To have not helped fallen woman?

SquishyBones · 17/07/2020 12:38

Went for walk down river bank. Two women walking ahead of us with two big dogs (looked like a Rottweiler and a Doberman). Neither of the dogs on a lead. One of the women fell over. The other woman was in stitches. The woman on the floor was struggling to get back up, all her stuff had fallen out of her bag and she was frantically searching for stuff on the floor. The other woman was not helping her, just laughing. One of the dogs (Rottweiler) was just stood there waiting. The other dog (Doberman) dived on the woman sending her rolling down the hill. Other woman was now howling with tears. The woman looked like she needed help but ...

A) two big dogs
B) two dogs known for being protective of humans
C) the other woman was acting like it was all a bit of a laugh.

Against my better judgement I walked on past. Turned around later to find both women on their feet but the “fallen” woman limping.

Totally confused by the whole thing. Feel bad for not helping but the scene was surreal. Would you have helped?

They were friends. You did the right thing.

Don't approach strange dogs especially breeds known to be aggressive.

To be fair if the dogs had been chihuahuas or Labradors I wouldn’t have gone anywhere near them!

No I don't think I would have done. Her "friend" was with her and hopefully the situation wasn't too bad if one was laughing.

I'm a dog lover - I'd have been wary of touching a fallen person while their dogs were loose at the best of times, but yes especially with guarding breeds.

MindatWork · 17/07/2020 13:28

Slightly disappointed this thread’s not about helping a Victorian fallen woman whose had her reputation ruined by a caddish soldier Grin.

But no OP, she had her friend with her (as horrible as she sounded) so don’t think you should have felt obliged to step in.

Straycatstrut · 17/07/2020 13:31

I'd have walked a bit more slowly and kept an eye on her but I'd have been seething at her friend. Honestly a quick burst of surprised laughter fine, but then you make sure they're not hurt...

emmathedilemma · 17/07/2020 13:33

If she'd on her own I'd have asked but with a friend, no.

fascinated · 17/07/2020 13:34

Doberman and Rottweiler protective of humans?

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 17/07/2020 13:36

I too was expecting "fallen woman" to be some kind of Jezabel whore of babylon who showed her ankle to the chimney sweep!

Anyway, no, if she had someone with her, there would be no need to rush in and help. Also, those breeds scare me (due to past bad experiences) so no, I would not have done anything. She wasnt on her own.

@fascinated

Doberman and Rottweiler protective of humans?
Yes ... one of them was specially bred to be a human bodyguard ...

@fascinated

Doberman and Rottweiler protective of humans?
Yes, they are not exactly like cockapoos... Hmm
1forAll74 · 17/07/2020 13:41

I would have left them to it, as they probably knew each other well, and had a kind of connected sense of humour, but the scenario would probably have made me laugh too, I would also not like to interfere where large dogs with their owners are concerned.

Ragwort · 17/07/2020 13:43

Personally I am terrified by big dogs so I probably wouldn't have stopped. A couple of weeks ago I was out walking and a woman, with a small dog on a lead, tripped over. I immediately went to help her and held the dog lead and helped her up at the same time, but she was on her own. This woman's friend sounds horrible to just laugh Hmm.

Beautiful3 · 17/07/2020 13:43

She had her friend to help her. If she were alone, I would have offered help.

NeutrinoWrangler · 17/07/2020 13:44

I wouldn't have helped, under those circumstances. There was someone with her, and they weren't asking for help.

(And I'm another who was expecting something about prostitution, based on the thread title!)

Beautiful3 · 17/07/2020 13:45

@fascinated

"Doberman and Rottweiler protective of humans?"

Yes of course they are!

Playmysong · 17/07/2020 13:46

When I clicked on this thread I was ready to flame you. I thought that you were going to say that a woman had fallen and you had just left her on the ground, because of Covid!

However YADNBU to walk past in the situation you described. What horrible behaviour from the so called ‘friend’!

fascinated · 17/07/2020 13:48

So are you meaning the dog would help the owner?

fascinated · 17/07/2020 13:49

I thought I’d heard of such dogs biting children?

Llamazoom · 17/07/2020 13:49

My Rott is protective of the whole family, she paces the beach when the kids are in the sea, won’t take her eyes off them. She is wary of strangers and is my shadow, very loyal and protective breed.

I think you did the right thing op, if she had been alone I would have shouted over but not approached.
Doby’s were specifically bred to be guard dogs in the late 1800’s.

thistimelastweek · 17/07/2020 13:49

Reminds me of the old joke.
'Do you save fallen women? Well, save one for me.'

Llamazoom · 17/07/2020 13:51

@fascinated all dogs bite. Labrador’s are one of the biggest biters but are known as a ‘family dog’
I’m on my 3rd Rott and none of them have ever bitten, their ‘Rottie rumble’ is usually all the deterrent that’s needed.

Goslowlysideways · 17/07/2020 13:52

Definitely thought you were talking about a Victorian type of fallen woman!

Viviennemary · 17/07/2020 13:54

No. I am terrified of dogs especially large dangerous ones. You could have made things even worse by interfering. They don't sound seriously hurt. It's a risk you take when you have a dog.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 17/07/2020 13:54

Doberman and Rottweiler protective of humans

Well considering they are bred and used as guard dogs I'd say yes.....

DanielRicciardosSmile · 17/07/2020 13:54

I was so hoping this would be posted by Sybil Birling, regretting that she didn't do something to help Eva/Daisy. Or maybe helping DS with his English Literature for the last however many weeks it's been has affected my brain.
