To look for appartments for rent abroad in case of a second wave of Covid?

This might be too early but I'm seriously considering it. I have two DCs and I've had absolutely ENOUGH of being locked down under this terrible weather. I didn't recover fully from PND and this constant grey sky and daily doses of rain are not helping at all. My youngest child also adores going out and throws all sorts of fits when I say that we can't go out due to the terrible weather. We live in the north and it's nearly always grim and windy where I live. Yes I know that some of you don't care and will probably just get themselves dressed and go out anyway but I can't do that, I'm just not that person who's prepared to go out and still enjoy my time in shitty weather.

Like most of you we didn't go on holiday this year for the obvious reasons. But just the thought of spending all the coming winter (did we really have any different season since last year???!!) locked down with two DCs because of a second wave of this flipping virus is making me want to rip my clothes! I told my DH that we should probably start looking to rent an accomodation abroad, somewhere nice and warm, for at least two months. AIBU? Do you think I'm mad or stupid to do something like this?

Forgot to say that I'm SAHM at the moment and DH will be asked to close his business again anyway if we were to be hit by a second wave.

This terrible weather? Where do you live? It's been one of the warmest Spring and summer periods for decades

SpicyEnchiladas · 17/07/2020 16:15

Frigging Lancashire!

If there’s a second wave in the U.K. there likely will across Europe too (presuming that’s where you’d be planning on going) and risking being stuck inside a tiny holiday apartment with minimal facilities and unsure if/when you can travel home sounds a lot more grim than the weather in Lancashire!

hammeringinmyhead · 17/07/2020 16:19

My mum and dad live on the Pennines, Lancashire side of West Yorkshire, and they were sitting in their garden every day from March to June. They look like they've been to Spain for 3 weeks. Hmm

Anyway... YABU I think, as if the rules change wherever you go you may end up unable to leave your apartment and unable to fly home.

Ginfilledcats · 17/07/2020 16:21

I'm in Lancashire and in May and June it was roasting and glorious sunshine here. I remember distinctly as I was heavily pregnant in May and June and had to sleep downstairs several days as it was too hot in my room. You're being a bit melodramatic. I live near Preston and it's drizzled a bit today but it's warm. Just go out between the rain. We have plenty of sunny days.

What are you going to do about school for the kids, and if lock down comes who's to say you can even get out the country or indeed into another.

AlternativePerspective · 17/07/2020 16:25

What terrible weather? Hmm besides which do you think it’s only going to be the UK that will have a second wave?

TheLegendOfZelda · 17/07/2020 16:29

Get somewhere you can lock down happily in eg a nice villa with a garden
Why not?
I've considered it
I can wfh. Kids would be studying from home. No big deal where 'home' is then, is it?
Bit of winter sun might be nice
Look at how each country dealt with the first wave of lockdown to see where you fancy going
With brexit as well though, also think 'visa'?

Wheresthebiffer2 · 17/07/2020 16:32

Spain had a really strict lockdown for children - they weren't allowed outside at all for MONTHS.

VictoriaBun · 17/07/2020 16:33

Terrible weather today in Cumbria, fine rain , no sun , grey skies etc. Not all of us are having a sunny day.
Op if you were to do that what would happen if one of you were to become ill ( for any reason )
Also potential lack of supplies in local shops do you think they would happily sell to you or keep for locals. Lockdowns in that area, curfews , no non essential travel , perhaps for months ?
I'd rather stay where I am.

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2020 16:34

I don’t see why not, would your Dh go too?

Pollyputthepizzaon · 17/07/2020 16:35

Go to the Channel Islands. They are out of lockdown and no cases. You have to isolate for 14 days but then you’re free to live your life!

LuckyLinky · 17/07/2020 16:37

If you have the funds go for it. Plenty of people fled to second homes in Greece as it all started looking dire and self isolated for 2 weeks.

Starbuggy · 17/07/2020 16:37

You’re ignoring the fact that May was the sunniest and driest in record right? And that for the majority of lockdown the weather has been generally nice.

Also ignoring the fact that we are unlikely to be riding a second wave on our own, and countries like Spain and Italy might have better weather but also had much stricter lockdowns than us. Do you want to be cooped up in your rented apartment not allowed to take the children outside?

Not to mention, if you’re SAHM and DH has to close his business, where will the money come from to pay for you to escape abroad for months on end?

Cadent · 17/07/2020 16:37

Sounds like your diamond shoes are too tight OP!

No way would I have the chance of not working for 2 months.

SpicyEnchiladas · 17/07/2020 16:40

Thank you for your replies. Yes we’ve had a glorious sunny weather, but that’s when we were allowed to go out once a day. Also as all play areas are still closed, no children centres, no safe indoor entertainment facilities in my little town, I’m seriously considering going really far away. Think Malaysia, Thailand ...etc I’m just put off by the language barrier and potentially one of us getting ill or being stuck over there.

Toilenstripes · 17/07/2020 16:40

Definitely look into it OP. July has shaped up to be miserable in Oxfordshire. Sunny and warm today, but that’s the exception. Does it have to be Europe? There’s always the Caribbean.

SpicyEnchiladas · 17/07/2020 16:42

We have savings which we can gladly put into this. We’re not rich, but money isn’t the issue for us in this instance.

TheAirbender · 17/07/2020 16:42

Are you in Bolton by chance? MIL is and she has been calling us in tears about weeks of wet weather. There's parts of Lancashire with it's own little ecosystem. You have my sympathy. That said, I'm overseas and I caution you - many people got 'stuck' when travel restrictions came into force and are STILL trying to get home now (due to far fewer flights and other issues). There's a mum at my kids school who hasn't seen her kids for four months as she went home to India to nurse her sick Dad and couldn't come back. If there's a second wave in England there's likely to be one in other places - just be sure you go somewhere where you'd be happy to be forced to stay if flights are stopped.

SpicyEnchiladas · 17/07/2020 16:43

@Toilenstripes oh yes the Caribbean! Any idea about the virus over there?

OP posts:
SpicyEnchiladas · 17/07/2020 16:46

@TheAirbender Very close to Bolton! And yes we’ve had weeks of awful sad grey skies!
That’s one thing that is worrying us. Being stuck for a long time before the air travel is restored.

Thingsdogetbetter · 17/07/2020 16:49

What's the plan if the country you escape to has a second wave and locks down again? Thailand's lockdown was severe, no shops open, no bars, hotels not serving food or cleaning rooms etc etc. And no flights back to UK for months. And when flights started again they were ££££. Had a friend trapped there for months and said it was hell stuck in his hotel room with nothing to do and nowhere to go. Personally i think it would be locked down at home with the kids stuff there to keep them entertained, than in a hotel room with 2 bored kids regardless of the weather.

Llamazoom · 17/07/2020 16:50

I am stupidly impulsive but if I could I would go for it, if I had the funds I would clear off and not come back until next spring. I would rent a house with outside space rather than an apartment though.
Go for it!

MalificentJones · 17/07/2020 16:52

I do think you are slightly on the mad side if you’ve never lived anywhere without an NHS. It can be quite an eye opener.

You need to start with visas if you want to go somewhere for the entire winter.

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2020 16:53

Just don’t get it on the plane and take it with you. When I think about a long haul flight all squashed in it puts me off a bit.
