What do people think will make Britain great again?

Logiclady94 · 18/07/2020 09:56

I keep coming back to this thought and I wondered what other people thought so I decided to ask the wonderful people on mumsnet for their opinions. I was reading that more jobs were lost, people are being told to return to work to save the economy, coronavirus means that people still don’t feel comfortable doing that, work/life balance needs sorting, income and taxes need rectifying. Not an opinion but you see a lot of the richer need punishing, house prices are ridiculous..

So my wondering is what are people’s thoughts genuine thoughts about what they would change with this country?

Well if people took financial responsibility for themselves instead of having kids they have no chance of supporting/going on holiday instead of getting health insurance/not saving enough for their retirement etc. then that would be a good start.

KaptainKaveman · 18/07/2020 12:00

For many children, school is the only place they will ever get to do any music. If parents can't afford to buy instruments or pay for lessons where else are they going to do it?

Clearly your school experience was unhappy and your range of interests is very narrow. Don't wish the same upon other children. You should be grateful that children are offered a broad range of subjects, not resentful.

Camomila · 18/07/2020 12:03

I think one positive that may happen is that the 'brain drain' to London will decrease and young people will want to stay/return to their home towns and do innovative things there.

People (that can afford it, have space etc) will become less wasteful/more appreciative of fresh healthy food? My parents have been really working on their fruit/veg patch over lockdown and said it was hours and hours of work to grow one salad/carrot/radish etc. Tasted amazing though, nothing like supermarket ones.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/07/2020 12:04

‘Proper degree’. 🤮

This is exactly what makes the UK shit. Red brick universities selecting middle class kids from middle class backgrounds.

My degree was in design. One of Britain’s biggest exports. It’s kept me employed for 36 years,

Is this ‘proper’ enough?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 18/07/2020 12:05

'Start with sacking Mr Johnson, most of the Tories in the party would do a better job. '

So you don't want to live in a democracy, you do understand they were voted in don't you? Maybe china would suit you better.

Logiclady94 · 18/07/2020 12:09

@KaptainKaveman- my school life wasn’t unhappy. I was just pushed into subjects which I had little interest in which as a person made me feel not good enough. I was graded on lessons that I knew I was never going to excel at because I knew I wasn’t good at it and I knew I wasn’t interested in. I feel like Year 7 should be a mixer year than in Year 8 you should be able to choose subjects that you actually want to learn about.

I feel like if kids that are underprivileged but they have an interest or skill in music than that is what they can choose from year 8 going forward.

How do children from homes without music know they're interested in / good at music if they don't get it at school? Confused

I also hate the taxation = punishment argument. Try seeing it as a privilege to pay tax and keep the country running.

flirtygirl · 18/07/2020 12:13

I think your name is a misnomer op.

Logic lady indeed....

KaptainKaveman · 18/07/2020 12:14

What do you think would make Britain 'great' again OP? politically?

lovelyupnorth · 18/07/2020 12:16

@Spinnyspiney

'And yes I’m Irish - Erie is usually used by thick shit Brit’s who don’t really understand shit.

Are you sure you're Irish @lovelyupnorth because you know you've not spelled that correctly??? I know older Irish people who use Eire, so there.

Bloody Apple.

One that’s different. I know Irish people who only speak Gaelic. Brits using it are usually thick or racists.

Raimona · 18/07/2020 12:17

But that is a very high salary. And he “can’t afford” to take a couple of weeks off?
We have financial commitments based on an expected income of £1k per week. Losing two weeks salary would have made it difficult to pay our bills. Especially considering I’d lost my job because my employer didn’t want the hassle of a pregnant employee.

Logiclady94 · 18/07/2020 12:17

Because you do these things in Primary and as my suggestion states Year 7 you do all the classes you are forced to do for the next 3 years then in year 8 you can choose which subjects you liked from Year 7 because you have a genuine interest in them.

Is no one concerned that children skive lessons and don’t attend the ones they deem to be pointless because they know they aren’t good at them. I had to do Art every year once a week for 3 years until Year 10 I could have easily spent those class hours spending more time doing the things that I was actually good at.

Anyway to answer your question OP, electoral reform and tightening up the laws on media ownership, first step. Closing tax loopholes like non-dom status and locking the revolving door between parliament and lucrative lobbying work. Devolve power to the regions. Invest in green energy, rail freight and the canal network. More apprenticeships and vastly increased lifelong learning provision. Stop land banking. Take over empty housing stock. Halve class sizes in state schools, at least in the first two years.

That'll do for starters Wink

LonginesPrime · 18/07/2020 12:21

Shakespeare isn’t ridiculous, watching the film for an hours is

What does this even mean? Shakespeare isn't ridiculous in itself, but schoolchildren shouldn't be exposed to it?

SecretSpAD · 18/07/2020 12:21

What would people like to Change about the way Britain is ran and how would people like to see an improvement on people’s way of life.

Never have another Tory government.
Stop electing politicians who are straight out of public school and university with little proper work experience except what their rich parents can arrange for them.
Listen to the teachers, NHS staff etc and stop expensive and needless restructures.
Leave our universities alone to grow and innovate
Promote a culture of respect for our public services.
Properly invest in early years education so all children get a good start in life
Stop punishing the poor and the sick for daring to be poor and/or sick
Introduce a basic minimum income so people don't have to choose between feeding the kids or getting to work
Elect a government that can in the entire country without having to bribe bits of it to keep votes (ok that's too naive)

Or if they do just one thing.....read Michael Marmot's latest report.
Accept that austerity doesn't work and don't do it ever again.

SheWranglesRugRats · 18/07/2020 12:23

high five @secretSPAD

onedayinthefuture · 18/07/2020 12:26

A pill for pessimism, would make things much better.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/07/2020 12:28

No one skives lessons anymore.

We take the register every lesson. If a kid isn’t in the room we have to alert management. It is a safeguarding issue.

Also, parents can view their child’s attendance via apps linked to school register. So there is no skiving anymore.

LonginesPrime · 18/07/2020 12:30

Discouraging feckless people from procreating.

How would that work then?

Would you scrap the welfare state or are you relying on feckless people to self-identify?

daisypond · 18/07/2020 12:33

Is no one concerned that children skive lessons and don’t attend the ones they deem to be pointless because they know they aren’t good at them.
Are you really suggesting that a year7/8 child should be allowed to drop English, maths, anything, because a child thinks they are pointless? The point of education is to be educated, to learn a variety of things to make you a rounded person with at least a basic education. It doesn’t matter if you are good at them or not. It’s the learning that matters, and how to learn, to expand your brain and skills in different ways. If we allow children to choose at such a young age, we really are done for.

labyrinthloafer · 18/07/2020 12:34

Half the trouble is many of the things people moan about aren't even happening!

Logiclady94 · 18/07/2020 12:36

@SecretSpAD- Thajnk you! That’s exactly the type of information I was looking for from my post.
