To give DC Iron + Vit. C on an empty stomach?

Hello,

Sorry, posting here for traffic.

Is it OK to give DC (7 and 3) liquid iron and chewable vitamin C (to help absorption) first thing in the morning (30 min. before breakfast?). Although they are both age-appropriate, I'm a little concerned that the Vit. C on an empty stomach would be too harsh on their tummies. A health professional's input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not a health professional but if its because they have breakfast at nursery/school etc you could give them the vitamin with their dinner?

You can give orange juice to help absorption of iron also.

TeenPlusTwenties · 18/07/2020 14:46

Not a health professional.
But we were advised to give my teen her iron and vitamin C first thing and then wait an hour.

Surely whichever medical person who told you your DCs needed supplements also advised on how best to do it?

TeenPlusTwenties · 18/07/2020 14:47

(DD's Vit C comes in form of orange juice)

Floatyboat · 18/07/2020 14:49

Why do they need it?

Winterwoollies · 18/07/2020 15:16

Put a liquid iron (like Spatone) into orange juice. It is enough vitamin C and it disguised the appalling taste of the liquid iron. Then you can just give it to them at breakfast.

I've had non chewable vitamin c tablets on an empty stomach before and they made me throw up

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 15:39

What iron supplement is it? And why are you giving them supplements, has your GP advised you to?

For me, spatone tastes disgusting no matter whether I mixed it in with juice or not. It has made me throw up on an empty stomach before, I doubt I’d have been able to drink it when I was younger!

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 15:41

I think the iron would be more harsh than the vitamin c btw. A glass of fresh orange juice contains plenty of vit c

RowboatsinDisguise · 18/07/2020 15:48

We recommend our pregnant patients with low iron Take their ferrous sulphate with orange juice on an empty stomach to maximise absorption. It’s hard to tolerate though (because of the iron, not the vit C).

Lovelydovey · 18/07/2020 15:50

I wouldn’t. I can’t take them on an empty stomach without feeling nauseous. I know that absorption is less, but I just can’t do it.

RedRumTheHorse · 18/07/2020 16:02

Talk to the health professional who advised you to give the iron to the children as there are various ways you can take it to decrease nausea. For example I often take it before bed.
