thursday. Would I be unreasonable to take this up with the federation rep on Monday as I have no response to my very legitimate concerns about breaches of confidential information.

OP,
I understand why you are angry about this. Yes, I think you should complain. There seems absolutely no reason to broadcast your address in direct contravention of your wishes.

birthdaybelle · 20/07/2020 06:51

A lot of people who've never had cause to hide their address dont understand how distressing this is. I personally wouldn't make an official complaint but I'd make it clear why this was an issue if nothing else so it doesn't happen to someone new.

If I ever have to give my address out I always remind the person that it is private (DV survivor) so maybe do this in future

Marnie76 · 20/07/2020 06:58

YANBU regarding your address being given out, they should not have done that.
YABU re the zoom meetings. I understand people not wanting children on there unsupervised incase it’s hacked by someone inappropriate etc. but you’re all adults. What on earth are you thinking will happen?

lifesalongsong · 20/07/2020 07:01

Is your house blocked out on Google because of you or was it like that when you moved in?

I didn't know that was a thing but if it's specifically for you they are amazingly on the ball, how do you get that arranged?

I'm interested to find out more about that.

Zoom is fine and I can’t see there having been a GDPR breach there from what you describe. However, the WhatsApp message sounds like there could have been a breach. I find that sometimes our WI Committee don’t take this type of thing seriously as they’re not working and don’t appreciate the implications. I would suggest that Fed would gently remind them of their obligations.

It is a GDPR breach to tell everyone her new address. Only the branch officers need to know, presumably, for branch admin.

Fuss about nothing!

Information from the Information Commissioner on data concerns

DrManhattan · 20/07/2020 07:25

Are you in witness protection?

So what do you expect the outcome to be if you make a complaint? No ones got a time machine. That info is still out there, although I doubt fancy bear are hacking WI meetings.

labyrinthloafer · 20/07/2020 07:30

I am Shock at all the people who think this is a fuss about nothing, at my voluntary activity we have had GDPR drummed into us.

I think some people must be naive or in denial about the real-world implications of data sloppiness. For example, if the OP or her DH were a magistrate - their address being known by many could be a real issue. Local councillors no longer have to publish addresses due to death threats. These impacts are real.

dontdisturbmenow · 20/07/2020 07:31

My address was identifiable not from the Zoom mention but was from the elaborated information given on WhatsApp which was readable by the same members
What elaborate information? You might put 2 and 2 together from it, it doesn't mean others could or would.

LakieLady · 20/07/2020 07:33

I doubt very much if unsecured Zoom meetings of WI local group are being listened into by anyone other than members, let alone major crime syndicates or the security services

The WI is well known for being a hotbed of subversives and dissidents!

labyrinthloafer · 20/07/2020 07:44

There are a lot of lazy data practices around, all this 'it doesn't matter' stuff on this thread partly demonstrates why too many voluntary things are really badly run. The central organisation can have all the policies it wants but you're scuppered by a lot of people in branches who don't see why they should bother.

ellieelephant1 · 20/07/2020 07:46

So many things I want to say to this, no idea where to start...
I suppose you are not being unreasonable but my god an over reaction...unless you are in the secret service or on the run?

OryxNotCrake · 20/07/2020 07:48

Oh, don’t be so ridiculous.

Has anyone watched the latest Alan Bennet Talking Heads series on iPlayer?

I genuinely thought someone was pretending to be the lady in episode 1 (played by Imelda Staunton) Grin

YeahWhatevver · 20/07/2020 07:59

I've always (unjustifiably) thought of the WI as a group of stuffy Hyacinth Bucket types.

You're doing nothing to dispell my prejudice OP

Its worth mentioning that email is not secure or end to end encrypted, so sending your details over email was probably worse than the other things...

Fruitbowlflowers · 20/07/2020 08:24

Could have been something like, it being whatsapped to the person updating the database?
I honestly think this is an overreaction, these women will be volunteers giving their time to run the group. If you have such knowledge and feel they are not grasping gdpr as well as could be then volunteer to help. It bothers me so much when people are parts of groups ran by volunteers and they make life hell for the volunteers running them but would never think to give up their own time to help or support.

Amibannedorwhat · 20/07/2020 08:25

@Jamestown

With the Russians apparently spying on us and the fear that the Chinese may do so, I would be very worried that the WI zoom calls may be listened into by one or both of them, so who knows what superpower now knows your address?
This did make me laugh sorry 😂 (Ican kind of see your point though)
Mintychoc1 · 20/07/2020 08:38

OP unless there is a massive backstory we don’t know about, then you are making a big fuss over nothing.

eatsleepread · 20/07/2020 08:43

So your actual full address was revealed, was it? Not just that fact that you are moving, or the area?
