Not really an AIBU but wondering what you would choose

Disclaimer: I am not in the UK but I'm the US. School starts here on August 17 and these were the options of what we wanted to do as far as returning to school

Option A....Return to school for a limited amount of tjme. Elementary and middle school.children will be divided by their last names and will attend 2 days a week. Either Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday. Every thing else will be remote learning.
Our high schools will be divided up into 4 groups. They will attend one week a month on Monday,Tuesday,Thursday,Friday with remote learning the other weeks

Option B...Total Virtual Academy. Everything is online.

So given the choice which would you choose? I chose Virtual for my middle schooler and high schooler and decided not to enroll my kindergarten age child until next year

I'd do the days offered.

Still1nLove · 18/07/2020 20:19

What are Covid case numbers where you are?

Leaannb · 18/07/2020 21:18

@Still1nLove...Higher now than ever

Depends on what state you’re in.

HoldMyLobster · 18/07/2020 21:28

Given which state you’re living in I think you made the right decision.

I’m in Maine and if they offer the green (everyone back to school) or yellow (half at a time back to school) plan I’ll take it but that’s because I trust our governor, schools and CDC to make safe decisions.

@HoldMyLobster.....North Carolina where it has been recommended that we roll back in reopening

In that case I'd choose virtual.

@betteliefsen....I did without reservations. My 3 really enjoyed Virtual learning last year. It worked so well for my 12 yo that will be a permanent decision.

It’s hard because some kids really have hated virtual learning and missed their friends. I know mine will be gutted if they’re only offered online school.

But I really think the hotspot states need to keep schools closed and roll back their reopening and get things under control, then try reopening again much more cautiously.

Leaannb · 18/07/2020 22:37

@HoldMyLobster....I truly hope your children can go full time and not do Virtual. My middle schooler absolutely adored it and we were actually in the process of enrolling him in our State's Virtual.Charter School. It won't bother my Senior too much because he would only be going to school.for 2 hours a day and gets his socialization from his job. It won't bother my 5yo because she has never been to school a day in her life

For my kids: as much school as possible.
But that's because the virtual stuff we have been offered has been pants, with minimal contact (my youngest has had 3 phone calls, 3 emails and 0 work marked, my oldest has had 6 weeks back at school, but before that 1 email, 2 phone calls and zero work marked).
A decent virtual option may be a different kettle of fish.

We're in a different state and go back after Labor Day. I'd like my son to go back for the two days, because he's an only so doesn't have a lot of kids for company. I'm trying to balance the Covid risks against his mental health - I think he's struggling and quite lonely. The online school provided from March till end of term was only 2 x 30 min class zoom calls a week, plus worksheet assignments, and required a lot of supervision from me.

If he had other siblings at home and a better circle of friends locally I would go for virtual school. It's so hard to trust that it will be safe for them to go back, given the incompetent leadership and objections to wearing masks here.

VimFuego101 · 18/07/2020 23:18

*meant to say - we also have a 2 day in school or full time virtual option, same as you.

It's off topic but I've always wondered what ages attend elementary school and middle school? Then do they go straight to high school? And is that freshman, softmore etc or is that college? I have a 7 year old with asd and his dream is to go to a specific school in America and he's been obsessed for years!

Elementary school is usually K-5, middle school is 6th thru 8th and High School is 9th thru 12th. Sometimes due to district needs 6th grade will be at elementary. Our college is not the same as yours.

I would take A every time if given the choice. My state is doing fairly well in comparison to many and the plans at DS's private school are to open fully with distancing and masks and cohort restrictions, all of which I agree with. DD's public (state) school will be opening a few days late to ensure they have all their options in place first. I don't know how I'd feel about A if I was in Florida or Arizona but overall the risks to DC are very very low.

We are in North Carolina if that helps

OP, the cases for NC are following a very different trajectory from ours (CO) and appear to be climbing pretty steadily. I still can't say what I'd do in your position, but I'd still seriously consider A because it sounds like a sensible amount of distancing, and every single piece of science on the subject that I have seen says children are better off in school rather than online.
