Grandma help

Mitzimccormack · 19/07/2020 11:42

My mother in law who is 90 was always a fabulous seamstress and when my boys were born she made them beautiful commemorative quilts. Now her other son is having his first grandson ( from he stepson who he loves) and grandma is really upset because she can’t make this baby a quilt - her hands are arthritic now. So we need help please. What would be a fabulous Thoughtful present for her to buy. My boys chucked out all the sentimental toot as soon as I gave it to them, but they have kept their quilts.

Is she a knitter or a crocheter? My DM has found as her arthritis has got worse she has moved to smaller knitted projects and then crochet as it is much easier on the hands.

She wasn't into crochet before but needs must for the dedicated crafter.

Would she consider paying someone else to make the quilt? I know it’s not quite as personal...

Boringnamechanging · 19/07/2020 12:08

Could she buy a quilt or find a local sewing circle and commission one?

SunbathingDragon · 19/07/2020 12:09

I agree about her getting someone else to do it so that the same theme is continued. That would be lovely and very fitting.

I'd also suggest asking any local quilting groups of she could design one and commission someone to make it on her behalf.

Is there anyone else in the family who could make something? As in, could grandma teach/oversee somebody else? Maybe even one of your DC?
Doesn’t have to be fancy, I’m sure she could come up with something simple and doable yet lovely.

Might this help?

Could you take a photo of one of the quilts and ask in your local FB group for a recommendation?

That way it'll always have your Grandma's design, just not her actual needlework.

There's lots of local craft groups who I'm sure would love to help out, my friend is sick of making masks! Search the keyword craft and your area and see what comes up. Traditional churches might know someone too, there's always lots of fixing in my experience. Craft groups may charge but it will be reasonable and a lot more personal, they may be able to involve grandma in some way
